How to Keep a YouTube Video Playing on a TV or Phone

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the control that matches what you mean by “keep playing”: turn on Autoplay to start another related video, use YouTube Premium background play to continue with the phone screen locked, cast from a phone when the TV should display the video, or set an Android Sleep timer when playback should stop after a defined period. These are separate features with different requirements.

The right setting also depends on where playback is actually happening. A TV app, a phone’s local player, and a cast queue can each have their own Autoplay state. Likewise, screen-off listening is controlled by Background Play, not by the ordinary Autoplay switch. Start by identifying the intended screen and whether you want playback to continue or deliberately stop.

Which YouTube control do you need?

YouTube uses different playback controls for different situations. Identifying the goal first prevents a common mistake: enabling Autoplay does not make a video continue after the phone screen is locked, and casting is not the same as playing on the phone.

What you want Use this feature Where it applies
Start another related video when the current one ends Autoplay YouTube on a TV, phone, computer, or a phone controlling a cast queue
Keep listening or watching after leaving the app or locking the phone Background play YouTube mobile apps for signed-in YouTube Premium members where the feature is available
Show a phone-selected video on a television Cast or TV linking A supported smart TV or streaming device
Pause automatically at bedtime or after a chosen interval Android Sleep timer The YouTube Android video player
Receive a break reminder during a long session Take a break reminder Supported YouTube mobile app versions

These controls can be combined. For example, you can cast a phone-selected queue to a TV, enable Autoplay in that cast queue, and still use the phone as a remote. Or you can use Premium Background Play and Autoplay together on a phone: Background Play keeps the session alive with the screen off, while Autoplay chooses what follows the current item.

Keep the next video playing on a TV

Turn on Autoplay in the TV app

  1. Open the YouTube app on the television.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Scroll to Autoplay.
  4. Set Autoplay to On.

With Autoplay enabled, YouTube can start a related recommendation after the current video finishes. The setting belongs to the TV app, so changing it on a phone or computer does not necessarily change the television’s setting. If several people use the TV, verify the setting in the active TV session rather than assuming another device’s preference was copied over.

Autoplay chooses a subsequent recommendation; it does not guarantee that a particular video or playlist item will be selected. If you need a specific order, build or open a queue and review the upcoming items before leaving the TV unattended.

Change Autoplay while casting

When a phone is sending YouTube to a television or streaming device, the active queue has its own controls. Connect the phone to the destination, start a video, open the phone’s casting control bar, and open the queue. Adjust the Autoplay switch there. This controls the sequence being cast; it is distinct from simply changing the Autoplay preference in the phone’s local player.

The phone’s display does not have to remain on the video itself while the TV is playing. Keep the casting controls available when you need to inspect the queue, remove an item, or change the Autoplay state. Ending the cast session, rather than merely locking the phone, is what sends the TV session back to its normal destination behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why TV playback eventually stops

Inactivity cutoff

YouTube documents an automatic Autoplay stop after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network and after four hours on Wi‑Fi. These are platform guidance thresholds, not guarantees that every television, account, network, or app build will behave identically. The mobile-network threshold is especially relevant when the playback destination is using a cellular connection or a phone hotspot rather than ordinary home Wi‑Fi.

“Continue watching?” prompt

A separate interruption can appear during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing on a TV. YouTube says a “Continue watching?” prompt may appear after 180 minutes. This is different from the inactivity cutoff: the prompt is a viewing-confirmation check during a continuous session, while the inactivity rule concerns a period in which YouTube detects no activity.

If playback stops, look at the television for the prompt before changing settings. Selecting the continue option resumes the session when the prompt is the reason playback paused. If no prompt is present, check whether the TV lost its network connection or whether the app is no longer in the active playback state; YouTube’s general help does not provide a model-by-model diagnosis for those conditions.

Do not treat the 180-minute prompt as a promise that every TV can play indefinitely once Autoplay is enabled. It is an intentional check, and selecting it may be required before the queue continues. A Sleep timer or Take a break reminder can also pause playback independently of these TV thresholds.

Keep the next video playing on a phone

Enable Autoplay

  1. Open a video in the YouTube mobile app.
  2. Use the video player’s Autoplay control, or open the app’s settings and locate Autoplay.
  3. Turn the control on and return to the player.

