A UPS can bridge a local power outage; it cannot keep an ISP’s equipment or an upstream connection working. If the lesson is prerecorded, cloud playout can remove the home encoder from the ongoing stream path. It is not a substitute for an interactive class or a live camera and microphone feed.
First decide what kind of lesson you are streaming
Live or interactive teaching
If a teacher, camera, microphone, or live classroom interaction is part of the broadcast, the programme depends on equipment and connectivity at the teaching location. You need to keep the devices required for that live production powered and the internet connection usable. Cloud playback of an uploaded video cannot preserve a live lesson that originates at home or school.
Prerecorded lessons
If the programme is an uploaded recording, a cloud playout service may continue sending it to YouTube without a local computer staying on after upload. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. This changes where playback happens; it does not make recorded content live teaching.
Map the equipment and estimate the backup you need
- List the actual stream chain. Include the computer running encoder software or a standalone hardware encoder, plus each powered device needed for the connection, such as a modem, router, or fibre ONT. Add equipment your particular setup requires, such as a network switch or audio interface. YouTube describes encoders as either software or standalone hardware, and NIC’s webcast guidance calls for an encoder in an agency-led setup. The list will differ by installation. - Write down the load. Record each device’s rated or measured power draw, then add together the devices that must operate simultaneously. Do not choose a UPS from a generic household example or a computer-only estimate if the router and ONT also need power.
- Choose a bridge duration. Use your utility’s scheduled outage notices and your own acceptable interruption window to decide how long backup power must last. Check the UPS or inverter manufacturer’s runtime data at your combined load and account for battery condition.
- Test the complete chain. Run the encoder, network devices, and other required equipment on backup for longer than the outage you expect to bridge. A test of the computer alone will not show whether the internet equipment or full setup remains available.
For short bridging and orderly continuity, a UPS may be suitable for the computer or encoder and low-power network equipment. A Government of India vocational training text describes an offline UPS supplying emergency power to a PC during load shedding, but it does not size a UPS for this streaming setup. Longer-duration needs may lead you to consider a home inverter or solar backup; installation, load capacity, battery type, service support, and cost require local assessment. For either category, compare usable runtime at your real load, output capacity, transfer behavior where relevant, battery replacement, warranty, installation requirements, and local support. Check whether the internet survives the power cut
Power backup at your premises does not guarantee internet continuity. Your modem, router, or fibre ONT may need backup power, and the connection can still fail if equipment beyond your premises loses power or service. Ask your broadband provider how its access network behaves during outages; performance for a particular Indian ISP is not established here.
If you are considering mobile data as a fallback, test it at the teaching location before relying on it. Check signal strength, available data, and actual upload performance under the conditions in which you will stream. Do not assume a mobile connection will carry a broadcast simply because a phone shows signal.

Set YouTube quality to match tested upload capacity
- Measure the connection at the venue. Use a speed test on the connection you intend to stream over. Treat the result as a guide, not a guarantee that upload capacity will remain unchanged during a lesson.
- Choose a stable format. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to the tested upload connection. Its recommended bitrates vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that suits every teacher or network. For example, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p, 30 fps. These are platform recommendations for those format settings, not a claim about what an individual ISP will deliver. YouTube encoder settings.
- Rehearse with representative material. Test with the expected lesson format, including its normal audio and amount of motion. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health. If the connection is marginal, lower resolution or bitrate to a setting that performs reliably in your test.
- Monitor during the event. Watch YouTube’s stream health while live. A successful test cannot rule out a later power, network, or platform interruption.
NIC’s webcast service specifies dedicated network bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream. That figure is for the NIC government webcast service, not a universal YouTube minimum or a replacement for YouTube’s format-specific recommendations. NIC webcast requirements.
Account for local outage schedules and learner access
There is no single scheduled power-cut pattern for all of India. The Ministry of Power says electricity supply and distribution fall within the purview of state governments and distribution utilities, so check notices and rules from your own utility. In its reply published on 23 March 2026, the Ministry reported rural power availability rising from 12.5 hours in FY 2015 to 22.6 hours in FY 2025, and urban availability of 23.6 hours in FY 2025. Before the lesson, share the YouTube link and explain what learners should do if power or upstream internet fails. Prepare another way to contact students and tell them whether they should expect a recording or a rescheduled class. These steps help learners respond to an interruption; they cannot keep a disrupted live stream online.

Troubleshoot the likely failure points
