You can’t permanently turn off Netflix Household enforcement with a supported setting. If you’re at the account’s main home, connect to its preferred internet connection and update the Household. If you’re temporarily away, request a travel code. If you live elsewhere, use an eligible Extra Member slot or your own account.
What the Netflix Household restriction means
Messages such as “Your TV isn’t part of the Netflix Household for this account” mean Netflix couldn’t associate that device with the account’s designated household. Netflix defines a Household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. Its support information says network and internet-connection details can affect that association; it does not publish the full detection method. See Netflix’s Household guidance.

The message alone doesn’t mean the account is canceled, compromised, or over a device limit. Netflix says it does not limit the total number of devices that can be used on an account; the number of simultaneous streams depends on the membership plan. Netflix’s device guidance explains the distinction.

Fix the error on a TV at home
Use the account owner’s preferred or most-used home internet connection. If the TV is on a guest network or a different home connection, switch it before updating the Household.

- Connect the TV or streaming device to the preferred home internet connection.
- Open Netflix. From the home screen, press Back on most remotes, or Menu on Apple TV.
- Open Get Help or Settings, then select Manage Netflix Household.
- Select Update Netflix Household, then choose Send Email or, if offered, Send Text.
- Open the verification link sent to the account owner and select Yes, This Was Me, then Confirm Update.
- Wait for Netflix to refresh on the TV.
The verification link expires after 15 minutes. Menu labels and locations can vary by TV, app version, language, and interface layout. Follow Netflix’s current update instructions if your screen differs.
If “Manage Netflix Household” isn’t available
- Try another TV or supported streaming device on the preferred home connection.
- Update the Netflix app and the device software.
- Check the account’s recently active devices and sign out of unfamiliar ones.
- If needed, sign out of all devices and repeat the update from the intended home connection.
Netflix says an account that isn’t used on a TV or TV streaming device may not need a Household to be established. If no Household option appears on your device, consult Netflix’s Household help page.
Use Netflix temporarily while traveling
For a hotel, vacation rental, friend’s home, or other temporary location, use Netflix’s travel verification rather than changing the Household to that location. Use a profile that isn’t a Kids profile.

On a TV or TV streaming device
- Sign in and select I’m Traveling.
- Choose Send Email or Send Text.
- Ask the account owner to retrieve the four-digit code from the message.
- Enter the code on the TV and select Next.
On a phone or computer
- Select Watch Temporarily.
- Request a code by email or text using a non-Kids profile.
- Enter the four-digit code in the app or browser and select Submit Code, then Continue to Netflix.
Codes expire after 15 minutes, and Netflix may stop offering codes after a device reaches its request limit. Netflix recommends opening the app on the household’s Wi-Fi at least once a month when traveling or watching away from home. These are temporary-access steps, not a permanent arrangement for two homes. See Netflix’s temporary-access instructions and its account-sharing options.
If a travel code is missing, expired, or rejected
- Check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders; then select Send Again if available.
- Confirm the account owner’s email address or phone number is current, and ask the owner to retrieve the code directly. Without access to the account’s contact method, you may not be able to verify the device.
- Request a new code after expiry. If you enter the wrong code several times, Netflix may block the device for 24 hours. A device may also reach its daily request limit; Netflix does not promise unlimited requests.
- Use an account email or phone update only with the owner’s permission. Netflix notes that changing either contact detail affects other people using the account.
Treat a verification code like an account credential. Don’t share it with an unknown person or approve a request you don’t recognize. If the owner doesn’t recognize a request, review signed-in devices, sign out unfamiliar devices, and change the password. Apple TV may not show the same Troubleshoot this TV option as other devices; Netflix lists mobile-device check-in or updating the Household as supported alternatives. Fix the error on a phone, computer, or streaming device
For a phone or computer at home, connect it to the same Wi-Fi network used by a TV or streaming device associated with the Household, then restart the Netflix app or refresh the browser. If the message remains, update the Household from the home TV using the steps above. If there is no Household TV, follow Netflix’s device-verification or account-recovery options at its support page.

A legitimate home device can be misidentified when it uses guest Wi-Fi, another ISP or external IP address, or a different connection from the one associated with the Household. Multiple home networks, a router or ISP change, a recent login at a hotel or rental, an outdated app, or the wrong account being signed in can also be relevant. Netflix says that where a home has multiple Wi-Fi networks, it may associate only one with the Household. Update from the account owner’s preferred home connection—not from a temporary location. If you live outside the account’s Household
For someone who lives elsewhere, repeated travel codes or changing the Household are not a permanent sharing solution. The official options are an Extra Member slot, if the account qualifies, or a separate Netflix account. Eligibility varies by country, plan, and billing arrangement. Netflix says Extra Members are generally available with Standard and Premium plans in many countries, but not with ad-supported plans or some partner-billed packages. Check the account’s own options rather than assuming eligibility. Netflix’s sharing guidance has the current rules.

If Netflix is bundled through a mobile, broadband, cable, or other provider, the provider may determine available plans and pricing. Extra Members may require a secondary payment method, and changing packages can affect existing Extra Members. Check both Netflix’s account page and the provider’s terms; for one example, see Netflix’s Verizon package guidance.

Moving within the same country
Update the Household from the new primary home internet connection. In the United States and Canada, Netflix says billing information may also need to be updated to reflect the correct tax rate. See Netflix’s moving guidance.

Netflix generally directs members moving internationally to cancel their existing membership and sign up again in the new country. Prices, billing currency, payment methods, content availability, and some account settings may differ. Netflix says viewing activity is retained for 24 months after account closure so it can be available if the member rejoins. Check Netflix’s instructions for moving countries.

Why changing Wi-Fi or using a VPN isn’t a reliable fix
Switching randomly among Wi-Fi networks, hotspots, DNS services, or VPN endpoints does not establish that a device belongs to the account’s Household. Connecting to the actual home network can correct a legitimate association problem; updating the Household from the wrong network can make one worse.
A VPN may change the apparent network location, but it does not authorize someone who lives elsewhere or create an Extra Member relationship. It can also introduce separate playback, catalog, or verification problems. Netflix does not present VPN use as a Household remedy, so use its Household update, temporary travel verification, Extra Member, or separate-account options instead.

When to contact Netflix support
Contact Netflix through its Household error support page if the official steps fail, the account owner can’t access the email or phone used for verification, the Household was changed from the wrong location, or a verified device remains blocked. Contact the billing provider as well when the subscription comes through a package.
