The practical solution depends on why Netflix is blocking you: update the Household if the home changed or Netflix selected the wrong network, use temporary travel verification when you are away briefly, or use an Extra Member slot or separate account when someone permanently lives elsewhere.
What the Netflix Household rule actually means
Netflix defines a Household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account holder watches Netflix. The account is intended for people who live in that household—not for unlimited sharing between separate homes.
That does not mean you can use Netflix only inside your house. People who live in the household can normally watch while traveling, staying in a hotel, visiting family, or using a phone or laptop away from home. Netflix may simply ask the device to verify that it is associated with the account.
When somebody permanently lives at another address, Netflix’s supported choices are to add that person as an Extra Member, where the account and plan are eligible, or for that person to create a separate account.

Choose the fix that matches your situation
| Situation | What to do | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your household moved or Netflix picked the wrong home network | Update Netflix Household from a TV connected to the household’s main internet connection. | Do not repeatedly update the Household from hotels, friends’ homes, or a second residence. |
| You are temporarily traveling | Choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and enter the verification code sent to the account owner. | Do not permanently change the Household to the hotel or rental network. |
| A roommate, partner, or relative permanently lives elsewhere | Use an Extra Member slot if available, or create a separate account. | Do not treat a shared password as a permanent solution. |
| An unknown device may still be signed in | Review Netflix’s access-and-devices list, sign out unfamiliar devices, and change the password if necessary. | Do not give your password or payment details to a person offering a “bypass.” |
If you genuinely moved or Netflix selected the wrong home network
Update the Household from the internet connection that the account’s household primarily uses. The exact wording can vary by TV and Netflix app version, but the usual path is:
- Open Netflix on a television connected to the preferred home Wi-Fi or wired internet connection.
- Open the Netflix help or settings menu.
- Select Manage Netflix Household.
- Choose Update Netflix Household.
- Confirm the update and follow the verification link sent to the account owner by email or text.
The verification link expires after 15 minutes, so complete the process promptly. If the household uses several Wi-Fi networks, Netflix may associate the Household with only one of them. Choose the connection used most consistently for Netflix at the main home.
Do not perform this procedure from a hotel, vacation rental, friend’s house, or another temporary location. That can associate the account with the wrong network and create more interruptions for the people at home.
If the Household update does not solve the warning
- Check that the television is actually connected to the intended home internet connection—not a guest network, mobile hotspot, mesh network with unusual routing, or nearby Wi-Fi.
- Restart the TV and home router, then sign back in to Netflix.
- Check Netflix’s list of recently active devices and sign out devices that are obsolete or unfamiliar.
- Repeat the Household update from the primary TV only after confirming the correct network.
- If Netflix still identifies the wrong location, contact Netflix Support rather than repeatedly changing the Household.
If you are traveling or temporarily away from home
Travel is different from moving the Household. On a blocked TV in a hotel, rental, friend’s home, or other temporary location, look for one of these options:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Select I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily when Netflix displays the Household message.
- Request the temporary verification code.
- Have the Netflix account owner retrieve the code from the account email address or phone number.
- Enter the code on the TV or streaming device.
Netflix says these temporary codes expire after 15 minutes. This is a short-term verification flow, not a way to turn a second home into the account’s permanent Household.

Netflix also recommends opening the Netflix app while connected to the Household’s home Wi-Fi at least once a month. That can reduce interruptions when household members use devices away from home, although Netflix’s requirements and prompts can change.
If someone permanently lives in another household
Option 1: Add an Extra Member
Where available, an account owner on an eligible Standard or Premium plan can purchase an Extra Member slot and invite someone who does not live in the same household. Eligibility depends on the country, plan, billing arrangement, and whether Netflix is included through a third party or package. Ad-supported plans do not support Extra Members according to Netflix’s current guidance.
The Extra Member generally receives a separate login and password and uses one profile. There are also limits on simultaneous device use. The account’s current Membership page is the authority for whether the option is available and what it costs; availability and pricing vary, so do not rely on an old price quoted elsewhere.
Netflix says the Extra Member must activate in the same country where the account owner created the account. An Extra Member who needs more than one profile, their own payment arrangement, or more simultaneous viewing capacity should create a separate Netflix account instead.
Option 2: Create a separate Netflix account
A separate account is the cleanest solution for a person who has moved out, maintains a different residence, or no longer wants to depend on another subscriber’s membership. It avoids repeated verification requests and makes the new account’s login, billing, and Household association independent.

