Sign out or reinstall only later, because those steps can remove downloaded Apple Music content.
The message is usually an authentication or service-connectivity problem rather than a hardware fault. Apple does not define the wording as one universal error code, so the correct fix depends on whether sign-in fails everywhere or only on one device.
Key takeaways
- The “You Are Not Signed In to Apple Music” message usually means Apple Music cannot validate the current Apple Account or Media & Purchases session; it does not by itself prove a hardware fault.
- Test the same Apple Account at music.apple.com or on another supported device before changing account settings.
- Check Apple System Status, the internet connection, VPN or security software, automatic date and time, and software updates before signing out.
- Signing in with the wrong Apple Account can make a subscription, purchases, or Sync Library appear to be missing.
- Signing out of Media & Purchases can remove Apple-service downloads from the device, so treat that step as a later remedy.
- An expired Apple Music subscription removes access to catalog songs and catalog-based playlists and turns off Sync Library, while personally owned music remains available.
Why does Apple Music say “You Are Not Signed In” when you are signed in?
The message generally means Apple Music cannot validate the current Apple Account or media-services session. Apple does not document this wording as one universal error code, so the underlying cause may be an incorrect account, an expired subscription, a rejected password or verification code, a locked account, a service outage, a network problem, or a stale local session.
Start by separating an account-wide failure from a device-only failure. If the same account cannot sign in on the web and on multiple devices, investigate credentials, two-factor authentication, account recovery, account status, or the subscription. If the account works elsewhere, focus on the affected device, Apple Music app, connection, date and time, software version, or local sign-in session.

What should you check first?
Use these low-risk checks before repeatedly changing Apple Account settings or deleting the Apple Music app.
- Check Apple’s live service status. Open Apple System Status and look for Apple Music, Apple Music Subscriptions, Apple Account, and iCloud Account & Sign In. The status page changes over time, so a previous “available” snapshot cannot guarantee that the services are available when you are troubleshooting.
- Test a normal website. Confirm that the device can reach the internet, then try another Wi-Fi network or cellular data. Disable or test around a VPN, firewall, content filter, or third-party security app if one is interfering with Apple services.
- Check automatic date and time. Incorrect device time can interfere with secure connections. Set the date, time, and time zone automatically where your platform provides that option.
- Install available updates. Update the operating system and Apple Music app where applicable. Apple’s Apple-service connection guidance also recommends checking the network, VPN or security software, and device date and time.
- On an iPhone or iPad, check cellular access. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, make sure cellular data is enabled for Apple Music in Settings.
How can you tell whether the Apple Account itself is the problem?
Try signing in with the affected Apple Account at music.apple.com, in Apple Music on another supported device, or in another Apple-supported environment. Apple Music supports sign-in across Apple devices, Windows, Android, Apple TV, smart TVs, and other streaming devices; Apple’s Apple Account sign-in instructions list the relevant platform paths.
| What happens | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The account fails on the web and on several devices | Password, verification, locked account, account recovery, or subscription account | Complete account verification or recovery before troubleshooting one device |
| The account works on the web but not in Apple Music on one device | Local session, app, network, date/time, update, or security software | Work through the device checks, then refresh Media & Purchases if necessary |
| Apple Music works on another network but not the usual Wi-Fi | Router, DNS, VPN, firewall, filter, or network policy | Use the working network temporarily and investigate the failing network |
| The account signs in but music and subscription features are missing | Wrong Apple Account, expired subscription, or Family Sharing mismatch | Verify Media & Purchases and subscription ownership before signing out |
How do you verify the correct Apple Account?
Apple Account is Apple’s current name for Apple ID, although readers may still see “Apple ID” in older instructions. The account used for the device’s main iCloud functions is not necessarily the account that owns the Apple Music subscription or media purchases. On an iPhone or iPad, check Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases and confirm the email address or phone number.
Use the same Apple Account associated with the Apple Music subscription. Signing in with a different account can make purchased media, subscription access, or the expected library appear missing. Apple also warns that media purchased with a different Apple Account cannot simply be updated under the current account. Do not change accounts casually while trying to fix the error; first record which account owns the subscription and purchases.

