Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room and FFmpeg’s connection and output logs. A timeout or “no data” points first to the destination, protocol, stream key, or VPS network path; a stream that reaches YouTube but has invalid settings calls for checking its codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, or audio. There is no universal fix—the observed error determines which change to make.
Capture the error before changing FFmpeg settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s health information and copy the full message. Also save the FFmpeg log lines around connection setup and output initialization. YouTube reports distinct problems for audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, and stream configuration, so the category is more useful than a generic “rejected” description. See YouTube’s live stream health messages and the Live API health-status categories.
Before sharing logs, remove the stream key and any other credentials. A stream key is a secret; do not paste it into a public forum or support request.
If YouTube does not detect the stream, check destination and protocol
Compare the ingest URL and key
Compare the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room with the destination configured in FFmpeg. Check for typos, stale keys, accidental whitespace, and a mismatch between the selected stream and the key being used. Treat the server URL and key as separate values when assembling the destination; never expose the key while troubleshooting.

Make sure RTMP and RTMPS are not being confused
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. A protocol mismatch can look like a server timeout rather than a clear rejection: YouTube’s RTMPS guide warns that a cleartext RTMP connection to an endpoint expecting RTMPS can time out without a sensible response. Check the current ingest instructions and pair the correct endpoint with the protocol your FFmpeg output uses: YouTube encoder settings and YouTube RTMPS guidance.
For orientation, FFmpeg documents a generic live FLV publication shape such as ffmpeg -re -i input -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. This is an illustration of FFmpeg’s protocol syntax, not a verified YouTube command; the actual endpoint, key, codec, and output settings must match your setup. See FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation. YouTube also supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest, but these choices have different capabilities and are not interchangeable in every workflow; consult its ingestion protocol comparison.

If data arrives but YouTube flags settings, inspect the output
Read FFmpeg’s output-stream summary and compare what it actually sends with the health details. YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Avoid changing unrelated flags or choosing a bitrate from a different resolution or frame rate.
Video codec, rate control, and bitrate
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Use the bitrate range for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate from the current YouTube encoder-settings table; it provides separate recommendations rather than one universal bitrate. For example, the current page lists these H.264 figures:

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are recommendations on YouTube’s current settings page; the page does not state a publication year. Do not assume the same numbers apply to AV1 or HEVC, or to another resolution and frame rate. Confirm the codec and encoder options supported by your FFmpeg build, and consider whether the VPS has enough CPU for the chosen encode. The cited guidance gives settings, not a performance benchmark for a particular VPS.
Frame rate and keyframes
Check that the configured frame rate matches the intended stream and the bitrate guidance you selected. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the health message reports a GOP problem, inspect the encoder’s GOP settings and check for open GOP: YouTube’s ingest documentation says open GOP is not supported. The exact FFmpeg option syntax depends on the encoder and build, so verify it for the encoder in use rather than copying an unrelated command.

Audio codec and sample rate
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio as supported options. If the health message points to audio, check the actual output codec and sample rate: the current guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. YouTube notes that 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC. See the encoder settings and audio recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If FFmpeg times out, separate network problems from media errors
If YouTube reports no incoming data and FFmpeg times out, first check that the destination host and port are reachable from the VPS and that the endpoint expects the protocol FFmpeg is using. A timeout alone does not establish whether the cause is a protocol mismatch, DNS, routing, firewall, or provider egress policy. The RTMPS documentation specifically describes a possible RTMP/RTMPS mismatch; it does not diagnose a particular VPS network.

When asking your VPS provider or another person for help, share the provider and region, the destination host and port with secrets removed, and the exact connection error. Do not change encoder settings to address an error that occurs before YouTube receives media. Conversely, if YouTube receives data and identifies invalid media settings, focus on the reported health category and FFmpeg’s output properties rather than changing VPS hardware or adding unrelated retry flags.
Retest one change at a time
- Record the initial state. Save the exact YouTube health message and relevant FFmpeg log lines, with the key redacted.
- Choose the matching branch. For no data or timeout, verify endpoint, protocol, key, and network reachability. For a media-health error, adjust only the named output property.
- Make one controlled change. Note what you changed so you can tell whether the health state responds; avoid changing several unrelated settings at once.
- Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the live event. Check the health message again after each controlled retest.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose and maintain a self-managed FFmpeg push from a VPS, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not replace this guide’s troubleshooting steps for an FFmpeg-to-YouTube ingest error.
