Run your encoder inside a tmux session on the remote Linux host, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder can keep running while your SSH connection is gone, and you can reconnect later to inspect or reattach. This protects against the SSH terminal closing; it does not protect against an encoder crash, a server reboot, or a lost network connection.
Keep the encoder running with tmux
Run these commands after connecting by SSH to the host that runs your encoder. Starting tmux on your own laptop does not protect a process running on the remote host.

Create a named session, or attach to it if it already exists:
tmux new-session -A -s youtube-liveThe

Inside the tmux shell, start your encoder using its usual command and YouTube stream settings. Keep the encoder running in that pane.

Detach without exiting the shell: press Ctrl+b, release both keys, then press d. You can now close SSH. Do not type
exitin the pane: exiting the shell can end the program and session. -
After reconnecting to the same host as the same user, inspect tmux sessions:

tmux list-sessionsReattach to the exact named session:
tmux attach-session -t '=youtube-live'The exact-name target avoids matching a similarly named session.

Choose the right process recovery method
The right approach depends on what you need to survive. These methods address different failure modes; none guarantees that YouTube will always receive a healthy feed.

Use tmux or screen for an SSH disconnect
If the host and encoder stay healthy but SSH drops, a multiplexer is the straightforward choice when you want to reconnect to the same terminal. screen offers a similar reattachable-session pattern.

Use nohup for a simple logged background command
A common pattern is nohup command > output.log 2>&1 &. Replace command with your actual encoder command. This backgrounds the command and redirects its output, but it does not give you tmux-style interactive monitoring or reattachment.
Use a service manager for crash or reboot recovery
If the encoder must restart after a crash or start after a reboot, configure a service manager or supervisor for your operating system and encoder. The unit, restart policy, permissions, and command depend on your deployment; there is no safe universal service definition without those details. A tmux session alone does not survive a host reboot, server termination, or encoder crash.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream lifecycle
Use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, entered in the encoder’s stream settings. YouTube describes encoders as streaming software or standalone hardware. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in logs or commands that others can access.

Consider RTMPS for the encoder-to-YouTube connection
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; the RTMPS URL is available from Live Control Room. Using RTMPS concerns the connection from the encoder to YouTube, not whether the process survives an SSH disconnect. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Know what ends a stream
YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Its guidance also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Archiving is a YouTube lifecycle detail, not a way to keep an encoder alive after its process or host stops. See YouTube’s live-stream instructions.

First identify which part failed: the encoder process, the remote machine, the outbound connection, or YouTube’s receipt of the feed. A tmux session only addresses the SSH terminal disconnect.

- The tmux session is missing: confirm you reconnected to the same host and user account, then run
tmux list-sessions. If there is no session, the process or host may have stopped, or the session may have ended. - The session exists but the stream is offline: reattach and check whether the encoder is still running and reporting an error. A session can remain even when its encoder has exited.
- The encoder runs but YouTube reports a problem: verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, and check that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube event.
- The feed is unstable or low quality: YouTube recommends using a current encoder, inspecting stream quality in the encoder, checking dashboard errors and encoder CPU load, and testing outbound internet connectivity. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
- The stream must recover from a crash or reboot: configure and test a service manager or supervisor for the actual host and encoder. Detaching tmux does not provide automatic restart or boot recovery.
