Run FFmpeg inside a tmux session on your Oracle Cloud instance, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The remote process can continue after your local connection ends, and you can reconnect later to inspect it. Add FFmpeg’s -nostdin option to prevent it from checking for console input; it does not, by itself, keep a process running after SSH disconnects.
Keep FFmpeg running with tmux
Start tmux on the Oracle Cloud instance—not just on your own computer—and run FFmpeg inside the remote session. The tmux manual says its sessions survive accidental SSH disconnection and intentional detaching. That protects the terminal session from a lost SSH connection; it does not supervise FFmpeg or protect it from instance or network failures.

Connect to the instance as the user who will run FFmpeg:
ssh OPC_USER@INSTANCE_PUBLIC_IPReplace the example username and IP address with your instance’s SSH details.

Create a named tmux session:
tmux new-session -s ffmpeg-stream -
Inside tmux, run your actual FFmpeg command. For example:
ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT -f FLV OUTPUT_URLReplace
INPUTandOUTPUT_URLwith the source and destination for your stream. The example is illustrative: use the options, credentials, and output format required by your destination. -
Detach without stopping the process: press Ctrl+b, release the keys, then press d. You can now close SSH.

After reconnecting to the same instance as the same user, list sessions and reattach:

Why add -nostdin?
FFmpeg normally enables interaction through standard input unless standard input is itself an input. Its documentation says -nostdin disables that interaction, and its FAQ recommends the option for background operation to prevent input checks. It addresses FFmpeg’s console-input behavior; tmux is what lets you detach from and later reattach to the remote terminal.

On Linux and macOS, redirecting standard input from /dev/null is an alternative noted in FFmpeg’s FAQ. For a tmux workflow, using -nostdin makes the intended non-interactive behavior explicit.
Choose the right persistence method

Use systemd for an unattended service
A systemd unit can be a better fit than tmux when you need the process represented as a service and want to define restart behavior. Oracle’s Oracle Linux documentation describes ExecStart and Restart. Build the unit around the actual FFmpeg binary path, arguments, environment, and credentials for your instance; a generic unit cannot safely account for those details. Choose its restart policy intentionally, and remember that a restarted process may still fail to reconnect to the media destination.

nohup can keep a command from responding to a hangup signal, but it does not preserve a terminal you can later reattach to. If you choose it, redirect output to a log path the running user can write, record or identify the process, and check both its status and the stream’s health after disconnecting.

What an SSH disconnect does not protect against
Closing or losing your local SSH connection is different from an Oracle Cloud instance reboot or termination, an FFmpeg crash, an out-of-memory kill, a failed source, or a broken connection from the instance to the destination. tmux addresses terminal disconnection; it does not automatically restart FFmpeg or recover from host failure. systemd can apply a configured restart policy, but a restart is not proof that the destination accepted the stream or that playback resumed without interruption.

The tmux session is missing: Confirm you reconnected to the same instance and logged in as the same user that started it. Check that you are looking at that user’s tmux server and socket, then run
tmux ls. -
FFmpeg is stopped or appears suspended: Reattach and inspect the pane output. If you used systemd, inspect the service state and logs. Confirm that background FFmpeg was started with

FFmpeg is running but the destination is not receiving a healthy stream: Check the output URL and credentials, then investigate the instance’s network path to the destination. A live tmux session or running process alone does not establish that the destination is receiving valid media.

The stream does not return after a process restart: Check FFmpeg’s new output and the destination’s response. A service manager can restart a process according to its configuration, but cannot guarantee the remote endpoint will accept it.
Do not confuse OCI Streaming with process persistence
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming is a managed service for ingesting and consuming high-volume event data. It is separate from keeping an FFmpeg process running on a Compute instance after SSH logout. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming FAQ