What should you do if Apple Music rejects the password or verification code?
If Apple Music rejects the password, reset the Apple Account password through Apple’s account tools rather than repeatedly guessing. If two-factor authentication asks for a six-digit code, enter the code sent to a trusted Apple device or trusted phone number.
If the verification code is rejected, the trusted number is unavailable, or the account cannot be verified, follow Apple’s account-recovery instructions. Too many incorrect password or account-information attempts can automatically lock an Apple Account. Account recovery may take several days or longer, and Apple says Apple Support cannot shorten the waiting period.
How do you check whether an Apple Music subscription expired?
Confirm that the subscription is active and that the signed-in account is the subscriber account or belongs to the correct Family Sharing group. A subscription problem can resemble a sign-in problem because Apple Music may open while catalog access, playlists, or Sync Library is unavailable.
When an Apple Music subscription expires, Apple says catalog songs and playlists based on that catalog are no longer available, and Sync Library turns off. Music that was already personally owned and stored on the device before the subscription remains available. Apple’s subscription guidance explains this distinction.

What are the sign-in paths on each platform?
| Platform | Sign-in path |
|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Open Settings and select Apple Account to sign in, or use Apple Music when prompted. A nearby signed-in Apple device may offer an assisted sign-in option. |
| Mac | Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Sign in. |
| Windows | Open Apple Music and select Sign In at the bottom of the sidebar. |
| Android | Sign in through the Apple Music app or a web browser. |
| Apple TV | Open Settings > Users and Accounts, then add or select the user. |
| Smart TV or streaming device | Open the Apple Music app sidebar, choose Settings, and select Sign in. Some devices provide QR-code sign-in. |
Should you sign out of Media & Purchases?
Sign out of Media & Purchases only after confirming the account, service status, connection, subscription, and credentials. The step can refresh a stale media-services session, but it has a meaningful downside: Apple says signing in and out removes downloaded content from Apple services on the device, so offline Apple Music downloads may need to be restored.
On an iPhone or iPad, the documented path is Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > Sign Out. Afterward, return to Media & Purchases, choose Continue, and sign in with the same Apple Account. Do not use a different account as a test unless you understand which purchases and subscription belong to each account.
Can restarting or reinstalling Apple Music fix the error?
Yes, restarting the app or device can clear a temporary local failure, but reinstalling should be a later step rather than the first response. Close and reopen Apple Music, restart the device, and install updates first. If the app still will not open or respond, Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance includes deleting and redownloading the app.
Deleting Apple Music may remove data stored in the app. Do not assume that offline downloads will survive deletion; Apple’s warning is why reinstalling belongs after lower-risk checks and after you have confirmed that the account and subscription are correct.

What should you do when account recovery is required?
Use Apple’s password-reset, unlock, or account-recovery process when the account is locked, the password cannot be reset normally, or the trusted verification method is unavailable. Keep the recovery information consistent and avoid creating or switching to a new Apple Account merely to bypass the problem, because a new account will not inherit the old account’s purchases, subscription, or library relationship.
Account recovery can take several days or longer. Apple Support cannot shorten the account-recovery waiting period, so contact support for help understanding the available recovery options rather than expecting an immediate bypass.
When should you contact Apple Support?
Contact Apple Support when the account cannot authenticate on the web and across multiple devices, when the account is locked and ordinary recovery options are unavailable, or when Apple Music still fails after the service-status, network, date/time, update, subscription, and app checks.
Before contacting support, note the Apple Account email address or phone number, the affected platforms, whether sign-in works at music.apple.com, the exact message, the networks tested, the operating-system and app versions, and whether the subscription is active. Do not promise a particular resolution time; the remedy depends on whether the failure is caused by Apple’s service, the account, the subscription, or one device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apple Music say I’m not signed in when I am?
The “You Are Not Signed In to Apple Music” message usually means Apple Music cannot validate the current Apple Account or Media & Purchases session. Test the account at music.apple.com, then verify the account, subscription, network, date and time, and software before signing out.
How do I check which Apple Account Apple Music is using?
Check Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases on an iPhone or iPad and confirm that the displayed account owns the Apple Music subscription. A different Apple Account can make purchases, subscription access, and the expected library appear missing.
Will signing out of Media & Purchases delete my Apple Music downloads?
Do not make signing out the first step if offline downloads matter. Apple says signing out of Media & Purchases removes downloaded content from Apple services on the device, so downloads may need to be restored afterward.
What happens to Apple Music when the subscription expires?
An expired Apple Music subscription removes catalog songs and catalog-based playlists and turns off Sync Library. Personally owned music that was already on the device remains available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
The safest fix for the “You Are Not Signed In to Apple Music” error is to identify its scope before changing anything: test the account elsewhere, verify the correct Media & Purchases account and subscription, then check Apple services, the network, device time, and software. Sign out or reinstall only as a later step because downloaded content may be removed.
