HBO Max/Max does not publish one definitive meaning for error code 420 in its public troubleshooting guidance. Treat it as a playback or app-connection failure and narrow down where it occurs: one device, one title, casting, or every device. Start by force-closing the app, trying another title, updating and restarting your device, then testing another device or network. HBO Max’s general error-code guidance recommends these kinds of checks rather than identifying a 420-specific cause.
Try these quick fixes first
- Force-close HBO Max/Max, then open it again.
- Try a different title. If that works, the issue may be limited to the original title or its playback format.
- Update the app and your device’s operating system or firmware.
- Sign out, fully restart the device—not just put it to sleep—and sign back in.
- Restart your modem and router. HBO Max recommends unplugging them, waiting about 30 seconds, reconnecting the modem, waiting for internet service, then reconnecting the router. See its error-code troubleshooting steps.
- Test another supported device or network to determine whether the problem follows the account, connection, or device.
If the error persists, use the symptom pattern below to choose the next steps rather than repeating every fix on every device.
What the pattern of the error can tell you

These patterns help isolate the fault; they do not prove its cause. HBO Max’s public guidance does not define 420 as specifically a VPN, network, account, DRM or outage error.
Fix Error 420 on a phone or tablet
- Force-close HBO Max and reopen it. Try another title.
- Check the App Store or Google Play for an app update, and install any available operating-system update.
- Sign out. Power off the phone or tablet completely, wait about 30 seconds, turn it back on and sign in again.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data as a diagnostic test. If playback works on one but not the other, investigate that network rather than assuming the app is at fault.
- If the problem occurs only in the app, uninstall and reinstall it.
On Android, try clearing the app cache first. If needed, clear app storage/data and sign in again; labels and locations vary by Android version. HBO Max’s device troubleshooting guide covers cache and data steps. Clearing data removes the app’s local session, so expect to sign in again.

Fix Error 420 in a web browser
- Sign out of HBO Max, restart the computer and sign back in.
- Use a current supported browser. Try another browser—such as Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari—to see whether the problem is browser-specific. HBO Max recommends trying another supported browser when an error persists on a computer.
- Open a private or incognito window. If playback works there, temporarily disable extensions—especially ad blockers, privacy tools and content filters—and test again.
- If needed, clear HBO Max/Max site data and cookies, then reload and sign in. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- If your browser has a protected-content or DRM playback setting, check that it is enabled.

Fix Error 420 on Fire TV
- Highlight the HBO Max app and check for an app update.
- Update Fire TV: Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update.
- Sign out of HBO Max, then restart Fire TV: Settings > My Fire TV > Restart.
- If the error remains, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > HBO Max. Choose Force Stop, then Clear Cache.
- If necessary, choose Clear Data and sign in again. As a final app-specific step, uninstall and reinstall HBO Max.
Fix Error 420 on Android TV
- Highlight HBO Max, press and hold Select, then choose View Details > Update if an update is available.
- Check for a TV update: Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update.
- Sign out of HBO Max. Restart the TV using Settings > About > Restart > Restart.
- Open Settings > Apps > HBO Max > Clear cache. If needed, choose Clear data and sign in again.
- If the app still fails while other apps work, uninstall and reinstall HBO Max.

Fix Error 420 on Roku
- Highlight the HBO Max channel, press the Star (*) button and check for an update.
- Update Roku: Settings > System > System update > Check now.
- Sign out of HBO Max. Restart a Roku player with Settings > System > System restart; on a Roku TV, use Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- If needed, unplug the Roku for about 20 seconds, reconnect it and try again.
- If the error remains isolated to HBO Max on this Roku, remove and reinstall the channel.
Fix Error 420 on Apple TV
- Check the App Store for an HBO Max app update.
- Update Apple TV: Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.
- Sign out of HBO Max, then restart Apple TV: Settings > System > Restart.
- If it still fails, delete HBO Max and reinstall it, then sign in again.

If Error 420 appears only while casting
Older community reports describe 420 errors during Chromecast casting, including some UHD playback cases. These reports are anecdotal and do not establish an official meaning for the code. If direct playback works but casting fails, focus on the casting and display path:
- Confirm the phone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Update HBO Max, Google Home or Google TV software, and Chromecast firmware where applicable. Restart the phone, Chromecast, TV and router.
- Play the same title directly on the phone or TV app, then try a different title and a non-4K title.
- Temporarily connect Chromecast directly to the TV instead of routing it through an AV receiver, HDMI switch or soundbar. Try another HDMI port.
- Check whether the TV and any receiver in the chain support the HDCP and 4K path required for the content. Temporarily bypass unusual HDMI processing or receiver settings to test.
Community accounts of Chromecast and UHD errors are available at one historical report and another historical discussion. They suggest possible equipment-path issues in some cases, not a universal fix.

Check the network, VPN and connection quality
HBO Max lists at least 5 Mbps download speed for HD and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K. These are its stated connection figures, not guarantees of stable playback: interference, congestion, packet loss or a weak Wi-Fi signal at the TV can still disrupt streaming. As a reversible diagnostic test, temporarily turn off a VPN, proxy, Smart DNS service, iCloud Private Relay or similar traffic-routing tool. Close and reopen HBO Max after changing the setting, then try again on your usual connection. The reviewed official support guidance does not identify VPN use as the definition of error 420; third-party explanations vary, and no regional restriction should be bypassed.

When to stop troubleshooting locally
Try another title, another device on the same Wi-Fi, the same device on another network, and another streaming service on your connection. A failure across several devices and networks points more strongly toward a service-side or account issue than a fault confined to one app installation. It does not confirm an outage; HBO Max is the authority on service status. If every device and title fails, wait briefly and retry rather than repeatedly reinstalling apps or changing network settings.
Contact HBO Max support if the error continues across supported devices or networks, a particular title repeatedly fails on multiple devices, or basic updates, restarts and app recovery steps have not helped. If your subscription is billed through a cable, mobile or app-store provider, that provider may need to help with billing or account access.