YouTube notes that labels and locations can differ by device. A phone’s Autoplay selection does not automatically change the setting on a TV or computer, so configure each device on which you want a continuous queue. If the phone is currently casting, use the cast control bar and queue because that is the active playback context.

Keep the player active

Autoplay is designed to continue from the active player. The next video may not start if you scroll past the player, enter a comment, or move into search instead of leaving the video screen in its playback state. Return to the player and verify that Autoplay is still enabled before treating the interruption as a network or account problem.

Similarly, opening another part of the app can change what YouTube considers the active viewing context. When testing Autoplay, let the current video reach its end without scrolling away, opening comments, or starting a search. This simple check distinguishes an interaction-related stop from a setting that is genuinely disabled.

Phone inactivity and confirmation limits

YouTube documents the same inactivity thresholds for Autoplay generally: it can stop after 30 minutes of inactivity when using a mobile network or four hours on Wi‑Fi. It also lists a separate “Continue watching?” confirmation interval of 30 minutes on mobile during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing. On the web, the corresponding confirmation interval is 60 minutes; on TV it is 180 minutes. These confirmation intervals are not replacements for the inactivity thresholds, and the two types of interruption should not be conflated.

When a phone appears to stop at one of these intervals, look for an on-screen confirmation before changing the account or reinstalling the app. A prompt means YouTube is waiting for a viewing decision; it does not necessarily indicate a failed Autoplay setting.

Keep YouTube playing with the phone screen off

Understand the difference from Autoplay

Screen-off playback is called background play. Autoplay determines what happens when one video ends; background play determines whether audio or video continues when you leave the app or lock the phone. Turning on Autoplay alone does not provide screen-off playback.

Eligibility for background play

YouTube says background play is available in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps where available when you are signed in with an account that has a YouTube Premium membership. Availability can depend on the app and location, so a Premium account does not justify a universal claim that the feature works in every region or app configuration. YouTube also states that background play is not available in the Shorts player.

Check the account currently signed in to the mobile app. Having Premium on a different account, or watching while signed out, does not establish that the active session is eligible. If the feature is missing, confirm the app and location support it before assuming the phone itself is incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the setting in the mobile app

  1. Open the YouTube mobile app while signed in to the Premium account.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Background & Downloads.
  4. Open Background Play.
  5. Choose Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers, according to how you want playback to behave.

Premium background play is the appropriate route when the goal is to keep audio going while the phone is locked or while another app is in the foreground. If the video is a Short, use a standard video instead; YouTube excludes the Shorts player from this feature.

The setting named “Headphones or external speakers” is useful when you want playback to continue only through an attached listening device. “Always on” is the broadest of the listed modes. Choose deliberately: these options control background behavior, not the recommendation sequence, and they do not replace Autoplay if you want another video to follow.

Cast a phone video to a TV

Standard Android casting

YouTube’s Android instructions use a local network connection for ordinary casting. Put the Android phone and the smart TV or streaming device on the same Wi‑Fi network, and make sure YouTube is open on both.

  1. Open YouTube on the phone and on the TV or streaming device.
  2. Choose the video on the phone.
  3. Tap Cast in the phone’s YouTube player.
  4. Select the television or streaming device from the destination list.
  5. Start playback and use the phone’s cast controls to manage the queue and Autoplay.

During casting, the phone acts as a companion: it can provide playback controls, queue management, and engagement actions while the television remains the screen showing the video. You do not have to keep the phone’s own display showing the video for the TV session to continue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Casting is different from mirroring the entire phone screen. You select a YouTube destination, and the TV plays the stream while the phone supplies controls. That arrangement is why the phone can be used for queue management without requiring the video to remain visible on the handset.

Link with a TV code when networks differ

YouTube also documents TV-code linking for cases in which the phone and destination are not on the same Wi‑Fi network. Follow the pairing instructions displayed by the YouTube app on the television, enter the code in the phone’s linking flow, and then select the linked TV as the playback destination. The exact menu wording can vary with the TV or streaming-device software, so use the code shown on that destination rather than assuming a universal button name.

Use the code route when normal discovery fails because the devices cannot share a local network. It is a documented alternative, not a guarantee that every television or streaming device supports every linking method. If the destination never shows a code or does not appear as a supported device, collect its model and software details before choosing replacement hardware.

