How to Keep FFmpeg Streaming to YouTube After a Temporary Network Outage

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags do not guarantee YouTube output recovery. Learn the output-side options, RTMPS checks, YouTube health signals, and limits of failover.

FFmpeg cannot send live video while your internet connection has no route to YouTube. To recover when connectivity returns, configure output-side recovery with FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer or run FFmpeg under a supervisor that restarts a failed process, then verify YouTube is receiving video. Neither method guarantees a gap-free stream.

What happens when the network drops

A network outage interrupts FFmpeg’s connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. HTTP reconnect options do not solve that output failure: FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect and reconnect_on_network_error for HTTP protocol behavior, not as a general RTMP or RTMPS output-reconnection mechanism. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

The practical goal is to resume sending promptly after the route returns. Video packets cannot be delivered while the connection is unavailable, so viewers may see a gap, and the broadcast may be affected. FFmpeg or YouTube documentation does not guarantee seamless continuity for a dropped FFmpeg output connection.

Choose an output recovery method

Option 1: FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer

FFmpeg’s formats manual documents the FIFO pseudo-muxer for network outputs and includes controls for attempting recovery, limiting attempts, and setting the wait between attempts. The relevant options include attempt_recovery, max_recovery_attempts, and recovery_wait_time. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for the syntax and behavior supported by your installed release.

FIFO recovery is an output-side approach; it is distinct from adding HTTP reconnect flags to an input. Exact availability and behavior can vary by FFmpeg version and build. Check your local ffmpeg-formats manual and confirm how the FIFO output should wrap your existing YouTube output before relying on a command copied from another release. A recovery attempt does not restore packets lost during the outage.

Option 2: Supervise and restart FFmpeg

An external process supervisor can restart FFmpeg if it exits after an output failure. The restart must use the intended input, YouTube ingest URL, stream key, and command configuration. A supervisor can recover from a process exit; it cannot create internet connectivity when the ISP path is down. Once connectivity returns, the process may need to be restarted or recover through its own output logic, depending on how it failed.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Keep the stream key private wherever you store a command or supervisor configuration. Do not assume a process that is still running is successfully delivering video.

Set up and check the YouTube connection

  1. Record your FFmpeg version. Check the installed build and read its local formats and protocols documentation before adopting options. FFmpeg’s recovery controls and their behavior are version-sensitive.
  2. Use YouTube’s ingest details. Configure the ingestion URL and stream key supplied for your broadcast. Protect the key from logs, shared scripts, and public repositories.
  3. Validate RTMPS settings if you use RTMPS. Check that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol, the valid ingestion endpoint and path, and port 443; TLS must use the correct hostname/SNI. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide recommends RTMPS for ordinary user content, including low-latency cases.
  4. Enable one recovery route. Configure FIFO recovery for the network output using the syntax supported by your build, or supervise FFmpeg so it can be restarted with the same intended configuration. Do not treat input-side HTTP reconnect flags as a substitute for output recovery.
  5. Watch both sides after an interruption. Read FFmpeg’s error log, then check YouTube Live’s stream status and health to confirm video is arriving again. YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation describes status and health fields, including videoIngestionStarved when incoming video is insufficient: LiveStreams API resource.
  6. Rehearse a controlled interruption. Test your actual command and recovery setup before an important broadcast, and observe the stream’s status and health when the connection returns.

What YouTube’s backup ingest address does—and does not do

YouTube’s LiveStreams API documents primary and backup ingest addresses. The backup address supports optional simultaneous sending; the cited API documentation does not describe it as automatic failover for one FFmpeg connection. Treat it as a parallel-send option, not a replacement for configuring sender-side recovery.

Can a backup internet connection help?

A cellular failover router may preserve internet reachability if the primary ISP path fails and cellular service is available. That is a network-design possibility, not a guarantee from FFmpeg or YouTube. A route change can still interrupt the active connection, so output recovery remains relevant. Coverage, data capacity, carrier terms, and how route failover is configured all affect whether a 4G LTE failover router is useful.

RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH are not reconnect switches

YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS for normal through ultra-low latency; RTMPS encrypts the contribution path. HLS and DASH are segment-based, support additional codecs, and may suit higher-resolution contributions, but have greater latency. Switching protocols is not a general fix for dropped output connections. Google also states that RTMP and DASH ingestions cannot be mixed within one broadcast. See the YouTube Live ingestion protocol comparison.

Troubleshooting after a drop

FFmpeg logs network errors but does not reconnect

Check whether the reconnect options you added belong to an HTTP input rather than the network output. For output recovery, consult your installed FFmpeg formats manual for FIFO recovery controls or use a supervisor that can restart a failed process.

FFmpeg is running, but YouTube shows no incoming video

An open process is not proof of a healthy ingest. Review the FFmpeg log and YouTube Live’s stream status and health. Look for insufficient incoming video, including the videoIngestionStarved health status, and verify that the connection has resumed.

RTMPS fails to connect

Verify the RTMPS scheme, ingest endpoint, path, port 443, and TLS hostname/SNI against Google’s RTMPS guide. An incorrect endpoint or TLS setup can prevent connection even after the internet route returns.

Recovery resumes but the broadcast has a gap

A gap is consistent with packets not being deliverable during the outage. Recovery controls can attempt to resume output; they cannot transmit live packets without a working route or restore packets already missed.

The primary ISP fails despite a recovery configuration

Application-level recovery does not provide an uplink. An independent cellular path may help if it is available and configured to take over, but a route change can break the active session and does not guarantee zero interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should loop continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an FFmpeg machine and home connection running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
