Installing plugins does not by itself configure or verify a YouTube stream: you also need the right capture, audio, encoding and muxing elements, plus the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
Install the runtime plugins and tools
For a practical starting point on Ubuntu, open a terminal and run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly gstreamer1.0-libavThis installs the command-line tools and the Base, Good, Bad, Ugly and libav runtime families listed in the GStreamer project’s Ubuntu/Debian installation guidance. It is a broad starting set, not a guarantee that every pipeline dependency is present or that one fixed package list suits every Ubuntu release. The project guidance is general to Ubuntu and Debian; it does not establish release-specific package versions or India-specific repositories.
When to install development or additional platform packages
If you are compiling an application against GStreamer, install the development packages as well. The project’s fuller command is:

sudo apt-get install libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-dev gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly gstreamer1.0-libav gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-x gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-gl gstreamer1.0-gtk3 gstreamer1.0-qt5 gstreamer1.0-pulseaudioThe development packages are for building software; the X, ALSA, graphics, GTK, Qt and PulseAudio packages serve particular interfaces or platforms. Add them when your application or pipeline needs them rather than assuming they are required for every YouTube stream. For a compiled program, the project documents pkg-config --cflags --libs gstreamer-1.0 for obtaining core-library compiler and linker flags.
Check that the pipeline’s elements are discoverable
Use gst-inspect-1.0 to inspect the elements named in your pipeline. For a common H.264-over-RTMP(S) setup, start with:

gst-inspect-1.0 rtmpsinkThe GStreamer gst-inspect-1.0 documentation describes the tool as a way to report available plugins and elements and show details for a named element. If inspection cannot find an element, check the installed plugin family, your Ubuntu release and repository configuration, and the environment in which GStreamer is running. A successful inspection only confirms local discovery; it does not demonstrate that a complete pipeline or a YouTube connection works.
What these two elements do
x264encencodes raw video as H.264 and belongs to the x264 plugin supplied by GStreamer Ugly Plug-ins. See the x264enc documentation.rtmpsinksends data to a streaming server through RTMP, uses librtmp, and belongs to the rtmp plugin supplied by GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. See the rtmpsink documentation.
Neither element is a complete streaming pipeline. Your actual setup may also need elements for the video and audio source, conversion, encoding, muxing and output format. Identify those from the pipeline you intend to run and inspect each required element on the target system.

Configure YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint
- In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS URL and stream key for your stream.
- Configure an encoder that supports RTMPS to use the supplied endpoint and key. Do not substitute a guessed server address.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a signal to your channel’s stream.
- If an SSL error persists after you check the supplied URL and configuration, YouTube advises trying port 443.
YouTube Help explains that “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. The rtmpsink documentation says the element uses librtmp and supports URLs librtmp supports; that does not establish that every Ubuntu build and librtmp combination will work unchanged with every YouTube endpoint. Confirm the installed element and test your actual configuration.
Use HLS only when you need that ingestion protocol
HLS is not a package switch that turns an RTMP pipeline into an HLS one. It is a distinct YouTube ingestion mode with different endpoint, transport and media requirements. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance requires an HTTPS URL, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, transport-stream segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous-stream delivery because it sends segments.

The same guidance lists HEVC as an additional video option for HLS alongside H.264, and AAC, AC3 or EAC3 for audio. Choose HLS when your encoder and workflow need that mode or codec support; otherwise, configure the protocol supported by your chosen encoder and YouTube endpoint.

Troubleshoot common installation and connection failures
gst-inspect-1.0cannot findx264enc: confirm thatgstreamer1.0-plugins-uglyis installed, then rerun inspection. Check that you are inspecting the same system and environment that will run the pipeline.gst-inspect-1.0cannot findrtmpsink: confirm thatgstreamer1.0-plugins-badis installed and inspect again. Package availability can vary with Ubuntu release and repository setup.- Inspection succeeds but the pipeline fails: inspection does not validate its other source, audio, conversion, codec, mux or output elements. Inspect every element named by the pipeline and check that the linked formats are compatible.
- The sink exists but the connection fails: verify that the pipeline uses the RTMPS URL and key supplied in Live Control Room, and that the installed librtmp supports the URL form. If the error is specifically SSL-related and persists after checking the URL, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
- You configured RTMP elements but intend to send HLS: revisit the pipeline and endpoint for HLS’s HTTPS, request, segment, playlist and codec requirements. HLS is a different ingestion mode, not an RTMP sink setting.
