How to Fix OBS YouTube Stream Buffering on Tata Play Fiber

Find out whether OBS, Wi-Fi, YouTube settings, or viewer conditions are behind buffering—and follow a practical wired test and bitrate checklist.

First, check whether OBS is actually dropping frames. If its dropped-frame count rises or its connection status worsens, troubleshoot the computer-to-YouTube connection; if OBS stays stable while viewers buffer, investigate YouTube’s stream health, latency settings, and those viewers’ devices or networks. Tata Play Fiber is one possible part of the route, but its name alone does not establish an ISP-wide YouTube problem.

Tell sender-side drops from viewer buffering

OBS sends an encoded live feed to YouTube even when the video source is a prerecorded playlist. A prerecorded file does not bypass the network or ingest stage.

  • OBS dropped frames are increasing: This points to an unstable connection between OBS and YouTube’s ingest server, or a connection unable to sustain the selected bitrate. OBS Project says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Its connection troubleshooting guide attributes them to the connection between the computer and remote ingest server.
  • OBS has no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering: The outbound connection may be stable. Check YouTube’s stream-health warnings and latency setting, then ask which viewers, devices, and networks are affected. OBS’s viewer buffering guide distinguishes this symptom from sender-side drops.

Note the time of any OBS warning and compare it with YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages. This helps establish whether the two symptoms coincide.

Run a representative test over Ethernet

  1. Use the actual prerecorded segment, including its typical motion and audio, with the intended OBS scene or playlist setup, resolution, and frame rate. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health during the test; YouTube recommends testing under conditions that resemble the real event.
  2. Connect the streaming computer directly to the Tata Play Fiber router or ONT by Ethernet, then run an upload speed test. Repeat the test over Wi-Fi from the same computer and, if possible, at different times.
  3. Pause unnecessary downloads and other heavy household network use during the test. Tata Play Fiber notes that Wi-Fi performance can vary with distance, walls, interference, device capability, and the number of connected devices.
  4. If you need a cable, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical way to make this comparison. A wired test isolates Wi-Fi as a possible cause; it cannot guarantee a fix for congestion or problems farther along the ISP route.

OBS recommends wired streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable, and Tata Play Fiber also advises comparing LAN and Wi-Fi performance in its FAQ. A faster advertised download plan does not tell you the stable upload capacity available to OBS.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set OBS bitrate to fit stable upload

Use the wired test’s sustained upload capacity, not the plan’s advertised download speed, to choose the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate. This is YouTube’s current published guidance; its page does not show a publication year.

H.264 example from YouTube Recommended video bitrate Other relevant guidance
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps Use CBR; YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval.
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps Use CBR; YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval.

These are examples from YouTube’s encoder settings, not universal settings for every codec, resolution, or frame rate. Consult the live table for your stream format. For example, a 5 Mbps video bitrate needs more than 5 Mbps of available upload to preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, before accounting for audio and any other stream traffic.

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output and check the streaming encoder’s bitrate control. Use constant bitrate (CBR) where applicable, and choose a bitrate your wired connection can sustain with headroom.
  2. Open Settings > Video and select the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. If upload capacity varies or drops, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and repeat the representative test.
  3. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that control. Check that the output format matches YouTube’s requirements for the selected encoder.
  4. Start the stream and compare OBS’s dropped-frame counter with YouTube’s health indicator. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment affects the symptom.

YouTube’s recommended bitrate values and encoder requirements can change. Confirm the current guidance in its encoder settings page rather than treating these examples as a guarantee of stream quality.

Check YouTube ingest and viewer playback settings

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room while streaming and review the health indicator and any timestamped warnings. Compare their times with OBS connection changes.
  2. Verify the encoder format and keyframe configuration against YouTube’s encoder requirements. YouTube’s streaming tips also explain bandwidth and stream preparation.
  3. If OBS remains connected but viewers buffer, review the stream’s latency setting. YouTube warns that lower latency can mean more playback buffering; consider default or normal latency if the audience is experiencing interruptions. See YouTube live settings.
  4. Ask affected viewers whether the issue occurs on more than one device or network. If only particular viewers are affected and OBS shows no drops, their playback conditions are a more relevant lead than changing the creator’s ISP setup.

Check local software, router, and ISP conditions

  • Temporarily test without a VPN. If the symptom changes, investigate the VPN route rather than assuming the fiber connection itself is responsible.
  • Check whether firewall, security, or vendor network-boost software is deprioritizing OBS. Do not permanently disable security protections; use a controlled test and restore protections afterward.
  • Keep network drivers current and restart the router as Tata Play Fiber recommends. Repeat the wired test before concluding that a router restart resolved the issue.
  • Compare tests during quieter and busier periods, and with competing household devices paused versus active. This can reveal time-of-day congestion or local network load.
  • If wired tests at multiple times still show poor upload or OBS connection drops, contact Tata Play Fiber support with the test timestamps, wired and Wi-Fi results, and relevant OBS log and YouTube health messages. OBS likewise recommends contacting the ISP when its connection checks do not resolve persistent drops.

Tata Play Fiber’s citizens charter lists packet loss under 1% as a wireline service benchmark as of March 31, 2025. That is a provider benchmark, not a measurement of your line or a guarantee about the route to YouTube. See the Tata Play Fiber citizens charter.
