The easiest connection is HDMI: plug the DVD player’s HDMI OUT into the TV’s HDMI IN, select that HDMI input with the TV remote, insert a disc, and press Play. If the player has only yellow, white, and red outputs, use the TV’s matching composite input—or a powered RCA-to-HDMI converter when the TV has HDMI inputs only.
First, check the ports
Look at the back or side of both devices before buying a cable. Port availability varies by model, and many newer TVs no longer include analog inputs.

A coaxial digital audio connector carries sound only; it cannot replace a video connection. Some TVs use a shared composite/component input or a proprietary 3.5-mm adapter, so check the manual for the exact TV model before forcing a cable into a similar-looking jack. Use HDMI when both the player and TV have the appropriate ports. It carries video and audio through one cable and is normally the simplest, highest-quality connection available for DVD playback. It cannot create detail that is not present on the DVD, however.

You need: a DVD player with HDMI OUT, a TV with HDMI IN, and one suitable HDMI cable.
- Turn off both devices if their ports are difficult to access.
- Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the DVD player’s HDMI OUT.
- Connect the other end to an available TV HDMI IN, such as HDMI 1.
- Turn on the TV and DVD player.
- Press the TV remote’s Input, Source, External Input, or TV/Video button.
- Select the HDMI input used—for example, HDMI 1.
- Insert the DVD and press Play.
For ordinary HDMI playback, separate red and white audio cables are not needed. An unusual DVI setup or a model with a special HDMI audio arrangement may require separate audio; consult the relevant manual. Panasonic provides a visual connection example in its DVD player hookup guide.
How to connect an older DVD player with red, white, and yellow cables
Composite AV is common on older DVD players. Match the cable colors and labels:

- White: left audio
- Red: right audio
- Connect the DVD player’s yellow VIDEO OUT to the TV’s yellow VIDEO IN.
- Connect white AUDIO OUT/L to white AUDIO IN/L.
- Connect red AUDIO OUT/R to red AUDIO IN/R.
- Turn on both devices.
- Choose the TV source labeled AV, Video, Composite, or the relevant input number.
- Insert a disc and press Play.
Composite is an analog, standard-definition connection, so its picture will usually be less clean than HDMI. Do not connect the yellow cable to a red, blue, or green component jack unless the TV manual explicitly says that the green Y jack also accepts composite video. Similar colors and connector shapes do not mean the signals are interchangeable.
How to use component cables
Component video can work when both devices have matching Y/Pb/Pr inputs. Connect the video cables by their labels:
- DVD player Y to TV Y or green
- DVD player Pb to TV Pb or blue
- DVD player Pr to TV Pr or red
- DVD player white audio to TV left audio
- DVD player red audio to TV right audio
Component video does not carry audio, so the separate white and red audio cables are essential. Select Component on the TV after connecting everything, then start the disc.

Component is analog, and capabilities vary by equipment. Do not assume that every component connection provides high-definition output. If the image is black-and-white, missing, or oddly colored, check the labels—not just the colors—and verify that the TV is set to the component source.

What to do if the TV has HDMI only
If the DVD player has only yellow, white, and red outputs while the TV has no compatible analog input, use a powered RCA/composite-to-HDMI converter. A passive cable cannot convert an analog RCA signal into HDMI.
Buy a device described as RCA or composite input to HDMI output. Do not buy an HDMI-to-RCA converter; that works in the opposite direction.

- Connect the player’s yellow, white, and red AV OUT cables to the converter’s RCA IN.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the converter’s USB or other power cable. Many converters will not work without external power.
- Turn on the player, converter, and TV.
- Select the TV HDMI input connected to the converter.
- Insert the DVD and press Play.
These converters may advertise 720p or 1080p output, but that is upscaling. The original DVD remains a standard-definition source; the converter does not add genuine detail. Product specifications and direction warnings are illustrated by this RCA-to-HDMI converter example.

Work through these checks in order, starting with the most common cause:

- Check direction. The cable must run from the player’s OUT to the TV or converter’s IN.
- Reseat the cables. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends. Try another cable if available.
- Check the input type. A yellow composite cable normally cannot use a component red, blue, or green input.
- Confirm playback. The player’s power light does not prove that a disc is playing. Check that the disc loads and that the player display shows playback activity.
- Power the converter. If you are using RCA-to-HDMI conversion, connect its required USB or wall power.
- Check for a required TV adapter. Some TVs need a model-specific analog breakout cable.
- Try a video-output reset. Some players can reset to a low-resolution output by holding STOP for more than 10 seconds, but this is model-specific. Use the player’s manual rather than assuming the procedure applies.
- Consider compatibility. Imported equipment may use NTSC or PAL differently, and some intermediate analog-to-digital paths can fail because of copy-protection encoding.
Sound but no picture
Check the yellow video cable, the selected TV input, and whether the converter is connected backward. With component, verify all three video cables and their labels. An unsupported output resolution or a required proprietary TV adapter can also cause a blank picture.

Picture but no sound
With composite or component, check the white and red audio cables and their input labels. Component users often connect the three video cables but forget that audio is separate. Also check that the TV is not muted or routing sound to an external audio system. DVI-based connections may require separate audio as well.
Black-and-white picture or strange colors
Likely causes include a yellow composite cable connected to a component input, component cables connected in the wrong order, an NTSC/PAL mismatch, an incorrect TV input mode, or a damaged cable. Never rely on connector color alone; follow the labels and the TV manual.
Common questions
Can I connect the DVD player through the cable or antenna socket?
Not directly. The antenna connection is not a substitute for HDMI, composite, or another compatible audio/video input.
Does the TV need cable service or an antenna?
No. The TV needs power, a working connection from the DVD player, and the correct external input selected.
Can I connect the DVD player to a soundbar?
Usually, video goes to the TV and audio goes to the soundbar only when the soundbar supports the player’s output and the TV/audio system is configured accordingly. For the basic setup, connect the player to the TV first.
When replacing the player is better
Adapters are reasonable when the DVD player works and you occasionally need it. Replacement may be simpler if the player is unreliable, lacks every compatible connection, needs several adapters, or you want a newer player with HDMI. Do not buy a converter merely because it advertises “1080p” if the TV already has a working composite input; direct composite connection avoids an extra powered box.
