1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a Hindi audiobook stream, set a clean narration level at its source, use OBS’s meters to watch peaks without treating them as a loudness target, then make a test recording and listen before going live. For YouTube Live stereo audio, use AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Hindi does not require a separate audio profile.
What should my OBS audio levels be for YouTube?
There is no single OBS meter value that guarantees a good audiobook stream. OBS’s main colored meter shows peak level; its moving black VU indicator is an RMS-style estimate integrated over 300 ms, not a modern standards-based loudness meter. Use both as clues, and judge the result by listening to a representative passage.
OBS identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level. These are meter reference points and headroom guidance—not instructions to make every narrator average or peak at those exact values. Keep the stream below clipping; the exported audio must stay under 0 dBFS. OBS’s peak hold remains visible for 20 seconds, which can help reveal a sudden loud word or noise. See the OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.
Set the narration level in OBS, step by step
- Identify the narration source. It may be a microphone, audio interface, or media playback source. Speak or play the audiobook passage and check which source moves in the OBS Audio Mixer. Avoid unintentionally mixing desktop audio, alerts, or another microphone into the narration. If the intended meter stays inactive, check that source’s selected device, playback, and connections.
- Adjust the source before the OBS fader. Begin with the gain control on the microphone or interface, or the relevant operating-system or application level. OBS advises: “Always start at the device in question.” Listen at the earliest available headphone or monitor output, then make small changes. This helps correct the incoming signal rather than merely moving an already noisy or distorted signal up and down inside OBS. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Watch peaks, but do not chase the red. The colored bar indicates peaks, not a complete measure of perceived loudness. Use the black VU indicator as a rougher impression of level, and listen for soft phrases, emphatic words, distortion, and unwanted noise. OBS’s -20 dBFS and -9 dBFS references describe alignment and permitted maximum guidance; they are not universal audiobook targets.
- Use the mixer fader for final balance. Once the source arrives cleanly, adjust its OBS mixer fader to balance it against any other audio you intentionally include. Add a Gain filter only if you need a level correction; extra gain uses up headroom. To add one, open the source’s Filters menu from the mixer and select the Gain filter. OBS describes the audio filters in its OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Check channel routing. OBS defaults to stereo. A mono narration source is normally played through both left and right channels for viewers. If a stereo source is active on only one side, check its routing or use Downmix to Mono where appropriate. Confirm that the headphones or monitor output you are listening to is not itself one-sided.
- Record and review a representative passage. Read or play several minutes at the pace and volume you plan to use, including soft lines and emphatic words. Listen to the recording at a normal playback level on headphones or speakers. The narration should remain clear without clipping, distortion, pumping, or distracting background noise. Make small adjustments and record again if necessary.
What YouTube Live audio settings should I use?
| Audio setup | Codec | Sample rate | Audio bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo narration | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz | 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 surround | AAC | 48 kHz | 384 Kbps |
These are the audio settings listed on YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed 2026-10-03. A narration-focused stream will normally use stereo output unless you have a deliberate surround workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport; that is a connection protocol, not a loudness or audio-level setting.

OBS’s overview gives around 160 Kbps as generic streaming audio-bitrate advice, while YouTube specifies 128 Kbps for stereo live audio. For a YouTube destination, use YouTube’s published stereo setting rather than treating the generic OBS figure as a platform requirement.
Check the sound and stream before the audience arrives
OBS and YouTube both recommend testing before the live broadcast. In OBS, record and review the representative passage; also listen through Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties so you can assess the sound as it reaches OBS. Then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before going live. YouTube advises using audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast when testing, and checking stream health during the event. Its instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Troubleshooting: common audiobook audio problems
- The narration meter does not move. Confirm the intended source is selected, the device or media is actually producing sound, and its connections are in place. Make sure you are watching the correct Audio Mixer source.
- Some words clip or sound distorted. Reduce gain at the source first, then recheck the signal arriving in OBS. Do not use the OBS fader to disguise an overloaded input. Record the loudest representative lines again and listen before streaming.
- Quiet phrases disappear, but loud phrases are already strong. Listen to the source and recording before adding gain. Raising a signal that already has loud peaks reduces headroom and can cause clipping. Make small source-level changes and review another representative recording.
- The voice is only in one ear. Check stereo routing and whether the source has activity on only one side. For mono narration, OBS normally sends it to both playback channels; Downmix to Mono may help when appropriate.
- The OBS meter looks healthy, but the voice still sounds wrong. The main bar reports peaks, not perceived loudness or intelligibility. Check the recording and OBS monitoring for noise, muffling, distortion, and inconsistent delivery rather than relying on the meter alone.
- YouTube reports a stream issue. Review YouTube’s preview and stream health, confirm the chosen audio profile matches stereo or 5.1 output, and repeat a test with conditions close to the planned broadcast.
