To make a YouTube stream resume after Windows restarts, save the right OBS setup, use Windows Task Scheduler to open OBS when the streaming account logs on, and decide whether OBS should start streaming automatically. Then test the full chain: a scheduled launch is not proof that the stream reached YouTube. This setup can help restore a broadcast, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime or preserve the same YouTube event and watch page.
What has to recover after a restart
A restart-safe stream depends on several pieces working in order: Windows starts, the intended streaming user session becomes available, OBS opens the right profile and scene collection, its media and devices are ready, and YouTube accepts the incoming feed. If any link fails, OBS may be open without a live broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup requires the server URL and matching stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube allows you to reset a compromised key; after resetting it, update OBS with the new key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before automating
Set up the YouTube stream credentials

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select or create a custom stream key. Copy the stream URL and key into OBS’s streaming settings, then save the configuration.

If you reset the key, replace the old value in OBS before the next scheduled launch. Do not put the key in a publicly visible script, document, or screenshot.

Decide whether YouTube’s auto-start or auto-stop setting fits your workflow. It is separate from OBS’s own option to start streaming when OBS launches.
Save and check the OBS setup

Save the profile and scene collection you intend to use. Confirm the correct scenes, media files, and audio/video devices are available after a restart.

Check that referenced video and audio files remain in locations accessible to the Windows account that will run OBS. A moved, disconnected, or permission-restricted file can leave a source unavailable.

Review the preview and audio meters before enabling automatic streaming. OBS starting successfully does not mean its sources are valid or that YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
Launch OBS at Windows sign-in with Task Scheduler
For OBS installations that need a graphical user session, use a user logon trigger rather than assuming a system-start trigger will have that session ready. Microsoft documents startup and logon as distinct trigger types; its logon-trigger guidance says the action waits for the specified user to log on. Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task.

On the General tab, name the task and choose the Windows account used for streaming. Configure it to run only when that user is logged on if OBS needs an interactive desktop session.

On the Triggers tab, choose New, then set Begin the task to At log on. Select the intended user if the task should not run for every account.

On the Actions tab, choose New and set the action to start OBS. In Program/script, enter the path to OBS Studio’s executable on your computer. Add
--startstreamingto Add arguments only if you want OBS to begin broadcasting immediately on launch. OBS lists this option in its launch-parameter documentation. -
Save the task and check its settings before relying on it. A logon trigger waits for the selected account to sign in; a task alone does not make that account sign in automatically.
If the computer must stream without anyone present, automatic sign-in may be needed, but it has security and operational consequences. The basic scheduled-task setup does not remove that requirement. Consider who can access the machine and whether unattended sign-in is appropriate before enabling it.

Choose what should happen when OBS opens
Launch OBS without starting the stream
Omit --startstreaming if a person should inspect the profile, media, preview, or audio before going live. This is safer when content needs a manual check or when an unexpected restart should not immediately resume a broadcast.
Launch OBS and start streaming
Use --startstreaming when the saved setup is reliable and the channel should go live without an operator. The argument starts streaming; it does not verify the correct media is loaded, repair a broken source, or confirm YouTube has accepted the feed.
Plan for YouTube’s event lifecycle
A “24/7 stream” describes the intended service pattern, not necessarily one endless YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder instructions state, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule makes it important to plan how broadcasts will be restarted or recreated and to check whether the resulting watch page and audience experience suit the channel. The available guidance does not establish that reconnecting after every Windows restart will preserve the same event or watch page. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Test a controlled restart and verify the broadcast

Before depending on the task, arrange a controlled restart at a time when a brief interruption is acceptable.

After Windows restarts, confirm the intended user session is active and OBS opened with the expected profile and scene collection.

Check that the preview shows the expected picture and that the relevant audio is present. If sources are missing, fix those before treating the setup as recovered.

In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm an incoming feed and review stream health. Then check that the event is accessible on its public watch page. YouTube recommends checking the preview, monitoring stream health, and verifying event accessibility; see its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
A successful test confirms the conditions you tested; it is not a guarantee against future Windows updates, power loss, network outages, device changes, or YouTube interruptions.

OBS did not open: Check Task Scheduler’s task history and confirm the trigger is tied to the account that actually logged on. A system-start trigger and a user-logon trigger are different events.

OBS opened but did not stream: Confirm whether the task includes
--startstreaming, whether the saved configuration is correct, and whether the intended YouTube account and stream key are configured. -
The preview is blank or media is missing: Check that files and devices are available to the streaming account and that source paths have not changed.

YouTube does not receive the feed or rejects the key: Retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update OBS. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance recommends refreshing the stream key and updating the encoder; for software that uses a sign-in flow rather than a stream key, it directs users to the software provider.

The stream starts but is unstable: Check the encoder’s output and network connection, choose bitrate settings appropriate to the available network, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance recommends testing settings and monitoring health.

The event ends or the watch page changes: Review how the stream was created and plan for YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior. Do not assume a reconnect will preserve the same event.
