You can watch local broadcast TV and many cable-like live channels for $0 per month, but there is no legal way to unlock every paid cable network for free. For most U.S. households, the practical setup is an antenna for local stations plus one or two free, ad-supported streaming apps for movies, news, classic TV, and other scheduled channels.
What “free cable TV” actually means
The phrase usually describes programming that feels like cable—channels you can browse and watch live—rather than the actual paid cable networks in a subscription package. The FCC distinguishes antenna-received broadcast TV from subscription TV providers and describes services such as Pluto TV and Tubi as offering internet-delivered linear channels at no cost (FCC, 2026).

A FAST channel may use a network’s library or a themed schedule; it is not necessarily the full live feed of a similarly named paid network. “Free” also generally means advertising-supported. Some services ask for an account, and channel availability can depend on location, device, and licensing.

Provider channel counts are snapshots, not permanent specifications. For example, Tubi’s U.S. live-channel page lists 262 unique channels and warns availability varies by geography and may change (Tubi channel information). Check the service on your own device for the current lineup.

Get local channels with an antenna
Depending on your market, an antenna may receive ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, CW, MyNetworkTV, Telemundo, Univision, independent stations, and digital subchannels. The station mix is local, not guaranteed nationwide. Reception depends on distance, terrain, buildings, transmitter power, antenna type, and placement. An antenna is a one-time equipment expense; you do not need internet for the broadcast signal.
Choose and connect an antenna
- Check which stations are predicted for your address using a location-based reception tool such as AntennaWeb.
- Choose an indoor antenna for strong nearby signals. Consider an attic or outdoor antenna if signals are weak or obstructed. An amplifier can help in some setups, but it cannot compensate for poor placement and may overload a strong signal.
- Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s ANT/CABLE IN port. A built-in digital tuner is normally enough; an older analog-only TV may need an external digital tuner or converter.
- Open the TV’s broadcast or channel settings, choose Antenna, Air, or Broadcast rather than Cable, then select Auto Scan, Channel Search, or the equivalent.
- Save the scan results. If a station is missing, adjust the antenna’s position and scan again.
On a Roku TV, Roku’s instructions are to connect an HDTV antenna to the TV’s antenna input and scan for channels; internet is used for Roku TV’s live-TV features and guide integration, not to receive the antenna signal (Roku antenna setup).

Fix common reception problems
- Fewer channels than an antenna’s advertised range suggests: Range claims are not a reception prediction. Use your address and actual signal conditions to guide antenna choice.
- Weak indoor reception: Move the antenna higher or near a window, away from the TV and metal objects.
- One network is missing: Stations may transmit from different directions. Repositioning or a multidirectional antenna may help.
- Picture breaks up or pixelates: Check the coaxial cable and connections, try another antenna position, and assess whether an amplifier is causing overload.
- Rental or apartment constraints: Check building rules before installing equipment outside. The rules can depend on the installation and property; this guide does not determine whether a particular restriction is lawful.
Choose a free streaming service by what you watch
Pluto TV for channel surfing
Pluto TV combines free live channels with on-demand movies and shows. Its themed schedules can suit viewers who want to browse rather than choose a specific episode. Channel lineups change, so treat the service’s current guide as the reliable list.

Tubi is free and ad-supported; the company says no subscription or credit card is required (Tubi service information). Its selection includes on-demand titles and live channels. Tubi also lists national and selected local news streams, with availability varying by market and device (Tubi live-news information).

The Roku Channel for Roku households
The Roku Channel offers free streaming channels and on-demand content. Roku TVs can combine streaming channels with antenna channels in the live-TV guide on supported devices; the guide and its features vary by product and region (Roku TV guide details).
Xumo Play for a large free lineup
Xumo Play is an ad-supported streaming service. Xumo describes it as having 350-plus channels and 15,000 on-demand titles, with no subscription or login required on its service page. Those are provider-reported figures and the lineup may change. You do not need to buy Xumo hardware if the service is available on a device you already own.

Official network and news streams
Broadcasters and news organizations may offer free apps, websites, or official YouTube channels. These can be useful for specific news or selected programs, but access to a stream does not imply access to a station’s complete live schedule. Tubi’s live-news materials, for example, describe national outlets and selected local stations rather than a universal local-channel feed.

Build a free setup around your household
- Local news, weather, and network sports: Start with an antenna; add a FAST app for extra news and entertainment.
- Movies and older TV: Try Tubi for on-demand viewing and Pluto TV for scheduled themed channels.
- News viewers: Combine antenna reception for local affiliates with a FAST service’s national and available local news streams.
- Sports viewers: Use an antenna for games carried by local broadcast stations, then check official services for specific free events. A channel labeled “sports” may provide highlights or studio coverage rather than a full league schedule.
- Samsung owners: Check whether Samsung TV Plus is already available on your compatible TV or device before buying anything.
- Roku TV owners: Use the supported live-TV guide to organize antenna channels and free streaming channels together.
- Viewers without a smart TV: An existing computer or phone can stream to a screen where supported. Otherwise, a compatible streaming stick or box may be needed; that hardware has an upfront cost, and compatibility depends on the TV’s inputs.
- No internet service: Use an antenna. FAST services require internet.
Install and organize the apps
- Connect your smart TV or streaming device to the internet.
- Open its app store and search for the official app, such as Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel, or Xumo Play. Confirm the publisher before installing.
- Install the app. Create an account only if the service requires it or you want features such as favorites; a free account is not the same as a paid subscription.
- Open the app’s Live TV, Guide, or Channels area. Browse its current lineup and save useful channels to favorites if the app supports it.
- Install one or two services that fit your viewing habits rather than filling the device with apps you will not use.
- If you have an antenna, scan broadcast channels separately in the TV’s channel settings. On supported Roku TVs, the live-TV guide can include both antenna and streaming channels.
Roku’s support instructions for its platform describe opening the Streaming Store, choosing a free app, and selecting Add app (Roku free-TV app instructions).
What you will not get free
A legal free service does not generally provide the full paid feeds of ESPN, HBO, CNN, Disney Channel, or an entire cable package. A free channel with a similar brand, a news stream, or a highlights feed is not necessarily the subscription network. If you specifically need a paid channel, full-season sports coverage, cloud DVR, or a broader live-network package, you may need a paid service. A free trial or introductory offer is temporary and should not be mistaken for a permanent free option.
Sports rights are especially event- and location-dependent. Antenna TV can carry sports shown by local broadcast stations, while FAST services may have sports news, replays, niche coverage, or selected live events. Tubi’s 2026 World Cup information, for example, describes selected matches as free, not the full tournament (Tubi event availability).
How to judge a “free IPTV” offer
IPTV simply describes television delivered over internet protocol; the label alone does not establish whether a service is authorized. Prefer recognizable services in official app stores and official broadcaster or platform websites. Be cautious when an offer claims to include every premium channel without a clear rights holder, pushes an unknown APK or browser extension, uses aggressive redirects or fake security warnings, asks for unusual payment, or promotes a “fully loaded” box. A VPN does not make an unauthorized stream legitimate or grant rights to bypass geographic restrictions.

- Video buffers: Confirm the device is online, restart the app, and check whether other internet services work. If only one app has trouble, check that service’s official status or support information.

- The app asks you to sign in: A free service may request an optional or feature-specific account. Tubi says its general service needs no credit card; some event features may require a free account and sign-in.
- A local channel is unavailable online: Try an antenna for the station’s broadcast signal, or check the station’s official app for the specific stream it offers.
- Captions or audio are missing: Check the player’s audio and caption menus, then the TV’s accessibility settings. Options differ by app and program.
