Greyed-out Apple Music tracks can point to very different problems: a song may have left the catalog, explicit-content restrictions may block it, a purchase may belong to another Apple Account, or a local file may no longer be where the Music app expects it. Start by checking the error message and whether the issue affects one song or many; avoid deleting your library or resetting Sync Library until you have identified the likely cause.
First, narrow down the problem
Before changing settings, note what is affected and where:
- One song or a few songs: Check whether each track is still in the Apple Music catalog, hidden, restricted, or tied to a purchase.
- Many songs on every device: Check the Apple Account, subscription, Sync Library, and cloud-library status.
- Only one device: Check that device’s account and Sync Library settings, then allow time for it to sync.
- Music imported from a CD or local folder: Confirm that the original file still exists on the Mac or PC that manages the library.
Also consider whether the problem began after changing Apple Accounts or regions, replacing a device, changing Screen Time settings, or turning Sync Library on or off. When you tap or click a greyed-out item, record any message it displays.
Apple’s greyed-out song troubleshooting guide lists several possible causes, including account mismatches, restrictions, hidden songs, catalog availability, and Sync Library or local-file problems. A grey entry is not, by itself, proof that your subscription has expired.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Try these checks before changing your library
- Confirm the Apple Account. Make sure the device is using the account associated with the Apple Music subscription. For a purchased track, check the account that actually bought it; that may not be the account used for a family subscription.
- Search Apple Music for the song. Look up the title and artist directly. If a current version is available, the grey entry may be stale; if no version appears, the track may have left the catalog or be unavailable in your region.
- Check content restrictions. If only explicit tracks are affected, review Screen Time or content-restriction settings and allow explicit music.
- Check whether the song is hidden. Review the account’s hidden purchases or hidden music and unhide the track if appropriate. Hiding a purchase is not the same as deleting it.
- Verify Sync Library. If you use Apple Music or iTunes Match for cloud-library syncing, make sure the same Apple Account is in use and Sync Library is enabled on the relevant devices. Apple’s Sync Library guide explains the feature and its requirements.
- Check Apple service status. If access changed suddenly across many devices, check Apple System Status before making library changes.
Match the symptom to the fix
| What you see | Likely explanation | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Only explicit songs are greyed out | Content restriction | Allow explicit music in Screen Time or content restrictions. |
| “This song is not currently available in your country or region” | Catalog rights, a removed track, or a stale library entry | Search the current catalog in your region; re-add the current version if it appears. |
| “No Longer Available” on one or a few songs | The catalog version may have been removed or replaced | Search for another available release or version. |
| Purchased songs are greyed out | Wrong purchasing account, authorization, or hidden purchase | Use the purchasing Apple Account; check authorization and hidden purchases. |
| Local tracks are missing on iPhone or iPad | The source file may be missing or cloud upload may have failed | Locate the original file on the Mac or PC, re-import it if needed, and update Cloud Library. |
| Many songs are greyed out everywhere | Account, subscription, Sync Library, or cloud-library issue | Verify the account and Sync Library, then inspect Cloud Status on the source computer. |
| Songs work on a Mac but not on iPhone or iPad | The mobile device may not have synced the library | Check its account and Sync Library setting, then update Cloud Library on the computer. |
If the song is unavailable in your country or region
The message can indicate that a track is no longer licensed in your current region or has been removed from Apple Music. It can also appear beside an outdated library entry. Search for the song directly in Apple Music while signed in to the account and region you currently use.
If the song appears in search, remove only the greyed-out library entry and add the available version. This can replace a stale listing, but it is not a guaranteed fix. If the song does not appear, a sign-out, app reinstall, or Sync Library reset cannot make an unavailable catalog track playable. Do not change your account’s country or region casually: availability depends on the catalog and region, and a region change can affect other account services.
If explicit songs are affected
When explicit tracks are greyed out but clean versions play, content restrictions are a strong clue. On the affected iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows device, review its Screen Time or content-restriction settings and allow Explicit music. Menu names and locations vary by operating-system version; if the displayed path differs, search Settings for “Content Restrictions” or “Music.” If the restriction is managed by a parent, guardian, or organization, you may need that person or administrator to change it.

