In OBS Studio, enable Loop on a single Media Source; for multiple files, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the encoder connected and sending valid video and audio, and check YouTube’s auto-stop setting so it does not end the broadcast when the encoder stops sending.
Loop one video or cycle through a playlist in OBS
The encoder supplies the continuing live feed. Looping controls what the encoder plays; it does not prevent a separate connection problem or a YouTube event from ending. OBS’s documented controls are described in its knowledge base article dated January 11, 2022, so labels or layouts may differ in newer versions. OBS media sources.
For one video: Media Source
- In OBS, open the scene that will carry the broadcast and add a Media Source.
- Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Make sure the source is visible in the active scene and that its playback continues there. If you hide or remove the source, its playback behavior may not match what you expect; check the scene during your test.
For several videos: VLC Video
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source.
- Add a VLC Video source, then create or select a playlist of the files you want to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback cycles through the list instead of stopping at its last item.
Use Media Source when you need one clip repeated; use VLC Video when you want several local files to play in sequence and repeat as a playlist.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then create or select the encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding fields in OBS. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as the password and address for your stream. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says these let creators start or stop streaming from the encoder; avoid a configuration that ends the event when you do not intend the encoder to stop sending.
- Start streaming from OBS and confirm the preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Start the YouTube event when you are ready to go live.
Exact encoder menus and reconnect behavior depend on the software you use. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream URL, key, preview, and event workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test the handoff before a public broadcast
Use an unlisted test event and let the video reach its end. Confirm that the clip restarts—or that the next playlist item begins—while the YouTube event remains live. YouTube recommends previewing and testing the setup before streaming publicly: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Watch the source and YouTube preview through the file transition; do not assume a visible loop setting proves the whole stream will stay connected.
- Check that both video and audio continue after the transition and that the Live Control Room reports the stream as healthy.
- During the actual broadcast, monitor stream health and playback. If the file repeats but the event ends, investigate the encoder output, network connection, and YouTube auto-stop behavior separately.
If the live event ends, archives, or needs a handoff
Ending the event is different from ending a video file
YouTube’s instruction is: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” A video reaching its end should not end the event if the encoder continues sending a valid feed. If the event does end, check whether the encoder stopped output or lost its connection, and review the event’s auto-stop setting. YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Know the 12-hour archive and DVR caveat
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If the recording matters, keep a local backup rather than relying on YouTube to preserve a broadcast that runs longer than that threshold. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume live streams, but rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Disabling DVR prevents viewers from seeking backward during the live broadcast, although a recording may still be available after it ends. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Use Live Redirect only for a transition
If you want viewers to move to another live stream or a Premiere, YouTube Live Redirect can hand them off after the current event ends. It does not keep the same event running. Set up the Premiere first; YouTube advises telling viewers to wait about two seconds for their screens to reload. Set up a Live Redirect.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops at the first video’s end
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops, but the YouTube event remains live. | Media playback settings. | For one file, check Loop on the Media Source. For multiple files, check the VLC playlist and Loop Playlist. |
| The file loops locally, but YouTube ends the event. | Encoder output, connection, or YouTube auto-stop. | Confirm OBS is still sending valid video and audio, inspect stream health in Live Control Room, and review auto-stop behavior. A playback loop alone does not control the connection. |
| The VLC Video source is unavailable or does not play. | VLC installation or playlist setup. | Install VLC on the OBS computer, then check the VLC Video source and its playlist. |
| The preview does not appear after starting OBS. | Stream URL/key or encoder connection. | Check that the stream URL and current stream key in OBS match the selected YouTube encoder stream, then retry and confirm the preview in Live Control Room. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete after a long event. | Broadcast duration. | YouTube does not guarantee capture for streams exceeding 12 hours. Make a local recording if preserving the full event matters. |

If you want a YouTube stream to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It can loop the upload while your computer is off.
