Windows settings can reduce interruptions from planned updates and relaunch a streaming app after a restart, but they cannot guarantee that an animated story stream will return to live output unattended. Set active hours to reduce disruptive restarts, configure an app launch at sign-in or a suitable Task Scheduler task, and test the complete recovery sequence on the actual streaming PC.
What Windows can—and cannot—do
Windows updates sometimes require a restart to finish installing. Active hours can help prevent inconvenient restarts while the PC is in use, but they do not prevent every restart or provide an uptime guarantee. Startup apps and Task Scheduler can launch a program; neither proves that your particular animation or streaming app will restore its project, authenticate, reconnect to YouTube, and resume visible output.
The practical goal is therefore two-part: reduce the chance of a restart during your planned stream window, then make recovery easier if one happens. The steps below configure Windows mechanisms, not any particular streaming application.
Choose an update window that avoids your stream
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Choose automatic adjustment or set active hours manually to cover the period when the PC is operating the stream.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.
- Set the hours to cover the period when the stream PC is in use.
Microsoft describes active hours as a way to help prevent inconvenient restarts while you are using the device. Windows Update also offers options to schedule a restart and temporarily pause updates. A pause is temporary, not a durable way to keep a 24/7 machine from updating. Microsoft says that a device needs to restart to finish installing an update. Microsoft’s active-hours guidance and its Windows Update FAQ explain these controls.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. For a continuously connected streaming PC, check Microsoft’s current guidance and plan an appropriately supported operating system rather than relying on the absence of future update restarts.
Windows 11 update consolidation is not a guarantee
Microsoft announced on August 14, 2026 that, on eligible Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates released on or after July 28, 2026 would be combined with the monthly security update. The change is rolling out gradually; urgent updates may be exceptions, and delayed updates will not be held indefinitely. It does not apply universally to every Windows PC. Microsoft’s update-consolidation notice describes eligibility and exceptions.

Configure the streaming app to launch again
Startup apps: simplest for sign-in
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup. Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Enable the streaming or animation application if it appears in the list.
- If it is not listed, Microsoft documents adding a shortcut to the current user’s Startup folder. Press Windows key + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter; place the supported app shortcut in the folder that opens. For all users, the corresponding folder is opened withshell:common startup.
These methods launch a program when that user signs in. If the PC restarts but no one signs in, a sign-in startup shortcut may not run. And even after launch, the app may require a visible desktop session, authentication, or manual project selection. Microsoft’s startup-applications guide covers the sign-in launch options.
Task Scheduler: more control over triggers and retries
Task Scheduler can launch a program based on a time or event trigger. It also has settings for starting a missed task when available and retrying a task after failure. Use it only with an executable and launch method supported by the app vendor.

- Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a trigger appropriate to the machine and application—for example, at system startup or at user sign-in. The right choice depends on whether the app needs an interactive desktop.
- Set the action to start the application using the vendor-supported executable and arguments. Do not assume a generic command line, hidden launch, elevated privileges, or stored credentials are safe or suitable.
- In the task’s settings, consider Start the task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed (the
StartWhenAvailablebehavior) and configure a restart interval and retry count if appropriate. Microsoft’sRestartOnFailureschema requires both a retry count and an interval. - Save the task, then test it using the same account and session conditions the machine will have after a real restart.
Task Scheduler’s triggers and settings automate program launching; they do not establish that the streaming app can restore playback or reconnect to a streaming endpoint. See Microsoft’s Task Scheduler overview, task settings documentation, and restart-on-failure schema.
Test recovery on the actual stream PC
Do not treat an app appearing on the desktop as proof that the broadcast has recovered. Test the full sequence during a maintenance window, with a way to restore the stream manually if it fails.

- Install updates and restart the PC.
- Confirm whether the expected user account signs in. If the app needs an interactive desktop, verify that the desktop session exists; Windows launch settings alone do not establish that the machine will sign in for you.
- Check that the application opens, has the correct story project or scene selected, and is authenticated as required.
- Verify the animation, audio and video output, network reconnection, and that the stream is visibly live at its destination.
- Separately test what happens if the streaming application exits while Windows remains running. Confirm whether the app or its scheduled task restarts it, and whether the app actually restores live output.
Windows documentation describes how programs can be launched, not whether a particular application can restore its scene or reconnect to YouTube. That behavior must be confirmed with the app you use and the account and network conditions on your machine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Startup apps or Task Scheduler?
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off and dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Startup apps or Startup folder | A program that should open whenever a user signs in. | Simpler to configure, with less trigger and retry control; depends on a sign-in session and the app’s own recovery behavior. |
| Task Scheduler | A program that needs a chosen time or event trigger, or a configured retry after task failure. | More setup; the trigger and launch context must suit the app, and retries do not guarantee restored playback or a visible desktop. |
Do not confuse wake-from-sleep with reboot recovery
Task Scheduler’s WakeToRun setting can wake a sleeping computer for a scheduled task, but it is not a feature for recovering from an update reboot. Microsoft notes that the display may remain off when the computer wakes for a task. A task running while the screen is off is not proof that an animated stream has returned to visible live output. See Microsoft’s WakeToRun documentation, last updated February 22, 2024.
