First compare the time of the drop with your encoder log and your router or ISP’s WAN-status records. Then troubleshoot the layer the evidence points to: OBS binding, Wi-Fi, upload capacity, local software, the ISP connection, or the YouTube ingest settings.
Confirm whether the public IP changed
A public-IP change can disconnect active network sessions: when the WAN address changes, the existing connection between an encoder and YouTube’s ingest service may be interrupted. NETGEAR describes this mechanism for TCP/UDP sessions, but its examples concern NETGEAR cloud products; they do not establish what caused a particular YouTube dropout or how OBS will reconnect.
- Record the exact time of each encoder disconnect or dropped-frame event. In OBS, use the log for the relevant session; note whether the symptom is a disconnect, dropped frames, or both.
- Check the router’s WAN or internet connection status and event log for an address change, WAN reconnect, or other outage at the same time. If those records are unavailable, ask your ISP whether it can confirm a WAN reset or public-address change.
- Compare the timestamps. A coincident WAN reset or address change is evidence worth escalating; without it, investigate other causes before treating the public IP as the culprit.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder or source problems from outbound internet issues. OBS likewise identifies several possible network causes in its dropped-frames troubleshooting guide (dated September 30, 2024). Neither a dropped stream nor dropped frames, on their own, identify a changing IP as the cause.
Fix the issue indicated by the evidence
Set OBS Bind to IP to Default
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and set Bind to IP to Default. OBS recommends this setting. Choosing a local network interface manually does not pin the public WAN address assigned by your ISP, so manual binding is not a way to prevent an ISP-side address change.

Test Ethernet if you stream over Wi-Fi
For a stream currently using Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking. This can help isolate wireless instability; it will not prevent or repair a confirmed router-to-ISP WAN reset. Treat a cable as a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.
Check upload capacity and bitrate
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Test outbound speed under conditions similar to your stream, then compare sustained upload capacity—not just a brief peak—with the total bitrate of your video and audio. YouTube’s network recommendations cover bandwidth, while its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking outbound connectivity when issues persist.

- If upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuates, reduce the encoder’s bitrate until the connection can sustain it with headroom. This can reduce quality and may help congestion-related dropped frames.
- If the stream repeatedly loses its network session at the same time as a WAN reset or IP change, lowering bitrate will not preserve that session. Escalate the WAN issue to your ISP.
For resolution-specific encoder guidance, consult YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, test before going live, and monitor stream health. Avoid treating a bitrate change as a fix for a connection break that the logs tie to the WAN.
Rule out VPNs and network-management software
OBS recommends checking whether a VPN, security software or firewall, or network “optimization” software is interfering with the stream. Test one change at a time; temporarily disable a VPN or suspected network-prioritizing feature only if safe to do so. Do not leave security protections disabled after the test. If a firewall is involved, use its supported configuration rather than broadly turning off protection.

Ask the ISP about a confirmed WAN interruption
If router or ISP records show a WAN reconnect or public-IP change at the encoder’s disconnect time, give the ISP those timestamps and ask what caused the event and whether it can improve connection stability. YouTube and OBS both direct users toward ISP escalation when outbound connectivity remains problematic after local troubleshooting. A static address or other ISP service is not a universal remedy; ask for a recommendation tied to the actual WAN diagnosis.
Verify the YouTube ingest URL and protocol only if symptoms point there
In YouTube Live Control Room, verify that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended live stream. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential and explains the encoder configuration in its stream settings guidance. Do not reset or replace a working key just because the network dropped.

If you use RTMPS and the encoder reports a server URL, protocol, or connection-timeout error, check the RTMPS URL, port, and encoder support against YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. Correcting an endpoint or protocol mismatch may fix an ingest-configuration error; it does not prevent a WAN session from breaking when the public IP changes.

Dynamic DNS (DDNS) updates a hostname’s DNS record when a public IP changes. TP-Link explains that function in its DDNS guide. It can help a service reached by hostname continue pointing to a changing address, but it does not keep an already-established outbound encoder connection to YouTube alive through a WAN change. For the same reason, DDNS is not a general stream-continuity fix, and a static IP should not be requested without a specific ISP or routing diagnosis.
