How Reality TV Shows Are Created: From Pitch to Finished Episode

Reality shows move from a developed format and commission through casting, planning, filming, and editing. The exact workflow depends on the show’s format and production needs.

Reality TV shows are created through a sequence of development, commissioning, casting, production planning, filming, and editing. A production company shapes a premise into a format, pitches it to a broadcaster or platform, and—if the show is approved—builds a team to record and turn much more material than viewers will see into episodes. How much producers shape events, and what the filming and editing require, depends on the format.

How does a reality show get from an idea to a commission?

A production company develops a premise and a repeatable format: the basic structure that can generate episodes. In the UK process described by ScreenSkills’ overview of unscripted television, development teams prepare a written treatment and a short “sizzle” tape to pitch to commissioners. A commissioner may support further development or a pilot before deciding whether to greenlight the program.

After a show is commissioned, the broadcaster and production company may agree an editorial specification covering matters such as content, style, episode duration, and delivery dates. This is an example of UK industry practice, not a universal contract or commissioning process; terminology and stages vary between countries, broadcasters, and platforms.

How are reality-show participants selected?

Casting is both recruitment and editorial work. Casting producers consider the program’s format, intended audience, channel, and transmission context, then look for potential contributors through routes such as applications, agencies, existing contacts, and community groups. They interview candidates and prepare short recorded samples and written research briefs for review by the series producer and, where relevant, the commissioner.

ScreenSkills’ casting producer role profile also describes data protection and contributor care as part of the work, including contact before, during, and after filming. It outlines the responsibilities of the role; it does not establish one mandatory casting procedure used by every production.

What happens before filming starts?

Once the production is moving forward, managers coordinate the people, places, budget, and practical requirements of the shoot. The division of labor depends on the production’s size, but the work can include hiring crew, scheduling, arranging locations and equipment, handling payments and permits, and securing releases and clearances for material such as music or archive footage.

In ScreenSkills’ UK account of unscripted production roles, line producers oversee major budgets and logistics, while production managers handle much of the day-to-day operation, including call sheets and clearances. Those job boundaries are not identical on every show.

How are reality shows filmed?

Filming follows the needs of the format. A production might record people in their everyday environment, a competition with planned rounds, interviews, or activity on a studio set. Field producers work with contributors and directors during shoots; crews capture the scenes and other material the program needs. Some story moments are difficult to predict in advance, so a production may record extensive coverage to give the editorial team options. That does not mean every show films every participant continuously or in the same way.

Producer involvement also varies. A format may require producers to arrange challenges, interviews, or particular situations, while other material follows contributors’ activities more observationally. The available production accounts support a range of approaches, not a blanket claim that reality shows are either wholly spontaneous or scripted.

How do editors turn the footage into an episode?

Story producers and editors review the recorded material, identify usable scenes, and arrange them into a coherent episode arc. They decide which moments to include, how scenes connect, and what information viewers need. Sound, graphics, and other finishing work can also help make the program clear and watchable. The finished episode is therefore an editorial construction from recorded material, not a live or unfiltered record.

Henry Morillo, an unscripted story producer interviewed by NCTA in 2018, described the process as assembling a puzzle: “We don’t write the scripts, obviously. But using the footage as our puzzle pieces, we put the puzzle together of what the story is going to be. It’s sort of like writing, except the words are already there and you’re deciding how to best use them to tell the story.”

Morillo gave a specific example from his work on Dance Moms: five days of filming at eight hours a day were edited into one 42-minute episode. That is his account of one show and episode, not a typical or industry-wide filming ratio. As he also noted, production is collaborative: “It’s always a team effort, in every production, no matter what show it is, unscripted or scripted.”

Why does the production process differ between shows?

Format, scale, and technology change what a production has to plan and what post-production must accomplish. A location-based series, a studio competition, and a show that combines live performers with digital characters may all be described as reality or unscripted television, but they do not share one technical workflow.

Dance Monsters: performance capture and a live stage

Netflix Tudum’s 2022 account of Dance Monsters describes dancers performing on a motion-capture stage while a separate live stage hosted the audience and judges. Camera tracking and real-time rendering connected the performances to computer-generated characters. The account reports 73 motion-capture cameras in that show’s setup; that figure describes this production, not ordinary reality-TV equipment.

The Real World: a historical pilot and editing timeline

In a Television Academy interview, The Real World producer Jonathan Murray recalled that after a pilot shot over Memorial Day weekend in 1991, the team spent “about four months editing together two half-hour episodes.” This is a historical account of that pilot, not a current production schedule or a general estimate for reality television.
