To build a school channel in OBS Studio, create a dedicated scene collection for its scenes and sources, then pair it with a separate profile for recording and video settings. Configure a deliberate recording path and a recoverable file format, then test the entire workflow. OBS can launch with a chosen collection and profile and begin recording, but those launch options alone do not provide automatic recovery after a crash, power loss, or full drive.
Understand what the scene collection saves
A scene collection holds the scenes and sources used in a production, including global audio sources. A profile holds most output-related settings. They are separate: switching to a school channel scene collection does not by itself configure recording resolution, output, or destination. OBS describes collections as a way to save and switch between scene-and-source arrangements; profiles store settings such as output and video configuration. OBS Scene Collections · OBS Profiles

Create a dedicated school channel collection
- In OBS, open Scene Collection and choose New (or the equivalent new-collection command in your installed version). Name it clearly, such as
School Channel – Recording. OBS’s collection controls are intended for switching among saved scene/source setups. OBS Scene Collections - Add only the scenes your channel needs. A practical starting point might be a holding/title scene, a program scene, an announcements or schedule scene, and a closing scene. These are examples to adapt, not a required OBS template.
- Add and label sources so another staff member can identify them: for example, school-approved images, text, video files, a microphone, or a capture device if the production actually uses one. In each scene, check source visibility and stacking order; a source higher in the list may appear in front of sources below it.
- Preview every scene and confirm that the intended content is visible. Check audio meters and confirm that the correct microphone or other audio source is active where needed. Avoid leaving an unintended live camera or desktop capture visible in a scene meant to show recorded programming.
Pair it with a recording profile
Create or select a profile for the school channel’s video and recording configuration. In OBS, use Profile to create or switch profiles, and Settings to configure the profile’s output and video options. Exact menu wording can vary by OBS version. Keep the collection and profile names recognizable and document which pair operators should use. Since the profile and collection are distinct, verify both are selected before recording. OBS Profiles
Set the recording destination and format
- Open Settings → Output, select the recording controls, and set the Recording Path to a folder on the intended storage volume. Confirm that the account running OBS can write to that location and that the drive will remain connected and available during operation.
- Choose an encoder and quality appropriate to the computer and material. OBS notes that recording settings other than Same as stream can require additional resources, so do not assume the machine can encode continuously at any chosen quality.
- Choose MKV as the recording format when recoverability after an ungraceful stop matters. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV because “MKV will not corrupt the whole file if there is no graceful stoppage of recording.” This reduces the risk of losing the entire recording file, but it does not recover missing recording time or guarantee that every file survives every failure. - If a downstream editor or workflow requires MP4, use OBS’s File → Remux Recordings function after the recording. Remuxing changes the container for compatibility; it is not a repair or recovery guarantee.
Estimate storage from your own settings
There is no universal drive size for a 24/7 school recording. Capacity depends on the selected encoding quality or bitrate, recording hours, and how long recordings must be retained. Calculate expected usage from the actual OBS settings and retention policy, then leave operational headroom and decide what happens when the volume approaches capacity. Choose video and audio settings that the computer can sustain
In Settings → Video, choose the base (canvas) resolution, output resolution, and frame rate that fit the school’s sources and intended presentation. The canvas is the working layout; output resolution is the recorded image size. Use a frame rate appropriate to the material rather than automatically choosing the highest available option. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be taxing compared with 30 fps, and the result depends on the actual computer. OBS Quick Start Guide
- For primarily static slides, announcements, or existing footage, use a resolution and frame rate that preserve the source without imposing unnecessary encoding load.
- Check audio device selection and meters while content is playing. Listen to a test file; visible meter movement alone does not prove that the final recording sounds correct.
- Test the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and recording quality together. A setting that works for a short test may still need longer-duration validation on the school’s machine.
Test before relying on the channel
OBS advises running a short test before the first real recording. Its Quick Start Guide says to test for a few minutes rather than immediately beginning a first production. - Select the intended profile and scene collection, then make a test recording for a few minutes.
- Inspect the resulting file: confirm it exists in the configured path, opens, shows the expected scenes, and has clear audio.
- Switch through every scene and check transitions, source visibility, and audio behavior.
- Verify available storage and confirm the recording volume remains connected and writable.
- Test the planned start procedure, including any scheduled launch, under realistic conditions before depending on it for school programming.
Launch OBS with the collection, profile, and recording selected
OBS documents launch parameters that can select a scene collection and profile and begin recording: --collection, --profile, and --startrecording. A Windows example is:
"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --collection "School Channel – Recording" --profile "School Recording" --startrecording

Adjust the executable path and names to match the installed computer and the exact collection and profile names. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation describes these as launch controls; they do not establish that OBS will restart after a crash or that recording will resume after power loss or storage failure. For a scheduled or automated Windows launch, OBS says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. OBS Launch Parameters
Plan separately for failures
A launch command is not a complete unattended operations plan. Determine how the school’s operating system or administrator will detect a stopped process, restart OBS if appropriate, alert a responsible person, and handle a full, disconnected, or failed recording drive. Test those mechanisms on the actual computer. Do not call the workflow uninterrupted or resilient unless those pieces have been implemented and verified.

Troubleshoot common recording problems
