The “This sound isn’t available on TikTok” message can mean a temporary app problem—or that TikTok cannot offer that sound to your account, location, or video. Restarting the app may help with a local glitch, but it won’t restore music removed for copyright or policy reasons, a deleted original sound, or a track restricted by region or commercial-use rules. First check whether the problem affects one video, one sound, or all TikTok audio.
First, find out what is affected
Try a different video that uses another sound, then search for the affected sound and open its sound page. If possible, check the same sound on another device or ask someone in the same location to test it. These comparisons help separate a phone or app issue from a restriction on the sound or post.

Messages such as “This sound isn’t available in your country or region,” “This sound isn’t available for commercial use,” “This sound isn’t available for videos over 60 seconds,” and “Your video was muted” point to different issues. Wording and available controls can vary by app version, account, and location; use the message shown in your app rather than assuming every warning means a technical fault. TikTok’s troubleshooting pages cover separate sound and region availability states.

Try these fixes for a temporary app problem
- Close and reopen TikTok. Fully close the app, reopen it, and try the sound again.
- Test your connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If you use a VPN, proxy, custom DNS filter, or ad-blocking profile, temporarily disable it to see whether it is interfering with loading. This is a connection test, not a way to bypass music restrictions.
- Update TikTok. Install any available update through your device’s official app store.
- Restart your phone. Then reopen TikTok and test more than one sound.
- Clear TikTok’s cache. The option may appear under Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Free up space, but menu names and locations can change. Use the current storage or cache control in your app.
- Sign out and back in. Make sure you know how to access your account before signing out.
- Compare on another device or account, if available. If the sound works elsewhere, the issue may be specific to your device or account; if it fails for everyone, a sound-level restriction is more plausible.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. First confirm your login method and protect any drafts you care about. Drafts may be stored locally, and uninstalling can remove them depending on device and app behavior.
These steps can help with loading failures or local app data. They cannot restore a sound TikTok or a rights holder has removed, a track unavailable in your region, or music that is not cleared for the way a post is being used. If TikTok videos are silent but other media plays normally, the microphone is unlikely to be the cause; compare another TikTok video and regular media playback.

If TikTok muted your own video
Check TikTok’s explanation before trying device fixes. Open the muted video and tap View details at the bottom. TikTok may identify a copyright claim, a Community Guidelines issue, or both. If the notice offers Appeal and you believe the decision is mistaken, follow the in-app instructions. If an appeal is not available or replacing the audio is the appropriate option, tap Change sound, choose an eligible track, adjust its trim or volume if needed, and tap Post to complete the change.
TikTok says videos using a sound remain muted while an appeal is under review. If the appeal succeeds, the sound may be restored across videos using it; if it is rejected, the sound remains muted. The available choices depend on the reason for removal. See TikTok’s instructions for a sound removed from your video.

If TikTok removed a sound you added yourself, open the video, tap the removal notice, and follow any appeal option shown. If you need to replace the audio, TikTok’s removed-sound guidance explains the process. Changing the sound applies to that video only, so check other posts that used the same sound and replace it separately where necessary.

TikTok confirms that it may remove sounds for intellectual-property or Community Guidelines violations, and videos using a removed sound may be muted. An original sound may also become inaccessible if its creator deletes the source post, makes it private, or disables reuse. A rights holder’s claim or a change in music licensing can affect availability too. The same symptom does not prove which cause applies: rely on TikTok’s notice when one is provided.

If TikTok or the rights holder has removed the sound, there may be nothing to repair on your phone. Appeal a removal you believe is mistaken when TikTok offers that option, replace the audio, or use music for which you have the necessary rights. Do not re-upload music to evade detection, import a track from another service without permission, or add an approved sound at zero volume to disguise unauthorized audio. An external edit does not grant music rights, and reposting may simply lead to another mute or removal.
If the warning mentions your country or region
Music rights can be limited by territory, so a sound may be available to one viewer but not another. If the warning explicitly mentions a country or region, treat it as an availability restriction rather than a cache problem. A VPN is not a dependable or appropriate way to override licensing, and changing account-region signals is not a guaranteed fix. Choose a sound TikTok makes available where you are.

If a friend can hear the sound, compare your locations and accounts as well as devices. Travel, account-region signals, and other account differences may contribute to inconsistent availability, but a single comparison cannot establish the exact cause.
If you are posting promotional or commercial content
A sound that is available for an ordinary post may not be cleared for a post promoting a brand, product, service, business, paid partnership, or campaign. TikTok recommends its Commercial Music Library for commercial content; licenses for music outside that library may not cover commercial use. Read TikTok’s commercial music guidance.

- Decide whether the video promotes a product, service, business, or partnership.
- Choose a track available in TikTok’s Commercial Music Library for the intended use, or obtain the necessary rights to use other music.
- Replace the unavailable sound. If TikTok presents a music-use confirmation and you rely on rights obtained independently, complete it accurately.
Changing account type does not itself grant music rights. The important question is whether the music is licensed for the post’s intended use.
If the video is too long
If TikTok specifically says the sound is unavailable for a video of your length, check the warning and the track’s usable duration in the current app. Try shortening the video or selecting a sound that supports the length you need. Do not rely on an old universal 60-second rule: video-length features and audio limits can change by version, account, and feature. A duration warning is different from a copyright or regional restriction.
If the problem persists, report it
If the sound works for other people in comparable circumstances but continues to fail after basic troubleshooting, report the issue through TikTok’s in-app Report a problem option. Include your username, the video link, the sound link or name, your device model, operating-system and TikTok app versions, your country or region, a screenshot or screen recording, and whether the issue affects one sound or all sounds. TikTok’s troubleshooting section provides routes for reporting problems and sound issues.

Stop troubleshooting the phone when TikTok’s notice identifies removal or a regional or commercial restriction. At that point, the practical options are an eligible appeal, a suitable replacement sound, or audio you are authorized to use.
App labels, sound availability, and video or audio limits can vary and change over time. Check the warning and controls shown in your current TikTok app.
