To keep a 24/7 kirtan audio stream running on an Indian cloud VPS, send a cleared playlist or live audio source to an Icecast mountpoint, then configure process recovery, source reconnection, a fallback stream, and monitoring. A VPS being online does not by itself guarantee continuous programming: the source can still stop, listeners can lose the stream, or the host can hit bandwidth limits.
Confirm rights before setting up the stream
Make sure you have permission for the specific compositions, recordings, and performances you plan to transmit. Rights to a devotional composition do not automatically give you rights to a commercial recording of it. Confirm that permissions cover continuous streaming, your intended territories, and monetization, if any.
India’s Copyright Act defines broadcasting and communication to the public broadly, and Chapter VIII of the Copyright Rules describes notice and royalty procedures for certain uses by broadcasting organizations. Those provisions do not, by themselves, establish that every internet radio or platform stream qualifies for the statutory licensing route. Consult a qualified Indian copyright professional before relying on it. See the Copyright Rules, Chapter VIII and the Copyright Act, Chapter I.
StreamNeo’s kirtan and Gurbani setup playbook advises confirming each participating performer’s agreement for continuous streaming and intended monetization. It also cautions against rebroadcasting a Gurdwara telecast or extracting its audio for a loop. Treat metadata, respectful presentation, and moderation as part of responsible channel management—not as substitutes for permission.

Understand the source, server, and listener path
An audio station has two main parts: a source client and a streaming server. The source client encodes and sends audio to an Icecast server; listeners connect to a mountpoint, the addressable path for that stream. The source and server can run on the same VPS, but they do not have to. Icecast’s basic setup guide explains the source-to-server arrangement.
- Recorded playlist: a player/source process reads recordings cleared for continuous use and sends them to the mountpoint.
- Live kirtan: microphones or instruments are captured, mixed, and encoded by a source client before audio is sent to Icecast.
OBS is one encoder option mentioned by the National Informatics Centre for government webcast services, alongside media server and HLS components. That is an example of a webcast stack, not a requirement for every audio-only radio stream. NIC’s Webcast Services page describes its service context.

Build the VPS stream step by step
- Choose a host and location. Select an Indian region if most listeners are in India, then check sustained outbound capacity, transfer or egress limits, overage charges, network policy, support, and available backup and restart controls. A location in India does not guarantee low latency for listeners elsewhere.
- Install and configure Icecast. Set the listening socket and port, create protected source and administrator credentials, choose a mountpoint, and set listener limits to fit the server’s capacity and expected audience. Follow the Icecast configuration reference for the relevant settings.
- Prepare the source. For a playlist, point a player/source process at the cleared audio files and configure it to connect to the Icecast mountpoint. For live audio, connect the capture and encoding chain to a source client and configure it to send to that mountpoint.
- Set stream metadata. Use accurate station and track information where your source supports it. Do not present misleading titles or imply an affiliation you do not have.
- Protect credentials. Keep source and admin passwords out of public stream URLs, screenshots, and public configuration files. Restrict access to the server and its configuration.
- Test from outside the VPS. Open the public mountpoint from a separate device or network. Check that audio plays, metadata is as intended, and Icecast statistics show the source connected; Icecast documents the statistics view in its setup guide.
Plan for recovery, not just uptime
Continuous hosting and continuous audio are different things. A player can exit, a source connection can drop, or a restart can leave the stream silent. Configure the operating system or process supervisor to restart the source and server when they fail, and configure the source client to reconnect to Icecast. Monitor source status and listener statistics, review logs, and test recovery instead of assuming it works.
Configure a fallback mount or fallback file in a compatible stream format so listeners have something to hear if the main source disconnects. Icecast’s configuration reference explains fallback mounts and warns that listeners may be disconnected if the fallback is unavailable. Test by deliberately stopping the main source and checking both listener playback and reconnection behavior.

Estimate capacity before choosing a VPS
Outbound demand rises with both encoded bitrate and concurrent listeners. As a planning relationship, multiply the audio bitrate by the number of simultaneous listeners, then allow additional headroom for protocol overhead and other server traffic. This is not a measured audience forecast: actual demand depends on the bitrate, listener count, and provider network conditions.
Compare the provider’s India-region availability, sustained outbound throughput, transfer allowance and excess-usage charges, recovery and snapshot controls, monitoring options, and support response. No current provider plan sizes or prices are established here; verify current terms directly with each provider before buying. Test the stream under the listener load you expect rather than assuming advertised capacity translates into a particular stream quality or uptime.

Use capture hardware only for a live source
A prerecorded playlist running from the VPS does not need an audio interface. For a live microphone or instrument feed, capture hardware may be useful if it provides the inputs and connections your source setup requires. Choose it only after identifying the instruments or microphones, input count, connectors, and operating environment; no specific model can be recommended without those details.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Listeners cannot open the mountpoint | Incorrect address, port, firewall rule, or Icecast listener configuration | Confirm the configured mountpoint and listening port, check inbound network rules, and test from a separate network. |
| Icecast is reachable but reports no source | The source client is stopped, has the wrong mountpoint or credentials, or cannot reconnect | Check the source process and its logs, verify its destination and credentials, and confirm Icecast statistics show the source connected. |
| The stream goes silent after the source stops | No working fallback is configured or the fallback is unavailable | Configure a compatible fallback mount or file and test it by stopping the main source. |
| The source does not return after a restart | Automatic process restart or source reconnection is missing or misconfigured | Check the process supervisor or startup configuration, inspect logs, and test a restart and reconnection deliberately. |
| Playback works locally but fails for remote listeners | Network rules, provider policy, routing, or outbound limits may be involved | Test externally, review host networking and limits, and contact the provider if the route or capacity is uncertain. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that plays uploaded recordings, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube playback of uploaded videos, not a live microphone feed or an Icecast radio mountpoint. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