If you bought the song from the iTunes Store
A purchase and an Apple Music subscription are not interchangeable. Subscription access and Sync Library depend on the subscription account and applicable service; a purchased download is associated with the Apple Account used to buy it.
- Check that the device or computer is signed in to the Apple Account that made the purchase.
- On a Mac or Windows computer, authorize it to play iTunes Store purchases if prompted or required.
- Look in the purchased-music section and redownload the track if it is missing from the library.
- If it still does not appear, check whether it is hidden and whether you may have bought it using a different account.
Before buying the song again, verify the original purchase account and hidden-purchase list. A new purchase will not fix a track that is simply awaiting authorization or attached to another account.
If the song is hidden
Open your Music or Apple Account settings and look for hidden purchases or hidden music. Unhide the song, then return to your library and try playing or downloading it again. The precise route varies across devices and software versions. Unhiding restores the item’s visibility; it does not necessarily resolve a separate catalog, account, or sync problem.

If your library is not syncing
Check the basics on every device involved:
- They are signed in to the same Apple Account associated with the Apple Music subscription.
- Sync Library is enabled on each device where you expect the cloud library to appear.
- Each device has a working internet connection.
- The Mac or PC containing the source library has finished processing and updating its cloud library.
If you use a Mac or Windows computer as the source, update Cloud Library there:
- Mac: Open Music, choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library.
- Windows: In Apple Music for Windows, open Sidebar Actions at the top of the sidebar, choose Library, then select Update Cloud Library.
Apple uses the current term Sync Library; older instructions may call it iCloud Music Library. The control’s exact location depends on your device and app version. Sync Library is available with an Apple Music subscription or iTunes Match; without the applicable service, you may need to sync music manually instead.
Use Cloud Status to diagnose computer-library tracks
On a Mac or in Apple Music for Windows, select Songs and use the view or table options to display Cloud Status and Cloud Download. These columns can help distinguish tracks that have matched or uploaded from ones still waiting, in error, unavailable, deleted, or not found. Use the status to choose the next step rather than assuming every grey item needs a subscription fix. Apple explains this check in its troubleshooting guidance.

A download icon is not the same as grey text: it generally indicates a track that can be downloaded but is not stored locally. Greyed-out tracks point to an availability, restriction, account, sync, or file-resolution issue, although icons and their appearance can vary between Apple Music interfaces.

A CD rip or file imported from a folder may not exist in Apple’s catalog. The library may show a reference to the track even when its audio file has moved, been renamed, or is on an unmounted external drive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Search the Mac or PC for the original audio file. If the library is on an external drive, connect and mount it.
- If you find the file, drag it into Music on Mac or Apple Music for Windows to add it back to the library.
- Wait for the app to process it, then choose Update Cloud Library.
- Check Cloud Status again and confirm the track is available before removing or moving the original file.
Do not delete the original audio file just because its library entry is grey. The entry may be broken while the file itself is still recoverable.

Turn Sync Library off and on only as a last resort
If the account is correct, restrictions and catalog availability have been checked, and Cloud Status still points to a persistent sync problem, cycling Sync Library may trigger a fresh synchronization. It is not a universal repair, and it can take time for a large library to rebuild.
Before turning it off: preserve local music files, confirm imported tracks still exist on the source computer, and make a separate backup. Apple warns that Apple Music is not a backup service. Turning off Sync Library removes downloaded music from devices; it does not necessarily erase original files stored on your Mac or PC. After turning it back on, connect to a reliable network and allow the library to finish syncing before judging the result.
Avoid deleting the whole library as an initial fix. That can remove downloads or references, create duplicates, and make it harder to identify the cause without restoring a track that has left the catalog.

If a song has genuinely been removed from the catalog or is not licensed in your region, Apple Music may not offer a playable version. Look for another current release or version in the catalog. If you have a legitimate local copy, keep the original file safe and add it back to your library. If the track was purchased, first confirm the purchasing account and try redownloading it. None of these steps guarantees that every greyed-out song can be recovered.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if a confirmed purchase cannot be redownloaded, purchase authorization repeatedly fails on the correct account, Sync Library will not activate, a large library continues to show cloud errors, or multiple devices disagree about a song’s availability. Mention any recent account or region change and provide the exact error message. If the issue affects many users or started suddenly, check Apple System Status first.
