Apple does not publicly define error -6753 as a diagnosis for one specific component. It has been reported during Apple TV setup and iPhone Quick Start, so the right fix depends on which screen shows it. Start with a restart, install available software updates, and retry on a different network; then use the workflow-specific steps below.
First, identify which setup failed
- Apple TV setup: The message appears on the TV while using an iPhone to configure Apple TV, or while Apple TV joins Wi-Fi.
- iPhone Quick Start: The message appears on a new iPhone while it is being set up beside an old iPhone or while transferring data.
- Apple TV recovery screen: The TV shows an iPhone next to an Apple TV. This calls for Apple’s recovery procedure, not another ordinary setup attempt.
Apple does not publish a public support definition that maps -6753 to a particular failed part. Treat it as a setup or device-to-device communication failure, not proof of a defective modem, corrupted backup, or failed Apple TV. A 2019 user report describes the code during iPhone Quick Start; older third-party coverage also reports it during Apple TV setup, but those reports do not establish an official diagnosis.
Fix -6753 during Apple TV setup
Check the iPhone setup requirements
Before trying automatic setup again, make sure the iPhone is updated, signed in to iCloud with the relevant Apple Account, and has two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain enabled. Turn on Bluetooth and connect to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use for Apple TV. These are Apple’s stated prerequisites for setting up Apple TV with an iPhone; see Apple’s setup guidance.
Restart both devices and retry
- Disconnect Apple TV from power, wait briefly, and reconnect it.
- Restart the iPhone and unlock it.
- When prompted, hold the iPhone close to Apple TV and follow the instructions on both screens.

Test another network
If setup fails on your home Wi-Fi, try a personal hotspot. That helps distinguish a home-network problem from a device or setup problem. Avoid networks that require a browser sign-in, such as many captive-portal guest networks, and business or school 802.1X networks unless they are specifically supported and configured. Apple recommends trying another Wi-Fi network when setup cannot get past a screen; its network guidance also addresses network limitations.
VPNs, DNS filters, parental controls, and third-party security software can interfere with local device discovery or Apple services. Temporarily disable them only as a test, then restore your protection. Apple lists VPN and third-party security software among possible causes of Home setup issues: Apple Home troubleshooting.

Set up Apple TV manually
If the iPhone-to-Apple TV handoff keeps failing, choose Set Up Manually on the Apple TV screen. Select the language and region, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in to your Apple Account with the on-screen keyboard or another supported input method. Complete the remaining settings as applicable. Manual setup bypasses the iPhone handoff; it does not establish that Apple TV is defective.

Reconnect Wi-Fi if Apple TV reaches Settings
If setup has progressed far enough to open Apple TV settings, go to Settings > Network, select the current Wi-Fi network, choose Forget Network, then select it again and enter its password. If Apple TV is connected by Ethernet, disconnect the cable when you need to configure Wi-Fi; Ethernet can change which network options appear. Fix -6753 during iPhone Quick Start
Retry the direct transfer
- Connect the old iPhone to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth.
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the old one.
- Follow the Quick Start prompt; enter the old iPhone’s passcode on the new iPhone if asked.
- Choose a transfer method and keep both devices close together and connected to power until the transfer finishes.
Restart both iPhones if the Quick Start prompt disappears, then try again. Apple lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a compatible existing device, and keeping both devices nearby and powered during direct transfer in its Quick Start instructions. Update both phones to the latest software available to them before retrying, if possible.
Switch transfer methods if wireless migration still fails
- Download from iCloud: Set up the new iPhone and allow apps and data to download in the background.
- Restore from an iCloud backup: Use this when the direct connection between the phones is unreliable and a suitable backup is available.
- Wired transfer: Consider this when wireless communication repeatedly fails and the phones and cable support the required connection.
Do not erase, trade in, or otherwise give up access to the old iPhone until you have checked the new one and confirmed that important photos, messages, contacts, authenticator data, and other needed content are available. Quick Start is not available in the normal way when the new device is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business; follow your organization’s deployment instructions instead.

If Apple TV displays an iPhone recovery image
For Apple TV HD or later running tvOS 17 or later, Apple’s recovery process requires an iPhone running iOS 17 or later. Unlock and update the iPhone, hold it close to Apple TV, and follow the Recover Apple TV instructions shown on the phone. Keep Apple TV connected to power while recovery completes. If it does not work, check the iPhone’s Wi-Fi; Apple specifically suggests trying 2.4 GHz instead of 5 GHz for this recovery scenario and avoiding captive-portal or 802.1X networks. When the network may be the cause
- Guest Wi-Fi or isolation: Guest networks or router settings that isolate devices can block local discovery between an iPhone and Apple TV. A hotspot test can help isolate this variable.
- Captive portals and 802.1X: A browser sign-in or enterprise authentication requirement can prevent ordinary setup from completing.
- VPNs and filters: Temporarily disable a VPN, DNS filter, or security tool only to test whether it is interfering; turn it back on afterward.
- Ethernet: If Wi-Fi configuration options are missing, disconnect Ethernet. Conversely, Ethernet may help complete an update or test whether Wi-Fi is responsible.
Do not assume 2.4 GHz is always required. Apple calls it out for the specific iPhone-based recovery situation above, not as a universal Apple TV setup requirement.
When to reset Apple TV or contact Apple
Try restart, another network, and manual setup before a factory reset. If Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD can reach its settings, open Settings > System > Reset. Reset returns the device to factory settings without requiring an internet connection. Reset and Update erases it and installs software updates, so it requires an internet connection. Keep Apple TV connected to power until the process finishes. A reset removes accounts and configuration and may not fix a network or account problem. Contact Apple Support if setup still fails on multiple networks and through the applicable manual or recovery path, or if Apple TV repeatedly fails after a reset. Persistent recovery or service symptoms warrant Apple’s assessment; the code alone does not establish a hardware fault. Exact menu wording can vary by software version and region.
