You can watch Xumo without a traditional cable box or cable subscription. The simplest route is Xumo Play, a free, ad-supported streaming service you can open on a compatible smart TV, streaming device, phone, tablet, or computer. You need an internet connection, but not a TV package. If your television lacks streaming apps, an optional Xumo Stream Box connects to it by HDMI.
First, know which Xumo you mean
“Xumo” can refer to a free streaming service, an external streaming device, or a smart-TV platform. They are related, but they are not interchangeable:

If you only want free shows and channels, start with Xumo Play. You do not need to buy Xumo hardware just to use the service.
The easiest and cheapest option: Xumo Play
Xumo Play is free and supported by advertising. Xumo says the service itself requires no subscription, account, login, or credit card. It offers hundreds of live channels and on-demand titles, though the lineup and catalogue can change. See Xumo’s payment FAQ and account FAQ.

To watch, use whichever compatible device you already have:
- Smart TV: Open the television’s app store and search for “Xumo Play.” Supported brands include Hisense, Samsung, Sony, and VIZIO, but availability depends on model, software, and region.
- Streaming device: Look for the app on supported Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, or Chromecast devices.
- Computer: Open play.xumo.com in a browser.
- Phone or tablet: Use a supported iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
App-store names and menus vary by manufacturer. If Xumo Play does not appear, check the device’s model and software against Xumo’s current supported-device list. An unsupported TV does not necessarily mean you need a new television: a compatible streaming stick or box can add the app.

Xumo Play is internet streaming, not over-the-air television. You need broadband or another working internet connection; there is no cable-TV requirement. Xumo lists availability in the United States, with limited availability in Canada and the United Kingdom; access elsewhere is restricted. Check the geographic availability details if you are outside the United States.

A Stream Box is optional. It may be useful if you have an older television with an available HDMI input and want a dedicated remote, voice search, preloaded apps, and a more unified home screen. It does not turn the TV into a cable subscription, and it still needs internet. Xumo describes the device and its features on the Stream Box product page.

Before setting one up, you need an HDMI-equipped TV, the supplied power adapter, and Wi-Fi credentials or an Ethernet connection. A smart TV is not required. To get started:
- Connect the Stream Box to an available HDMI port on the television.
- Connect the supplied power adapter to the box and a wall outlet.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input you used, with the TV remote’s Input or Source control.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to pair the Stream Box remote.
- Connect the box to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Follow the activation instructions on screen, such as scanning the QR code or visiting the displayed activation page. Use official Xumo instructions and support links.
- Create or sign in to a Xumo account if prompted. When asked for a TV provider, select Xumo Play if you do not have a compatible provider service.
- Open Xumo Play to watch its free programming.
Account and subscription are different things. Xumo Play itself does not require an account. A purchased or provider-issued Stream Box generally does require device registration. Xumo’s Stream Box account guidance describes this distinction and provider-specific sign-in. Xfinity customers may use Xfinity credentials, and Spectrum customers may be offered Spectrum sign-in during activation.

What is free—and what is not
Xumo Play’s own programming is free with ads. Other apps available on Xumo devices may also offer free, ad-supported viewing—for example, Tubi, Pluto TV, and iHeartRadio—but catalogues and availability can change. A Stream Box can also host paid services, but having the device does not pay for them.
- Premium apps: Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Peacock, and similar services require their own subscriptions or eligible promotions.
- Provider TV apps: Apps such as Xfinity Stream or Spectrum TV depend on the provider, plan, location, and correct provider credentials. The Stream Box does not unlock channels your plan does not include.
- Cable networks and sports: Some may require a TV-provider login or a separate streaming subscription. Xumo Play is not a full replacement for every cable lineup.
The Stream Box’s central live-TV guide currently integrates Xumo Play, Spectrum TV, and Xfinity Stream. Some other services can be opened in their own apps but may not appear in that main guide; Xumo’s setup and guide guidance explains the current scope. App availability and guide integration can change.

Will Xumo give you local channels?
Do not assume Xumo Play includes your local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, or PBS affiliate. Xumo Play may offer local-news feeds or programming, but that is not necessarily the same as receiving your local broadcast station. Availability depends on the market and content rights.
If local broadcast channels are the priority, an antenna may be the least expensive solution. Xumo TV models can use an antenna for over-the-air reception; consult the Xumo TV information and the TV’s instructions. An antenna complements Xumo Play: it can bring in broadcast channels, while Xumo Play streams internet content. Some live-TV apps also carry local stations, but their channel availability depends on subscription and location.
Quick troubleshooting
The TV says “No signal”
- Check that the Stream Box is powered and the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- Use the TV’s Input or Source button to select the HDMI port the box uses; try another HDMI port if needed.
- Unplug and reconnect the Stream Box’s power adapter, using the supplied adapter.
The Stream Box will not connect or activate
Confirm the Wi-Fi password and that the network is working on another device. If activation asks for an account, remember that box registration is separate from the no-account requirement for Xumo Play itself. Follow the QR-code or activation instructions shown on the screen, and use official Xumo support rather than an unofficial activation site.

Video buffers or stops
Restart the Stream Box and router, reduce distance or obstacles between the box and router, and try Ethernet if practical. Test another streaming app: if it also buffers, the problem may be the home network; if only one app does, it may be app- or service-specific. Household network congestion can also affect playback.
An app is missing or the guide omits a service
Check whether the app supports your specific device and region. A service may work in its own app without appearing in the Stream Box’s unified live guide. If the TV does not support Xumo Play, use a supported streaming device, phone, tablet, or computer instead.

- You already own a compatible smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, or Google TV device: Install Xumo Play and avoid buying another device.
- You have an HDMI TV but no streaming device: Consider a Xumo Stream Box or another supported streaming device. Compare the interface and apps you want before purchasing.
- You mainly want free local broadcast stations: Check antenna reception in your area and consider an antenna; Xumo Play alone may not carry your local affiliates.
- You want premium channels, a particular sports package, or your former cable lineup: Check the relevant app’s subscription and provider requirements. Xumo hardware alone does not include those channels.
