A filename or the order files finish uploading is not a reliable way to set playlist playback order. If you also want your computer folder to sort in sequence, add equal-width, zero-padded numbers to filenames before upload—for example, 001 - Intro.mp4, 002 - Lesson.mp4, and 003 - Wrap-up.mp4.
First decide which order you mean
“Playlist order” can refer to three different things: the names and sequence in your computer folder, the way uploaded videos appear in a platform’s library, or the playback sequence viewers encounter in a playlist. Each has a different control.

Prepare filenames for a dependable local sequence
- Choose the intended sequence. Decide the order first, then assign each file a number.
- Use the same number width. Use leading zeroes, such as
001,002, and010. Ordinary alphabetical sorting will then follow the intended numeric sequence rather than placing “10” next to “1.” - Keep a recognizable title after the prefix. For example,
010 - Chapter 10.mp4is easier to identify than a number alone. - Sort the folder by name before selecting the batch. This makes the intended order visible locally, but it is a file-management safeguard—not a guarantee that the host will use that sequence for playback.
Set the actual playlist order on YouTube
YouTube’s upload workflow lets you add a video to an existing playlist or create one. That associates the video with a playlist; YouTube’s separate playlist-editing instructions describe the manual control for changing its position. YouTube Help does not establish that filenames, batch-selection order, or upload completion order automatically become playlist order.
- Add the videos to the intended playlist. During upload, use YouTube’s playlist option to choose an existing playlist or create one. See YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos.
- Open the playlist to edit it. You can manage playlists in YouTube or YouTube Studio. YouTube’s instructions cover reordering in both the playlist editor and Studio: Edit playlists on a computer and Manage playlists in YouTube Studio.
- Drag each video or Short into position. YouTube Help says to drag the item up or down to reorder the playlist. Work through the list until the sequence matches your intended running order.
- Check the result in the playlist. Verify the visible order after editing. If a video appears in the wrong place, move it in the playlist editor rather than relying on a filename change.
Handle bulk uploads and sorting on Vimeo
Rename videos during a mobile bulk upload
Vimeo’s documented mobile bulk-upload flow allows you to select several videos, rename them in the confirmation flow, choose a destination folder, and start uploading. Use this when you need consistent titles or numbered labels as part of the upload process. The documented renaming control is not evidence that filename prefixes set playlist playback position. Use the library sort for library organization
Vimeo’s library offers sorting such as title A–Z or Z–A and date-based options, along with bulk actions for selected videos. These controls organize the library view or help manage assets; they should not be treated as a playlist’s playback-order control. See the Vimeo library overview.
Keep profile-page order separate from library order
Vimeo describes profile-page ordering separately: manually positioned clips can take precedence over the remaining videos, which in the described default case are ordered by upload date, newest first. Profile-page behavior is not a general rule for every Vimeo library or playlist. See Vimeo’s profile-page ordering explanation and its Profile page FAQ.

Fix an order that is already wrong
- Wrong sequence in a YouTube playlist: open that playlist and drag the videos or Shorts into the intended positions. Renaming files is not a substitute for this step.
- Wrong names or library organization on Vimeo: use the available rename, sort, or bulk-management controls for the library. Then separately check the playback sequence wherever the playlist is managed.
- Correct local files, wrong playback order: keep the numbered filenames if they help identify the sequence, but change the order inside the platform’s playlist editor.
