The support method, curtain weight, finished dimensions, operating system, fabric care and available clearance all affect the design. Because overhead loads and fire-safety systems are venue-specific, have the installation reviewed by qualified technical staff rather than relying on a generic fixing schedule.
Choose stage track and compatible runners
Stage drapes are often heavier and operated differently from household curtains. An archived Strand Electric and Engineering Co. stage-planning text distinguishes stage track from domestic rail, describing stage track as silent-running and domestic rail as unsuitable for curtains of likely stage weight. That is historical guidance, not a current engineering specification, but it makes the practical point: select track designed for theatrical use.
In studio guidance, Theatrecrafts describes heavy-duty metal tab track with plastic wheeled runners attached to the curtain top. The full system must be compatible: check the track, runners, hooks or attachment method, curtain weight, and intended operation together. A component that fits physically is not necessarily suitable for the complete installation.
Decide how the track will be supported and operated
Track may be bracket-mounted or suspended, depending on the venue, track design and curtain arrangement. The archived Strand text describes both approaches and mentions hauling rope, cable or winch operation. These are examples, not a universal recommendation or installation plan.

The building structure, curtain mass and selected track determine what support is appropriate. The available guidance does not establish safe fasteners, support spacing, load calculations or a fixing schedule. Have a qualified venue technician or rigging professional assess the structure and system using the relevant current manufacturer documentation. Do not improvise overhead attachments from general advice.
Manual and powered operation are alternatives to evaluate as part of the complete system. Choose based on the track and curtain design, the venue’s use and the appropriate technical review; the sources do not establish a universally preferable operating method.

Specify curtain dimensions and fullness
Fullness is the additional fabric built into a curtain relative to its finished width when drawn across the opening. Strand Electric and Engineering Co.’s 1962 archived planning text recommends 50% fullness for the draperies it describes; an archived W.J. Furse & Co. brochure also discusses approximately 50% fullness for its construction. These are historical, source-specific recommendations—not a current standard or a rule for every fabric, track or desired appearance.
Ask the drapery supplier to state the finished dimensions and fullness for the intended track, fabric and use. Agree how the curtain should look when closed and how it gathers when open, and make sure the specification corresponds to the opening and operating arrangement.

Check flame performance and care
Do not assume that a curtain’s fire-retardant treatment remains effective indefinitely. Theatrecrafts distinguishes durable flame-retardant fabric, which it says can retain performance after washing; non-durable flame-retardant fabric, which may need re-treatment after washing; and inherently flame-retardant fabric. Confirm the actual fabric category and obtain available documentation rather than inferring its status from appearance or age.
An archived Furse brochure warns that flameproofing does not last indefinitely, that cleaning can affect treatment, and gives a two-to-three-year reprocessing interval. This is historical supplier guidance, not a universal current maintenance interval. Follow the fabric maker’s current care information and the venue’s requirements. If the status of older tabs is uncertain, Theatrecrafts advises checking with the fire brigade; also consult the venue’s fire officer or relevant authority about current local requirements.

Plan clearance and performer movement
Allow enough space for the curtain to operate and for the intended backstage movement. Theatrecrafts suggests a 1.5 m gap between a studio’s back wall and tab track as one possible arrangement for storage and performer crossover. It is a studio design suggestion, not a standard dimension: measure the venue and plan around the actual storage, access and movement needs.
Where performers need to pass through tabs, a second curtain may help conceal a bare wall, according to Theatrecrafts. Consider sightlines and how the space appears during transitions when deciding whether that arrangement suits the production.

Keep a fire curtain separate from ordinary stage drapes
A safety curtain—also called a fire curtain in the US—is a distinct mechanical separation between the auditorium and stage or back-of-house. Ordinary stage drapes do not provide that function. Theatrecrafts notes that a safety-curtain arrangement can also affect track placement: the archived Strand text says the main tabs in the arrangement it describes cannot be fixed to the proscenium wall and must be suspended.
Installation, testing and maintenance of a safety curtain require venue-specific competent professionals and coordination with the local fire officer or safety team. Establish the appropriate schedule with them; do not apply general advice about ordinary tabs or assume a universal legal interval.
