How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Education Stream Playing After an OBS Crash

OBS reconnects do not restart a crashed process. Set up a tested YouTube backup encoder for failover and an external supervisor to relaunch OBS.

OBS’s Automatic Reconnect can restore a dropped connection, but it does not restart OBS if the program crashes. For a resilient 24/7 YouTube education stream, use a separately configured backup encoder for viewer failover, and arrange an external supervisor to relaunch OBS if its process exits. Test both recovery paths in a controlled stream before relying on them.

What to do when OBS crashes during a 24/7 stream

There are two different failures to plan for:

  • OBS is still running but loses its connection: OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting is intended for connection loss.
  • The OBS process exits or crashes: reconnect settings cannot relaunch a program that is no longer running. You need an external process monitor, scheduled task, or system service to start OBS again.

Restarting OBS and maintaining uninterrupted playback are also separate goals. A restarted OBS instance may take time to reconnect, and the cited OBS launch option does not itself provide failover in YouTube’s player. YouTube’s documented continuity approach is a separately configured backup encoder, tested to confirm the player switches to its feed.

Configure YouTube and protect the stream key

  1. Create or open the YouTube stream configuration in YouTube Studio, then configure the encoder using the stream key shown in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential and address an encoder uses to send its feed.
  2. Restrict access to the key. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that ingest. Do not publish it or place it in scripts, logs, or shared documents that others can access.
  3. Choose whether to reuse a custom key and review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube makes these options available in stream settings; choose them deliberately for your operating procedure.
  4. Keep the primary and backup paths distinct. The backup encoder must be separately configured to send its feed to the YouTube stream. Merely owning a second computer or encoder does not establish failover.

Set up and test a backup encoder

YouTube recommends preparing a backup encoder and testing whether playback rolls over when the primary stops. Its test guidance is specific: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable). Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.”

  1. Configure the primary OBS encoder and a separate backup encoder for the intended YouTube stream.
  2. Start the stream and verify that the intended primary feed appears in the player.
  3. With the backup feed ready, stop the primary encoder—or disconnect its Ethernet cable as YouTube suggests for a test.
  4. Watch the player and confirm it switches to the backup feed. Do not treat a backup as proven until you have observed the actual rollover.
  5. Restore the primary path and document how the operator should respond to a real failure, including who checks playback and which encoder should be active.

YouTube recommends upload capacity for the combined primary and backup bitrates, plus 20% additional headroom. Its guidance says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The backup feed consumes bandwidth too; a connection that can carry only the primary stream may not sustain both feeds at once. Check available upload capacity under the conditions in which the stream will run.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choosing backup-encoder equipment

A hardware live-streaming encoder is one possible backup source. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but choosing hardware alone does not configure or test failover. Before buying a model, verify its supported ingest protocol, stream-key handling, output resolution and bitrate, unattended restart behavior, and compatibility with your planned YouTube failover setup directly with its manufacturer.

Restart OBS if its process crashes

OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter: it starts streaming when OBS launches. This is a launch behavior, not an automatic crash-recovery feature. To recover from an OBS process failure, pair the launch parameter with an external supervisor that detects the stopped process and starts OBS again.

  1. Test OBS’s launch behavior first. Launch OBS with --startstreaming in a controlled, unlisted test stream and verify that it starts streaming as expected.
  2. Use an external supervisor. Select a process monitor, scheduled task, or system service appropriate for your operating system. Configure it to detect an unexpected OBS exit and relaunch OBS. The supervisor—not OBS’s launch parameter—is what provides the restart after a crash.
  3. Set the working directory for automated launches. OBS documentation says automated launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory.
  4. Verify the full recovery sequence. In a controlled stream, simulate the failure you need to handle, confirm the supervisor starts OBS, and check whether YouTube playback returns or the backup encoder takes over. A successful application restart alone does not prove viewer-side continuity.
  5. Keep a human escalation path. A supervisor may restart a process, but it cannot establish from these instructions alone that the correct scene, feed, audio, or viewer playback has recovered. Have someone check the player and respond to failures that persist.

Keep a recording of long educational streams

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a full-day program matters, keep a local recording rather than relying solely on YouTube’s archive. Confirm that local storage can hold the recording for the planned duration.

Choose the recovery approach for your program

Approach Failure it addresses What to account for
OBS Automatic Reconnect Connection loss while OBS remains running It does not restart an OBS process that has crashed.
External OBS supervisor with --startstreaming OBS process exit, by relaunching the application The supervisor is external; configure and test it for your operating system. A relaunch alone does not prove player continuity.
Separately configured YouTube backup encoder Primary encoder stopping, with playback continuity if YouTube’s player rolls over to the backup Configure a second source, allow bandwidth for both bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test the actual rollover.
Cloud playback of prerecorded lessons A different workflow for a continuous stream made from prerecorded video It is not, on the available description, documented as takeover or crash recovery for a live OBS session.

Cloud option for a prerecorded education stream

YouTube’s encoder guide describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 YouTube live streaming of prerecorded videos. That makes it a potential alternative production workflow for lessons or playlists, not a documented way to take over a live OBS session after a crash. Check the provider’s current features and availability before choosing it.

Troubleshoot interruptions and failed recovery

  • OBS disconnects, then reconnects, but the stream still has interruptions: Automatic Reconnect addresses connection loss, not every continuity problem. Test a separately configured backup encoder and confirm player rollover.
  • OBS crashes and stays closed: Automatic Reconnect cannot relaunch an exited process. Check that an external supervisor is enabled and configured to start OBS, then test the full sequence.
  • OBS relaunches but does not start streaming: Confirm the launch command includes --startstreaming, verify the behavior in a controlled stream, and ensure automated launches use the folder containing obs64.exe as their working directory.
  • YouTube does not switch to the backup feed: Verify that the backup encoder is separately configured for the intended stream, then repeat YouTube’s failover test and watch the player. A backup source that has not passed this test should not be treated as working failover.
  • The primary and backup feeds struggle to run together: Check whether available upload capacity covers their combined bitrates plus 20% headroom, as YouTube recommends.
  • A long stream is missing from the archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when preserving the complete program is important.