When casting is the better solution

Choose casting when the television should remain the active display and the phone should serve as a remote control. It is also useful when the TV app’s on-screen search is inconvenient. A separate streaming device is optional: it is relevant only if the television lacks a suitable YouTube app or a supported casting route. YouTube’s casting guidance does not establish compatibility for every retail model.

  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Do not buy a streaming player merely to obtain Autoplay if the television already has a supported YouTube app or casting path. Hardware is a fallback for a missing or unsupported destination, not a requirement for ordinary phone-to-TV playback.

Pause playback automatically with Android Sleep timer

If the purpose is to stop after you fall asleep, do not use Autoplay as a substitute. On Android, YouTube provides a Sleep timer that pauses the video after a selected duration.

  1. Start the video in the YouTube Android app.
  2. Open Settings in the video player.
  3. Select Sleep timer.
  4. Choose how long the video should play before it pauses.

When the timer pauses playback, YouTube displays a silent notification. You can reset the timer if you want to extend the session. The timer is intentionally a stopping control; it does not keep a queue running indefinitely.

Sleep timer is therefore the clearest choice for a defined bedtime interval. If you need a video to stop after that interval, leave Autoplay off unless you separately want another item to begin before the timer expires.

Use the Take a break reminder

YouTube’s Take a break reminder is another stopping control, but it is based on a reminder interval rather than a fixed bedtime timer. When the reminder appears, playback pauses until you dismiss it or resume viewing. YouTube documents this feature for mobile app versions 13.17 and later. The reminder can reset under the app’s documented pause and usage conditions, so treat it as a periodic prompt rather than a one-time timer that permanently governs every future session.

Use Sleep timer when you know the exact amount of time you want playback to run. Use Take a break when you want YouTube to interrupt a long session and give you a chance to stop, stretch, or resume deliberately. Neither feature is a substitute for Background Play or Autoplay: one pauses intentionally, while the others govern continuation.

Troubleshoot the most common “YouTube stopped” cases

The next video never starts

  • Confirm that Autoplay is on in the device currently playing the video. TV, phone, and computer settings are separate.
  • If you are casting, open the phone’s cast control bar and queue, then check the queue’s Autoplay switch.
  • Keep the active video player in view on the phone; scrolling away, opening comments, or entering search can prevent the next video from starting automatically.
  • Check for a “Continue watching?” prompt before changing other settings.
  • If a Sleep timer or Take a break reminder is active, remember that either one can pause playback intentionally.

The phone stops when the screen locks

  • Autoplay does not provide screen-off playback.
  • Verify that you are signed in to the account with the YouTube Premium membership.
  • Open Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play and choose the desired mode.
  • Check whether the content is in the Shorts player, which YouTube excludes from background play.
  • Confirm that the app and your location support background playback.

The TV does not appear in the Cast list

  • For standard casting, put the phone and TV or streaming device on the same Wi‑Fi network.
  • Open YouTube on both devices before trying the Cast button again.
  • If the devices must remain on different networks, use the TV-code linking method documented by YouTube.
  • Confirm that the destination is a supported smart TV or streaming device; the general casting instructions do not guarantee support for every model.

Playback stops after a long period

First determine which interruption occurred. An inactivity cutoff, a “Continue watching?” confirmation, a Sleep timer, and a Take a break reminder are different events with different remedies. On a mobile network, YouTube documents a 30-minute inactivity threshold; on Wi‑Fi, four hours. Confirmation prompts are documented at 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on web, and 180 minutes on TV during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing. A selected Sleep timer or an active break reminder will pause playback intentionally.

Note whether the stop happened at the end of a video, while the player was idle, after the phone locked, or while a prompt was visible. That timing identifies whether to inspect Autoplay, Background Play, the cast queue, or a stopping control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When more information is needed

YouTube’s general help pages do not provide a model-by-model diagnosis for television power-saving modes, phone battery optimization, network drops, or operating-system suspension. If the documented settings are correct and playback still fails, troubleshooting needs the phone operating system, TV or streaming-device model, YouTube app version, connection type, and the exact symptom (for example, whether a prompt appears, whether the Cast destination disappears, or whether audio stops when the screen locks). Without those details, assigning a specific device-level fix would be speculative.

