If Roku shows black bars, a cropped image, or a picture that is too small, the cause may be the video’s aspect ratio, your TV’s Picture size setting, Roku’s Display type, or a single streaming app. Start by checking whether the Roku Home screen is affected.
First, identify the symptom

The most important distinction is whether you have a Roku TV or an external Roku player/Streaming Stick. Roku TV has picture controls built into the television; an external Roku sends a signal to a separate TV, whose own remote may control the final picture shape.
Fastest fix for a Roku TV
- Play the affected movie, show, live-TV channel, or HDMI input.
- Press the Star/Options button on the Roku remote.
- Open Picture settings or Advanced picture settings.
- Choose Picture size.
- Set it to Auto first.
Depending on the manufacturer and model, other choices may include Normal, Direct, or 16:9. Try one of those if Auto does not produce the expected result. Use Zoom only if you accept losing part of the image, and avoid Stretch unless distortion is acceptable.
Roku TV picture settings can vary by brand, model, input, and picture mode. You may need to repeat the change for another input or mode. Roku’s Roku TV User Guide explains the model-specific behavior.

Fix a Roku player or Streaming Stick
- Press Home.
- Go to Settings > Display type. Some software versions may use slightly different wording.
- Select Automatic.
- If necessary, choose only a resolution and frame-rate combination your TV supports.
- Confirm Yes, I can see it when the test image appears.
Display type controls Roku’s output resolution and frame rate. It is not a universal aspect-ratio control, so changing it will not remove intentional black bars from a movie.
If the screen remains blank after selecting a display type, wait about 20 seconds. Roku says the player should revert to its previous setting. Details are available in Roku’s display-type instructions.
Black bars may be correct
A modern TV usually has a 16:9 shape, but films and older programs may be wider, narrower, or 4:3. Preserving the original aspect ratio can therefore leave black bars:
- Keep the original format: Shows the complete image without distortion, but may leave bars.
- Zoom: Removes some bars by cutting off the edges. Captions, sports scores, or scene details may disappear.
- Stretch: Fills more of the screen but changes the proportions of faces and objects.
There is no setting that can make every source fill the screen while also preserving the entire image and its correct proportions.
If the picture is cropped, zoomed, or too small
Use the TV manufacturer’s remote, especially when using an external Roku. Search the TV’s picture menus for Aspect ratio, Picture size, Screen size, Zoom, Wide, or Overscan. Return the setting to an option such as Auto, 16:9, Direct, Just Scan, Screen Fit, or 1:1, depending on the TV.

If the Roku Home screen is also cropped, the TV is more likely to be applying the wrong picture mode. If only one video is affected and the Home screen fits normally, the source format or app is more likely.
If only one app or show is affected
Test another title in the same app, then test a different app. If the Roku Home screen and other services display correctly:
- Highlight the app on the Home screen.
- Press Star.
- Select Check for updates.
- Restart the app or Roku device.
- If the problem continues, press Star again and choose Remove app or Remove channel, then reinstall it.
Also check whether the streaming service has reported an outage. Roku’s current guidance covers problems playing shows and movies and app troubleshooting.
If the screen is black or disappears
A completely blank screen is not usually a picture-size problem. Check the following in order:
- Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input used by Roku.
- Try another HDMI port.
- Connect the Roku directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing a receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or AVR.
- Reseat or replace the HDMI cable.
- Use the Roku-supplied power adapter where applicable. A low-power warning or flashing red light can indicate inadequate power.
- Test the Roku on another TV if one is available.
For 4K or HDR, use a TV input and intermediary equipment that support the required signal, plus a Premium High Speed HDMI or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Changing refresh rate can briefly cause a black flash during video-mode switching. Automatic detection is normally safer than forcing a mode, and some apps may not support automatic refresh-rate adjustment.

Restart and update Roku
System restart
Use Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. Some devices omit the Power submenu, in which case choose System restart directly. You can also unplug the Roku for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it. This is not a factory reset and should not erase your settings. See Roku’s system restart instructions.
Software update
Go to Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Roku devices normally check automatically, but a manual check helps after the device has been offline or after installing an app. See the Roku software-update guide.
When the TV, not Roku, is probably faulty
Suspect the television or its panel when the TV’s own menus are cropped, duplicated, or confined to part of the screen; multiple HDMI devices show the same defect; or the issue persists with another Roku and HDMI cable. Persistent vertical lines, half-screen images, severe flickering, color blocks, or backlight failure also point beyond a normal Roku setting.
For a Roku TV with no picture but sound, follow Roku’s power and display troubleshooting before considering a factory reset. A factory reset erases personalized information, Wi-Fi credentials, linked accounts, and input configuration, so it is a last resort. Roku’s Roku TV no-picture guidance explains the recovery options.

Should you buy new hardware?
Usually not for ordinary black bars, stretching, or zooming. First test Picture size, Display type, the TV input, the HDMI path, and the affected app. Consider a replacement Roku only after the device fails on another TV or with another cable. Consider a new TV only after the panel or TV inputs themselves appear faulty. A new HDMI cable is relevant mainly to unstable 4K/HDR or intermittent signal problems, not to intentional aspect-ratio bars.

Test another title and app. If the issue is isolated, update, restart, or reinstall that app rather than changing the entire Roku display mode.
