To keep an OBS stream running through a power cut, back up power for the streaming PC and the internet equipment it depends on, then size that backup by the setup’s measured watt draw and the runtime you need. A UPS can bridge an interruption or support a controlled shutdown; it cannot keep a stream online if the broadband connection or provider-side network fails. For longer cuts, investigate a properly sized inverter or extended-runtime UPS and verify its compatibility and runtime for your equipment.
What needs to stay on for the stream to survive?
There are two separate dependencies: electricity at your setup and a working internet path to YouTube. If either fails, OBS can lose its connection to the live ingest server.
List the devices that must remain powered: the Windows PC, monitor if needed, router, modem or fiber ONT, and any essential audio or capture equipment that needs mains power. The router and ONT matter: a powered PC cannot stream if the network equipment shuts down.
Even when your equipment has backup power, your provider’s local infrastructure and upstream service may not. Test whether your broadband connection remains usable during a cut; customer-side backup cannot guarantee provider-side continuity. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a live stream (YouTube streaming tips).

Choose backup power by measured watts and required runtime
Measure the actual load
Measure the PC and other devices under the workload you expect while streaming, using an appropriate power meter or reliable equipment telemetry. A PC power supply’s maximum rating is not a measurement of its normal draw. Add together the loads of every device you plan to keep powered, including network equipment.
Check watts, not just VA
Compare that total load with the UPS’s output watt rating and manufacturer runtime information for that load. VA and watts are different measures; a VA figure alone does not establish that the UPS can support your equipment. Schneider Electric India recommends choosing output watt capacity 20–25% above the load and checking runtime against connected equipment (Schneider Electric India UPS buying guide).

When comparing a desktop UPS with battery backup, check its watt limit, manufacturer runtime curve or table, battery-backed outlets, outlet type, and whether the devices you need can be connected. For example, Eaton lists its Aurora line-interactive UPS family at 600–1000 VA and 230 Vac, with applications including desktops and routers. Those family specifications do not establish a particular model’s runtime for your PC (Eaton India Aurora UPS).
Match the backup to the outage you want to handle
A desktop UPS may suit brief ride-through or enough time for a controlled shutdown, depending on its supported load, battery condition, and runtime at that load. To continue streaming through longer cuts, compare a suitably engineered inverter or extended-runtime UPS. Confirm supported load, output characteristics, switchover behavior, runtime, and compatibility with the PC power supply and any existing inverter/UPS setup with the manufacturers or a qualified local installer.

There is no universal UPS capacity or runtime for an unspecified streaming PC, and the cited product information does not establish typical Indian outage duration. Choose based on measured load and manufacturer runtime data, not a blanket capacity recommendation.
Keep the internet path stable
Put the necessary modem, ONT, and router on suitable backup power, and include their load in your runtime calculation. Then test the connection during a power cut or a realistic rehearsal. A lower stream bitrate may be a sensible trade-off on a constrained connection, but it cannot restore an internet path that has failed.

YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom recommended. Test outbound upload rather than judging the connection by download speed, and choose stable encoder settings that your connection can sustain (YouTube streaming tips; YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance).
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and the ingest server. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends wired networking, checking network configuration and software interference, and contacting your ISP when the problem is outside your equipment. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it reduces quality and does not fix the underlying fault (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, updated September 30, 2024).

Prepare OBS and YouTube Live before the event
- Set up ahead of time. Prepare the encoder stream in advance and start the encoder before the scheduled event, as YouTube recommends. Check that the correct stream key is configured and that the event is ready in Live Control Room.
- Check the viewer-facing preview. Confirm the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before going live. Verify that viewers can access the event.
- Rehearse your real setup. Use the usual OBS scenes, sources, audio, encoder settings, upload connection, and power arrangement. Test any planned power switchover or backup encoder before an important stream.
- Confirm local recording. If you are recording an archive, check that the file is intact and growing during the test; do not assume it is being saved correctly.
- Monitor the stream. During the event, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the actual network and power status. YouTube recommends testing the stream, checking the preview, testing failover where used, verifying the archive, and monitoring health (YouTube live streaming tips for computers).
A rehearsal reduces avoidable surprises but cannot guarantee continuity through a power or network failure. Do not assume OBS will automatically restore every camera, capture source, or internet connection after an interruption.
Troubleshoot the failure you actually see
- The whole PC shut off: Check the measured system load, UPS watt limit, battery condition, runtime at that load, and whether the connected sockets provide battery backup. Reassess using watts and manufacturer runtime information rather than VA alone.
- The PC stayed on, but OBS reports dropped frames or disconnection: Check that the router, modem, or ONT stayed powered; test a wired connection; investigate upload stability, the route to the ingest server, VPN or security software, and ISP conditions. OBS describes these symptoms as generally pointing to a network issue rather than OBS itself.
- OBS appears to send video, but viewers report problems: Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes encoder or source issues from connection problems and advises checking encoder operation, CPU load, upload strength, and ISP support as appropriate (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- A third-party encoder will not start: For certain startup errors, YouTube’s troubleshooting steps include refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room. This is a startup troubleshooting step, not a routine fix for a power cut.
