To keep prerecorded videos livestreaming on YouTube while your computer is off, the video has to be sent by something else: a hosted service or a standalone encoder. Scheduling a YouTube event alone does not play the playlist. What has to keep running when your computer is off?
A YouTube livestream needs an encoder or hosted service to send a live feed to YouTube. If the playlist is playing in OBS or another encoder on the computer you turn off, the feed stops when that computer shuts down. To keep it going, move playback and encoding to a device that stays on or to a cloud service.
A scheduled livestream is an event page, not a playback engine. Scheduling can help viewers find the event and receive notifications, but an encoder or service still has to send the video.

The exact labels in YouTube Studio can change. Use the current Live Control Room workflow for your channel, and treat the stream key as a password.

- Check eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Confirm eligibility before preparing the playlist.
- Confirm rights. Make sure you have the rights or permission to livestream every video and audio track in the playlist. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not give you permission to rebroadcast it.
- Create the event in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, create or schedule the livestream if you want an event viewers can find in advance. Scheduling does not start playlist playback.
- Get the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key supplied in YouTube Studio into the encoder or service you chose. Do not share the key; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Prepare the playlist in the sender. Add the videos in the intended order and configure looping if the service or device supports it. Check the provider’s documentation for its supported formats and restart behavior rather than assuming all cloud encoders loop playlists.
- Connect and test. Start the sender early enough to check the Live Control Room preview, audio, video, and stream health before relying on unattended playback. Confirm the stream reaches YouTube and that the playlist behaves as intended.
- Start the event and monitor it. Confirm YouTube is receiving the feed. Have a plan to check the sender and stream health after launch; moving encoding off your computer does not remove the need to consider source, connection, or service interruptions.
Make an unattended stream more reliable
- Test the complete path. Check the actual video and audio in YouTube’s preview rather than assuming a successful upload means a successful livestream.
- Leave upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube warns that network disruptions can break streams. A local encoder needs a stable upstream connection; a hosted setup still depends on the service’s source and delivery path.
- Check recovery behavior. Find out whether the sender resumes after a connection interruption, whether it restarts the current video or the playlist, and whether you must intervene. Do not assume a service or device will recover automatically unless its current documentation confirms it.
- Plan for the end of the feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Do not assume a single feed will run indefinitely or that a longer stream will archive as expected.
- Keep the key private. Store the stream key securely and rotate it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.

A dedicated encoder is an upfront hardware purchase; a hosted service is typically a recurring service cost. Compare the total cost over the period you expect to stream, plus any hardware or power needs, rather than treating either option as cost-free.
