How to Avoid Playlist Gaps on a YouTube 24/7 Stream in India

Use OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist for local video rotation, then test the YouTube feed, connection, and recovery path to reduce avoidable interruptions.

To loop a playlist of local videos in OBS, add them as a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. That keeps the files rotating inside OBS; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream to viewers. To reduce avoidable gaps, check the files and audio, match encoder settings to your measured upload capacity, test the complete stream, and monitor YouTube Live Control Room.

What counts as a playlist gap?

A gap may be a pause or blank between local files, a file that fails to play, a break in the encoded feed, or buffering on a viewer’s device. These are different failure points: OBS playback, the computer, the outbound connection, YouTube’s ingestion, and viewer playback. Loop Playlist addresses only the rotation of files in OBS—not the whole delivery chain.

YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream, and says lower latency leaves viewers less read-ahead buffer, which can make buffering more likely. For a non-interactive documentary, music, or ambience stream, low latency is not a playlist-gap fix. [YouTube streaming tips] [YouTube latency settings]

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. [OBS Media Sources]
  2. Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will go live. Select the local video files for the playlist.
  3. Choose the rotation. Set the intended file order, or enable Shuffle Playlist if the program should play in a random order. Shuffle and looping are separate controls; verify which behavior you want.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. This makes the selected playlist repeat after it reaches the end. For a single video rather than a playlist, use OBS’s regular Media Source and its Loop control. [OBS Media Sources]
  5. Check playback before going live. Preview the scene and confirm that the expected files play in the right order, with picture and audio. A loop setting cannot compensate for a damaged, unsupported, or unexpectedly silent file.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. [YouTube encoder setup]
  2. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create the stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key.
  3. Enter the connection details in OBS. Use the event’s server URL and stream key in the streaming settings for the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on-screen or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Check the preview and health messages. Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public. YouTube advises operators to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. [YouTube encoder settings] [YouTube stream metrics]

Choose encoder settings for the actual connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table for the exact combination rather than applying one number to every stream. Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Measure upload, not just download. Check outbound capacity at the location and on the connection the streaming computer will use. There is no established universal upload speed for Indian streamers; local results and conditions matter.
  • Leave headroom. YouTube recommends keeping available upload bandwidth 20% above the total bitrate being sent. That is a general recommendation, not an India-specific network measurement. Other people using the same connection can reduce what is available to OBS. [YouTube encoder settings] [YouTube streaming tips]
  • Set quality to what the line can sustain. A higher resolution or frame rate can require more bitrate. If the connection cannot hold the chosen rate with headroom, lower the output settings rather than running at the edge of capacity.
  • Do not lower latency just to solve file transitions. For a scheduled video stream without real-time interaction, the smaller read-ahead buffer at lower latency may increase viewer buffering without changing OBS playlist behavior. [YouTube latency settings]

Preflight the full stream and test recovery

  1. Test representative content. Preview video with motion and audio like the actual program. Confirm the playlist transitions as intended and that sound is routed to the live output.
  2. Watch the YouTube preview. Confirm that viewers can receive the event and check Live Control Room health indicators and error messages, not only the OBS preview.
  3. Test the connection under realistic conditions. Use the streaming location and network; avoid relying on a download-only speed result. Account for other devices sharing the connection.
  4. Plan a backup encoder if continuity warrants it. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player rolls over to the backup. A backup is a recovery path only when configured and tested; it does not promise that every interruption will be invisible. [YouTube streaming tips]

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive behavior, not a recommendation to divide a 24/7 broadcast into events at a particular interval; check current Studio guidance when planning long events. [YouTube encoder setup]

Troubleshoot gaps and buffering

Symptom Likely area What to check
OBS preview pauses, goes blank, or plays files in the wrong order Local source or playlist Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s 64-bit architecture where applicable; inspect the file selection, order, Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist settings, and whether each file plays cleanly. For a single repeated file, use Media Source’s Loop setting. [OBS Media Sources]
OBS output looks or sounds wrong Encoder or scene setup Check source routing, audio levels and output, encoder error messages, CPU load, and the local archive files. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder-output problems from connection problems. [YouTube live-stream troubleshooting]
OBS looks healthy but YouTube reports unstable health or viewers buffer Outbound connection, YouTube ingestion, or playback Check upload capacity and whether it stays above the total bitrate with headroom; account for shared network use. If the outbound connection is faulty, YouTube advises contacting the ISP. Check Live Control Room messages and stream metrics. [YouTube live-stream troubleshooting] [YouTube stream metrics]
The stream stops and does not resume as expected Encoder recovery or event configuration Confirm the event’s stream key and encoder status, then run the documented backup-encoder failover test. Do not assume a configured backup works until the player’s rollover has been checked. [YouTube streaming tips]

Keep the channel eligible and the program cleared

Before scheduling a long-running rotation, confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and that the event is configured in Live Control Room. For documentaries, verify that you have the rights or permissions needed for every video and its audio, including music and archival material. A playlist loop setting does not grant rights, prevent claims, or establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s policies on reused content. Review YouTube’s current rules and your channel’s notices before relying on a continuous broadcast.