A practical setup for common situations

Unattended TV viewing

Turn on Autoplay in the TV’s YouTube app. If the session is cast from a phone, verify Autoplay in the cast queue as well. Expect a possible confirmation prompt during a long uninterrupted session and an automatic stop after the documented inactivity period.

Listening while commuting or exercising

Use a signed-in Premium account with Background Play enabled in the mobile app. This addresses screen-off playback; Autoplay remains a separate choice if you want another related video or track to follow the current one. If you are using Shorts, switch to a standard video because the Shorts player is excluded from background play.

Watching a phone-selected playlist on a larger screen

Cast from the phone to a supported TV or streaming device. Use the same Wi‑Fi network for ordinary casting, or link with the TV code when YouTube’s documented different-network route is required. Manage the queue from the phone while the TV displays the stream.

Falling asleep to a video

Set Android’s Sleep timer to the desired duration. If you instead want a periodic check-in during a long session, configure the Take a break reminder and resume only if you still want to continue.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Want another related item after the current one? Turn on Autoplay on the device or cast queue that is actually playing.
  2. Want playback with the phone locked? Check Premium eligibility and Background Play; Autoplay alone is insufficient.
  3. Want the TV to show content selected on the phone? Cast over the same Wi‑Fi or use documented TV-code linking.
  4. Want playback to stop after a chosen period? Use Android Sleep timer.
  5. Want a periodic wellness prompt? Use Take a break, knowing that it pauses until you dismiss or resume.
  6. If playback stops unexpectedly, identify the prompt, timing, device, and connection before changing unrelated settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I keep YouTube playing on my TV?

Open the YouTube TV app, go to Settings, choose Autoplay, and turn it on. If the TV is receiving a cast, open the phone’s cast control bar and queue and enable Autoplay there as well.

Why does YouTube stop and ask if I’m still watching?

That is a separate “Continue watching?” confirmation. YouTube documents prompts after 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, and 180 minutes on TV during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing. Select the continue option to resume when the prompt is the cause.

How do I keep YouTube playing on my phone?

Enable Autoplay in the mobile player or app settings, keep the active player in view, and avoid scrolling past it or opening comments or search before the video ends. Phone and TV Autoplay settings are separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I keep YouTube playing with the screen off?

Use Background Play, not ordinary Autoplay. YouTube says this requires a signed-in YouTube Premium account in a supported mobile app and location. Go to Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play and choose the desired mode. The Shorts player is excluded.

Can I cast YouTube from my phone to my TV?

Yes. For standard Android casting, put the phone and smart TV or streaming device on the same Wi‑Fi, open YouTube on both, tap Cast on the phone, and select the destination. You can then manage playback and the queue from the phone.

What if my phone and TV are not on the same Wi‑Fi?

YouTube also documents linking with a TV code. Follow the code shown by the YouTube app on the television and enter it in the phone’s linking flow. Menu names vary by destination software.

How do I stop YouTube after I fall asleep?

On Android, open the video player’s Settings, select Sleep timer, and choose a duration. Playback pauses when the timer expires and YouTube displays a silent notification. Reset the timer if you want to extend playback.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

What is the difference between Sleep timer and Take a break?

Sleep timer pauses after the specific duration you select. Take a break is a periodic reminder that pauses playback until you dismiss it or resume. YouTube documents the reminder for mobile app versions 13.17 and later.

Why does Autoplay stop after a long time?

YouTube documents stopping Autoplay after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network or four hours on Wi‑Fi. A separate Continue watching prompt can interrupt uninterrupted viewing. Check for a prompt, timer, or reminder before assuming a device failure.

Do I need a streaming device to keep YouTube playing on a TV?

Not necessarily. A streaming device is relevant only when the television lacks a suitable YouTube app or supported casting route. YouTube’s general guidance does not guarantee compatibility for every retail model.

The Bottom Line

Use Autoplay for the next related video, and set it on the device or cast queue that is actually playing. Use signed-in YouTube Premium Background Play for screen-off phone playback, remembering that availability varies and Shorts are excluded. Use Cast when the TV should display phone-selected content, normally over the same Wi‑Fi or through TV-code linking. For intentional stopping, choose Android’s Sleep timer or the Take a break reminder. If playback still stops, identify the prompt, timing, device, and connection before applying a device-specific fix.
