To switch a YouTube radio stream between morning, afternoon, and evening playlists, schedule the playback in the encoder or a separate playout system—not in YouTube Studio. YouTube schedules the live event; the encoder supplies the audio and video. For unattended changes at set times, you need clock-based automation in that playback layer.
Choose how the stream should change
First decide whether each playlist should have its own live event or whether the stream must remain one continuous event. Also decide whether switching must happen unattended, whether your media is local files or another feed, whether each block needs its own event page and notifications, and whether complete replay archives matter. These choices determine the setup; YouTube event scheduling alone does not schedule the playlist playing in your encoder.

Set up separate scheduled events for each block
- Prepare each block’s media. Organize the files for the morning, afternoon, or evening playlist so the correct material is ready to play. Confirm that your channel has the permissions needed to livestream.
- Schedule an event in YouTube Studio. Create a separate live event for each block and set its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. YouTube says, “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream.” Scheduling creates an event page; it does not choose or play the files.
- Connect the encoder. In YouTube Studio, get the event’s server URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder’s streaming settings, following YouTube’s instructions for using an encoder. Treat the stream key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Load the matching playlist and start the feed. Before each block, set the encoder to play that block’s media, then start the encoder feed for the scheduled event. If you want the transition unattended, arrange and test an external automation system to change the media and manage the event boundary; do not assume Studio will change playlists for you.
- Check the transition. Confirm that the outgoing feed contains the intended playlist and that the event is live before relying on the schedule. Test the complete handoff, including what happens when one event ends and the next begins.
Keep one continuous event with OBS playlist playback
OBS can play local media. Its VLC Video source supports multiple playlist items, ordered or shuffled playback, and looping. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. These controls can rotate media, but the documented OBS source does not provide a time-of-day rule for replacing one named playlist with another.
- Install VLC, then open OBS. Add a VLC Video source to the scene that supplies the stream’s visuals and audio.
- Add the media files. Put the desired files in the source’s playlist, choose ordered or shuffled playback as appropriate, and enable looping if that playlist should repeat.
- Set up time-based switching separately. If the morning playlist must change to the evening playlist automatically, use a clock-based automation or broadcast playout tool that can change the OBS media source or playlist. Verify that it supports the particular transition you need; OBS’s playlist controls alone do not establish that it will make a scheduled daily switch.
- Send the feed to YouTube. Create or select the live event in Studio, configure OBS with the event’s server URL and stream key, and start streaming. Keep the playback system and the computer running for as long as this do-it-yourself stream must remain live.
- Test a full cycle. Check the scheduled switch, playlist order, looping behavior, audio levels, and what viewers see during a transition before leaving the stream unattended.
Understand which playlist you are scheduling
A YouTube channel playlist groups videos already on YouTube. An OBS or VLC media playlist supplies files to the outgoing live feed. Changing or scheduling a YouTube channel playlist does not change which local tracks an encoder is playing. In YouTube’s API model, a liveBroadcast represents the event visible to viewers, while a liveStream carries the audio-video content. A custom application can manage broadcasts and associated streams through the Live Streaming API, but the playback scheduler still belongs in the encoder or playout layer.

Plan for archives and rights
Do not assume a 24-hour stream produces a complete replay
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a 24/7 stream will have a complete archive. If full replays are important, confirm the current YouTube archive behavior for your setup and arrange a separate recording or archive workflow where needed.
Confirm rights for every recording and composition
A successful connection and a playlist on YouTube do not establish permission to rebroadcast the music. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for each recording and composition in the relevant territories. Requirements can vary by rights holder and location.

Check local storage before buying more
For a local OBS setup, make sure the computer has enough storage for the media library. An external SSD can be a convenience for a large collection, but it is not a scheduling tool or a documented requirement for OBS playlist playback.
Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
- The scheduled event is live, but the wrong music plays: Studio schedules the event, not the encoder’s playlist. Check the active media source or the separate automation that selects the playlist.
- The VLC Video source is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then check OBS again; the source depends on VLC being installed.
- The playlist plays once and stops: Check the source’s loop setting. Looping the current playlist does not itself schedule a different playlist later.
- The stream does not change playlists at the intended time: Confirm that a separate clock-based automation exists, is enabled, and can control the relevant OBS source or playout system. Test the change before relying on it unattended.
- A handoff between events fails: Check the event’s scheduled time, the server URL and stream key configured in the encoder, and the order in which the old event ends and the new feed starts.
- A full-day replay is missing or incomplete: The documented automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it is not a guarantee of a complete archive for a 24-hour stream.
