Neither prevents an interruption during reboot or guarantees that YouTube will accept the next connection.
Why a shell command is not enough
An FFmpeg process started in an interactive shell is tied to that session and is not configured as a boot-time service. A Linux server reboot terminates the process. A service manager can start FFmpeg again after boot and supervise it if it exits, but it cannot preserve the old live session through the reboot.
Ubuntu’s unattended-upgrades can be configured to reboot when an update requires it; reboot timing and configuration are adjustable. This behavior is distribution-specific. If you use Debian, Fedora, or another distribution, check that release’s update documentation rather than assuming Ubuntu’s settings apply.
Set up FFmpeg as a systemd service
1. Record the working command and protect the stream key
Start with the exact FFmpeg command that currently works: its input, codecs, output options, and YouTube ingest address. Do not put a real stream key in a public example, screenshot, or log. Store secret configuration with appropriately restricted access instead of publishing it inline.

YouTube’s LiveStreams resource provides ingestion information, including primary and, where available, backup addresses. Use the current values for your selected stream and protocol; do not substitute a sample endpoint or invent a stream name.
2. Create a unit for the long-running process
Create a systemd service unit that runs FFmpeg in the foreground. Use an explicit path to the FFmpeg executable and specify its arguments clearly. Put the real command and secret-handling details in the unit or protected configuration appropriate to your system; do not copy an example containing a real key into a public guide.

For a long-running service, configure a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure and a short, deliberate RestartSec= delay. systemd describes on-failure as the recommended setting for long-running services. Restart attempts are subject to start-rate limits, so a rapid loop of failures will not necessarily restart forever. See the systemd service documentation for the behavior of restart settings.
3. Enable the service at boot, then start it
Enable the unit so systemd starts it after a host reboot, and start it now. These are separate from the restart policy: boot enablement addresses a server restart, while Restart= addresses qualifying exits of the FFmpeg process. An intentional systemctl stop is not automatically reversed by the restart policy.

4. Check the service and YouTube after startup
Confirm that the service is active, then inspect its journal after starting it and after a planned reboot. Check YouTube’s stream health or status as well. If systemd stops retrying because of its start limits, find the underlying error before clearing the failure state or repeatedly restarting the service.
Check YouTube ingest settings if FFmpeg cannot reconnect
A restarted process can still fail to publish if its input is unavailable, its credentials or ingest details are wrong, its network is down, or YouTube does not accept the connection. For RTMPS, YouTube documents RTMP carried over TLS: the connection needs a valid rtmps ingest URL and application path, port 443, and the correct hostname for TLS SNI. A wrong hostname, port, or TLS setup can cause connection errors or timeouts. YouTube says, “RTMPS is a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” See its RTMPS ingestion guide.

YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH. RTMP and RTMPS support H.264 and are suited to normal, low, or ultra-low latency; RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. HLS and DASH offer additional codec options, including HEVC or VP9, and suit high-resolution use cases with higher latency characteristics in the comparison. Do not switch protocols without checking your codec and latency requirements.

What to expect during an update reboot
Systemd can start an enabled service after the host is back up, but it cannot eliminate the interruption: rebooting terminates FFmpeg, and viewers may experience a gap before the new process connects. Recovery depends on FFmpeg’s input being available, valid credentials and ingest details, network connectivity, and YouTube accepting the connection. Test the unit on the target distribution during a planned maintenance window rather than assuming an update reboot will be seamless.
