Next compare upload capacity with your stream’s total bitrate and test over Ethernet if you are using Wi-Fi. A disconnect alone does not show that ACT is at fault; this sequence helps narrow down where the interruption is happening.
1. Capture the error and the time it happened
Before changing settings, note the time of each drop and save the messages shown beside the stream-health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube checks the stream sent to it and displays errors with timestamps; those details can help distinguish a stream configuration problem from an interruption in the connection. See YouTube’s live-stream error reference.
Look for errors about bitrate, format, keyframes, audio, or video settings. Correct a reported configuration problem before assuming the internet connection failed. YouTube describes health errors as critical or moderate; use the specific message and timestamp rather than treating every warning as proof of a network outage.
2. Check the encoder and streaming computer
- Update your encoder software and check its preview, status messages, and error log.
- Watch the computer’s CPU load during the stream. If the encoder reports overload or the preview stutters, reduce the workload or adjust the output settings before testing the connection.
- If you record a local archive, check whether the file continues to grow through the time of the disconnect. A healthy local recording can help show that capture continued, though it does not by itself establish where the stream interruption occurred.
YouTube advises that if video and audio look healthy in the encoder but the stream still has a problem, test the outbound connection; if the test finds issues, contact your internet service provider. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.

Check encoder settings only when the evidence points there
If Live Control Room reports a format or bitrate error, compare your encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes for RTMP/RTMPS streaming. Its H.264 guidance lists these examples:

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not ACT upload-speed measurements or a guarantee that a connection can sustain them. YouTube’s settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the official table for your actual setup and revisit it when configuring a stream.

3. Measure upload capacity against total stream bitrate
Run an internet speed test that reports upload speed, preferably more than once and near the time disconnects usually happen. Compare the result with the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate—not your download speed or only the speed advertised for your plan. Results can vary with time and household usage.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a stream sending 10 Mbps needs at least 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity to retain that margin. Include a backup stream’s bitrate if you send one, and leave room for other people or devices using the connection. See YouTube’s bitrate guidance and network tips for live streaming.

- If upload capacity is close to the stream bitrate, lower the bitrate or resolution for a test stream and see whether the drops stop.
- Pause large uploads and other heavy network use during the test, where practical.
- Do not treat one speed-test result as proof of the sustained capacity available during every stream.
4. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet test
If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat a test stream using the same encoder settings. This comparison helps isolate Wi-Fi problems; it does not prove that ACT, the router, or the cable is responsible.
If Ethernet is stable while Wi-Fi drops, investigate signal coverage, interference, router placement and condition, and how many devices are connected. ACT’s home-networking guide identifies wiring condition, router distance and age, and connected-device count as factors that can affect home-network performance.

If both wired and wireless tests fail, note that result. If another internet connection works under similar conditions, record that too—but treat it as a comparison rather than a controlled guarantee, since the device, route, time, encoder, and network load may differ.

Ask affected viewers whether they share a connection and what error they see. YouTube says one viewer reporting an error is more likely to have a device or connection issue on that viewer’s side. Several viewers on the same internet connection may point to that shared network; reports from viewers on different connections may indicate a broadcaster-side or encoder issue. Compare those reports with your own Live Control Room health messages, following YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.

6. Contact ACT with useful evidence
If upload trouble persists on Ethernet, or both wired and Wi-Fi tests drop while another connection works under similar conditions, contact ACT and ask them to check for line problems or recurring disconnections. Provide:
- Dates and times of the stream drops.
- YouTube Live Control Room health messages and timestamps.
- Encoder error messages or relevant log details.
- Upload test results, including when you ran each test.
- Whether the computer was connected by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and whether another connection worked for comparison.
ACT’s customer-care page lists current support options; its home-networking guide also describes raising a request through its website or app. Contact channels and hours can change, so check the official page for the latest details. No single test guarantees a particular repair or outcome.