A Netflix gift card can be used to pay toward a new or existing Netflix account. It can be purchased online or at retail locations and does not expire, according to Netflix’s gift-card guidance. However, it only pays for Netflix service—it does not unlock another household’s account or bypass Household checks. Check the card’s country and redemption restrictions before buying it.
Move your Netflix profile without starting from scratch
If you leave a shared account, Netflix’s Profile Transfer feature can preserve much of your viewing history and personalization. Depending on the available transfer path, you may be able to copy or move a profile to a new or existing account, or to an Extra Member slot.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Transferred information can include:
- Profile name and icon
- Recommendations
- Viewing history
- My List
- Game saves
- Settings and related profile data
Payment information is not transferred. A transfer to a new account copies the profile; it does not automatically erase the original. After confirming that the new account has the expected information, the original profile can be deleted if that is what you want.
Fixing a Household warning on a TV or streaming device
A warning does not always indicate deliberate account sharing. A television may be using a different network than expected, a device may have remained signed in at a former home or rental, or Netflix may need the device verified again.
For a device at the main home
- Confirm that the TV or streaming player is connected to the household’s primary internet connection.
- Open Netflix and sign in with the correct account.
- If prompted, confirm or update the Household from the primary TV.
- Restart the app or device after verification.
For a device away from home
Use I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and request the one-time code. Do not keep changing the Household every time you visit a different location.

For an unsupported or inconvenient TV
Netflix supports many smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, cable boxes, phones, tablets, and computers. If the TV lacks a supported Netflix app, a supported streaming stick or Netflix-compatible streaming player can provide a current way to watch. New hardware may solve an app or compatibility problem, but it does not change which household the account belongs to and does not authorize use from a separate residence.

Review devices and secure the account
If a former roommate, hotel television, rental device, or unknown user may still have access, review Netflix’s Manage Access and Devices page. Look for unfamiliar device types, locations, and recent activity, then sign out of individual devices or all devices as appropriate. Netflix notes that devices can take up to 48 hours to appear and that the list may not include every device, so an incomplete list is not proof that nobody else has access.
After removing unauthorized access:
- Change the Netflix password to a unique password that is not reused elsewhere.
- Sign out of devices you no longer control.
- Verify the account email address and phone number.
- Check the membership and payment details for changes you did not make.
- Do not share the new password with people who live outside the Household unless they are using an approved Extra Member arrangement.
Be especially cautious of messages or websites claiming to remove the Household restriction. Netflix warns about impersonation scams that request passwords, payment information, or gift-card codes. Netflix will not require you to give a stranger your login credentials to “activate” a bypass.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why VPNs and other online “workarounds” are a poor answer
There is no official Netflix support method that endorses a VPN, proxy, router configuration, IP-address change, device spoofing, or repeated Household reset as a permanent way to defeat the rule. Such methods can be unreliable, trigger additional location or playback problems, expose account credentials, or conflict with the service’s rules.
A VPN can also make Netflix treat the connection as unusual or affect which titles are available in a region. Even if a technical trick appears to work briefly, it does not convert a separate residence into the account’s Household or create an authorized Extra Member.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- At home? Connect the TV to the primary home network and use Manage Netflix Household → Update Netflix Household.
- Traveling? Choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and enter the short-lived code.
- Living elsewhere permanently? Check the account’s Membership page for Extra Member eligibility or create a separate account.
- Leaving a shared account? Use Profile Transfer where offered so recommendations and viewing history can follow you.
- Recognize every device? Review Manage Access and Devices, sign out unknown devices, and change the password.
- TV problem rather than account problem? Check app support and consider a supported streaming stick—but do not expect hardware to bypass the Household rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Netflix at two different homes?
Netflix allows people in the same Household to watch while away from home, including during travel. A person who permanently lives in another home generally needs an eligible Extra Member slot or a separate account.
How often can I change my Netflix Household?
Netflix’s supported guidance is to update the Household from the account’s primary home network when the household genuinely changes or Netflix has identified it incorrectly. Repeatedly changing it between homes or temporary locations is not a dependable workaround.
Does a VPN bypass the Netflix Household rule?
Netflix does not officially endorse a VPN or similar network trick as a permanent Household solution. It may be unreliable and can cause additional location, playback, or account-security problems.
Can I transfer my Netflix profile to my own account?
Netflix Profile Transfer can copy or move profile information to a new or existing account, or in some cases to an Extra Member slot. Recommendations, viewing history, My List, game saves, and settings may transfer, but payment information does not.
What should I do if I do not recognize a device on my Netflix account?
Review the account’s Manage Access and Devices page, sign out unfamiliar devices, change the Netflix password, and check your account and payment details. Netflix says device listings can take up to 48 hours to appear and may not show every device.
The Bottom Line
There is no dependable authorized bypass for Netflix’s Household rule. Update the Household only from the genuine primary home, use the temporary code when traveling, or separate the account with an eligible Extra Member arrangement or a new account. Profile Transfer can preserve personalization, while device hardware can fix compatibility—but neither changes Netflix’s account-sharing rules.
