A large file is not, by itself, a diagnosis: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and storage behavior can all affect playback differently. Work through the checks below and keep the settings that perform better on your system.
First, find out where the stutter comes from
OBS supports MP4 in Media Sources, but the available evidence does not establish that file size alone causes stuttering. Start with controlled comparisons so you do not change settings blindly.
- Play a second MP4 in the same scene. If it is smooth while the suspect file stutters, compare the files’ codecs, resolutions and frame rates.
- Put the suspect MP4 in a simple scene with no unnecessary sources or effects. If playback improves, scene complexity or system workload may be contributing.
- Check whether the stutter appears only in the OBS preview, in an OBS recording or stream, or in a regular media player. These are different symptoms and may have different causes.
Note the OBS version, operating system, file codec, resolution and frame rate, and whether playback stutters in another player. If the initial checks do not resolve it, those details and an OBS log are useful for narrowing down the problem.
Test Media Source hardware decoding
In OBS, open the Media Source properties and try Use hardware decoding when available. OBS documents this option as using the GPU to decode certain file types when the GPU has a suitable hardware decoder. It is off by default, and enabling it is not guaranteed to help every file or system. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes the setting and its requirements.

- Open the scene containing the Media Source and open that source’s properties.
- Enable Use hardware decoding when available, then restart playback and observe whether the stutter changes.
- If it does not help or makes playback worse, disable it and test again. Use the setting that behaves better with your file and hardware.
When comparing the two states, pay attention to actual playback and CPU/GPU utilization. Support depends on the file type and available hardware decoding; the checkbox alone does not mean a particular codec is being accelerated.
Reduce resolution and scene workload
If the MP4 has substantially more resolution than the scene output needs, test a lower-resolution export. OBS recommends lower-resolution media as a way to reduce source workload; this is a practical test, not proof that file size caused the stutter. Compare smoothness and image quality at the size the video appears in your scene. A smaller export can also affect storage requirements.

Test with a simple scene and close only applications you know are using substantial GPU resources and are not needed for the test. OBS identifies GPU overload, complex scenes and other GPU-heavy applications as possible contributors to performance problems. Compare Media Source with VLC Video
If the problem appears specific to how OBS handles this file, try a VLC Video source as a compatibility check. OBS’s VLC source uses VLC libraries for extended media support; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This option may behave differently with a file, but its availability does not guarantee smoother playback or fix the underlying issue. Use the symptom to choose the next check
- Only one MP4 stutters: Compare its codec, resolution and frame rate with a known-good MP4, and test it in a regular player. Do not assume the file is faulty until a comparison supports that conclusion.
- Several files stutter in one complex scene: Test a simple scene and reduce unnecessary sources or effects; then check for other GPU-heavy applications.
- Hardware decoding changes the result: Keep the better-performing state for this setup. Whether decoding is available depends on compatible hardware and the media type.
- OBS preview stutters, but the recording or stream does not: Treat this as a preview-specific symptom rather than evidence that the output is dropping frames.
- A regular player also stutters: The issue is not isolated to OBS. Compare another file and capture the file and system details before changing hardware or buying a utility.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide provides format context, but it does not establish a universal remedy for large-MP4 stuttering. Community descriptions such as “drops video frames,” “media source” and “choppy” can help describe what you see; they are not reliable evidence of a particular cause.
