You can’t rely on a Streamlabs Talk Studio broadcast to continue after your computer goes to sleep. Talk Studio runs in a browser, so keep the computer awake and connected for the duration of the broadcast. You can turn off the display without putting the computer to sleep, but those are separate power settings.
Keep the computer awake during your broadcast
Set the sleep timeout for the power state you’ll use—plugged in, on battery, or both—so the computer stays awake through the planned broadcast. Keep it powered and connected to the internet, and test the settings with a short broadcast before relying on them for an important event.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the relevant power state, set the sleep timeout so the device will not sleep during the broadcast. Check both the plugged-in and battery settings if you might switch between them.
- If you use a laptop, check what happens when you close the lid. Many laptops sleep when closed; keep it open or adjust the device’s lid behavior so it stays awake.
Available options can vary by device. Microsoft’s instructions are at Microsoft Support.
Mac
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen and review the “Turn display off” choices for the power state you’ll use.
- When the Mac is connected to power, check Battery settings for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.
- Choose settings that let the display turn off if desired while preventing the computer from sleeping during the broadcast.
Apple documents the relevant controls in Apple Support. Settings labels and availability can vary by macOS version and device.

Keep the connection stable
Streamlabs recommends Ethernet where practical and specifies at least 5 Mbps upload. Its Talk Studio guide gives these resolution-specific requirements and recommendations; they are Streamlabs’ published figures, not independent measurements:

End the broadcast deliberately
When you are ready to finish, use Talk Studio’s End Stream button. Streamlabs says, “If you do not press the End Stream button, your stream will not go offline.” That instruction is about ending a broadcast; it does not mean the broadcast will keep transmitting if the computer sleeps.

The settings above prevent sleep; they do not make Talk Studio independent of your computer. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming as a separate workflow, including computer software and standalone hardware encoders. That is an alternative setup, not evidence that a Talk Studio session survives computer sleep. See YouTube’s encoder streaming overview.

Troubleshooting checklist
- The broadcast stops when the screen goes dark: Check whether the computer slept, rather than merely turning off its display. Review the sleep timeout for the active power state.
- The laptop sleeps when you close it: Check lid behavior or leave the lid open during the broadcast.
- The computer sleeps after unplugging: Review the battery timeout as well as the plugged-in timeout.
- The stream becomes unstable: Check the upload speed against Streamlabs’ published figures and, where practical, use Ethernet.
- The stream still appears live after you finish: Press End Stream in Talk Studio rather than assuming closing the browser or letting the computer sleep will end it correctly.
