If Nginx itself pushes the stream, manage Nginx through its systemd service. If a separate FFmpeg process publishes it, give that process a dedicated unit—or deliberately manage it as an Nginx-launched child, rather than adding a second supervisor without defining ownership. Then validate the configuration, set an appropriate restart policy, enable the right unit for boot, and check both system logs and YouTube’s preview. A service showing “active” does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Identify what systemd needs to keep running
Systemd supervises Linux processes; the Nginx RTMP configuration defines how media is relayed. Those are separate responsibilities. Before editing a unit, trace the path from the media source to YouTube and decide which process owns the publishing connection.

There is no universally correct topology: use the one that matches the installed Nginx RTMP build and how the publisher process is launched. The nginx-rtmp-module project documentation describes sample RTMP configuration and its FFmpeg exec feature.
Check YouTube ingest details before changing systemd
In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the stream URL and stream key used by the publisher. Treat the key as a credential: keep it out of public logs, screenshots, and shared unit files. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live. Sending video from the encoder and having the event live are related but distinct states; stopping transmission from the encoder stops sending content.

YouTube supports RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room if that is the intended protocol, and verify that the installed Nginx RTMP build and configuration can actually push RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to verify the RTMPS protocol/server and, for relevant SSL errors, mentions trying port 443 explicitly. Support depends on the specific build and configuration; YouTube’s support for RTMPS does not prove that a given Nginx RTMP installation can use it. Validate Nginx and choose the right service unit
If Nginx owns the publishing behavior

Check the RTMP settings, including the destination URL and stream key, in the configuration files used by your installation.

Run
nginx -tto test the Nginx configuration before applying changes. Fix any reported syntax or configuration errors first. -
Apply the configuration using your distribution’s supported service mechanism. NGINX documents

Manage startup and recovery through the existing Nginx service unit. Do not create a separate publisher unit unless you have moved the publishing responsibility to an independently managed process.

NGINX’s official documentation describes module availability and configuration testing; installation and module loading depend on the operating system and Nginx edition. Confirm that the RTMP module is installed and loaded in your build.
If a separate publisher process owns the YouTube connection
A dedicated unit can express how systemd starts and restarts that process. This is an illustrative fragment, not a tested, drop-in configuration. Replace the executable, arguments, paths, user, and any environment or secret-handling arrangements with those appropriate to your host.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetExecStart must be a valid command for the actual publisher; the ellipsis above is explanatory, not runnable syntax. Avoid putting a live stream key in a file readable by unintended users. The example’s network-online.target ordering does not guarantee that DNS, routing, credentials, or YouTube’s ingest endpoint will be available when the process starts.

Check the documentation for the systemd version installed on your host and the process’s exit behavior before choosing a policy. RestartSec=5 is a sample policy choice, not a universal or evidence-based retry interval. A restart policy acts on process exits that match its rules; it does not repair a bad command, invalid key, or configuration error.
Start the service now and arrange for boot
Enabling and starting a systemd unit are separate actions: enabling arranges for activation through configured boot or dependency targets, while starting launches it now. Use your actual unit name in place of UNIT.

After preparing or changing the unit, validate it with the tools and conventions supported by the installed systemd version.

Start the chosen unit to begin publishing now. If you changed the Nginx configuration rather than a separate publisher unit, use the distribution’s Nginx service controls to apply it.

Enable the unit if it should start through the configured boot targets. Enabling alone does not start a service immediately.

Check
systemctl status UNITfor the service state and recent messages. -
Inspect the service journal with
journalctl -u UNIT; add options supported by your installed version if you need to narrow the time range or follow new output.Rank #4

Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the expected stream appears in the preview. For a scheduled stream, complete YouTube’s Go live step when required.

Use the unit name and service commands appropriate to your distribution. Consult systemd’s documentation for starting and enabling units and for service status and journal troubleshooting.

During a maintenance window, deliberately test a recoverable process failure and observe what happens at each layer: the unit state, journal output, publisher or relay behavior, and YouTube preview. A restart after an exit is not the same as detecting a process that remains alive but is stuck or producing invalid media. Detecting that condition requires a suitable watchdog or separate health check; the sources cited here do not establish a universal Nginx RTMP watchdog setup.
Keep these outcomes distinct:

Process recovery: systemd starts a process again when its exit matches the configured restart policy.

RTMP reconnection: the publisher or relay reconnects to the ingest endpoint. This depends on the process, configuration, network, and endpoint behavior.

Healthy YouTube ingest: YouTube accepts usable video and shows it in the preview.

Event continuity: the same scheduled or live event continues without operator action. A process restart does not guarantee this; verify it for the account, event, encoder, and current YouTube interface.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is YouTube’s published behavior, not a systemd limit; systemd cannot make a single YouTube stream into an unlimited live event. See the YouTube encoder setup and streaming guidance for its current instructions.
Troubleshoot by the layer that failed
