How to Fix Focus, Exposure, and Monitoring Problems on a PYXIS 6K Documentary Shoot

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a PYXIS 6K documentary shoot, separate a soft recording from a misleading display before changing settings. Confirm the lens and focus mode, use focus assistance on the output you are actually watching, read false color before altering exposure, and verify that overlays are routed to the correct screen. One important qualification comes first: Blackmagic’s published PYXIS information is inconsistent about autofocus. The regional technical specifications describe manual focus, while the product page says autofocus is supported and available for download. Check the installed camera software, mount, lens model and current compatibility information on the specific camera before relying on autofocus.

The procedure below starts with the camera’s built-in tools. It also explains when a monitor problem is only a viewing problem, how to recover from distracting focus overlays, and when the optional Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor could make a documentary rig easier to operate.

Start by identifying what is actually wrong

A documentary operator can describe three different failures as “the image looks wrong”: the recorded subject is out of focus, the exposure is unsuitable, or the monitor is showing an unhelpful version of an otherwise usable image. Treating all three as camera-setting problems can make the situation worse.

Check whether the recorded subject is soft

  • Look for detail on the subject’s most important edge: an eye, a mouth, a document, or a distinctive object. Do not judge focus from foliage, brickwork or hair alone; those textures can create convincing but irrelevant detail.
  • Confirm that the lens is fully mounted and that its controls communicate as intended. A loose mount, an incompatible lens or a control left in the wrong mode can look like a focusing failure.
  • Distinguish missed focus from motion blur. A moving subject, slow shutter setting or camera movement can soften a frame even when the focus plane is correct.
  • If possible, inspect a magnified area, then return to the normal composition and check again after the subject moves. A focus check that succeeds only while the subject is still may not survive an interview or walk-and-talk.

Check whether exposure is wrong

Use false color to evaluate the subject rather than judging brightness by eye. If false color indicates a reasonable exposure but the screen looks too bright or dark, investigate display brightness, viewing angle and ambient light before changing iris, ISO or shutter.

Check whether the monitor is the problem

A focus aid or false-color overlay can be enabled on one output and absent from another. The image may also be correctly exposed while a brightened or dimmed touchscreen gives a misleading impression. Establish which display the operator is using and whether that output is receiving the required overlays.

Symptom First check Likely corrective action
Eyes look soft, but busy background has sharp edges Focus mode, lens communication and focus-assist level Switch to a deliberate manual focus check or verify autofocus compatibility; lower assistance if texture is masking the subject
Skin looks too bright or dark while the monitor impression disagrees False color and screen brightness Use the exposure indication for the camera adjustment; change display brightness only to improve viewing
Focus peaking is visible on one screen but not another Per-output monitor settings and routing Enable the aid on the output being watched and confirm the current PYXIS firmware’s menu names
The built-in screen is blocked or badly placed on a rig Physical viewing position, not image quality Reposition the rig or consider the optional compatible PYXIS Monitor

Fixing focus on the PYXIS 6K

Resolve the autofocus discrepancy before a critical take

Do not assume that every PYXIS 6K body and lens has the same autofocus behavior. Blackmagic’s PYXIS technical specifications list manual focus and manual iris. A separate PYXIS product page says autofocus is supported and available for download. Those statements do not establish a universal, lens-by-lens autofocus workflow, nor do they identify the release version that added or enabled it.

Before depending on autofocus for a documentary scene, perform this verification on the actual camera:

  1. Open the camera’s software-information screen and record the installed Blackmagic OS version.
  2. Identify the body mount: PYXIS 6K, 6K PL or 6K EF hardware may present different lens choices.
  3. Record the exact lens model and check whether its electronic communication, focus motor and firmware are supported by the current manufacturer information.
  4. Confirm the selected focus mode and the physical lens controls. A lens set to manual operation cannot behave as an electronically driven autofocus lens.
  5. Test the intended subject distance and movement under the same lighting as the shoot. If the result is inconsistent, plan a manual-focus workflow rather than treating autofocus as guaranteed.

If the camera, software or lens does not provide suitable autofocus, that is not a reason to abandon the shot. Manual focus with an appropriately configured aid is often more predictable for an interview, a planned entrance or a scene in which a focus transition should look deliberate.

Turn on focus assistance on the output you use

Blackmagic describes focus assist as a colored highlight on fine image detail so the operator can see which parts of the image are in focus. The wording appears on the official PYXIS Blackmagic OS feature page. The same page lists focus among the camera’s quick-access functions.

The April 2025 Blackmagic Cinema Camera Installation and Operation Manual describes peaking and colored-lines styles and explains that “the optimum level of focus assistance varies shot by shot.” That manual concerns the related Cinema Camera 6K, not a PYXIS-specific menu, so confirm the exact labels and navigation on the firmware installed in your PYXIS.

  1. Select the monitoring output you are actually watching: the camera display, an HDMI screen or a viewfinder-style accessory, as applicable to your rig.
  2. Enable focus assistance for that output rather than assuming one global switch controls every display.
  3. Begin at a moderate intensity. Increase it only until the important facial or object edges become easy to identify.
  4. Move the subject or make the intended camera move and check whether the highlight stays on the intended plane.
  5. Reduce the intensity if the frame fills with edges from leaves, brick, patterned clothing or other high-frequency texture.

Choose peaking or colored lines for the scene

The related Blackmagic manual describes both peaking and colored-lines approaches. They are not competing claims about image quality; they are different ways of making edge detail visible while you focus. Because the PYXIS menu presentation can change with firmware, use the following as a choice framework and verify the available names in-camera.

Assist style Strength Risk Useful documentary situation
Peaking Fast to read with relatively little visual obstruction Can be ambiguous when many textures are equally sharp Run-and-gun work where you need a quick confirmation without covering the frame
Colored lines More explicit edge marking when the frame is difficult to read Can cover too much of a busy image at high intensity Careful interview setup or a close-up in which facial edges must be isolated

Do not leave the strongest setting on simply because it looks reassuring. A dense outline over foliage may indicate texture rather than the plane containing the subject’s eyes. Focus assistance is a visibility aid; it does not decide which object matters in the shot.

Use magnification for critical faces and details

For an interview, a close-up, a document or a small object, inspect a magnified area if focus zoom is available on your camera configuration. Focus on the critical detail, return to the normal framing view, and check the whole composition. The PYXIS product material lists focus and zoom among quick-access functions, but the available search did not establish every PYXIS menu sequence. Confirm the control location on the installed firmware rather than following a menu path from a different Blackmagic model.

Make focus repeatable during documentary movement

  • Set the focus distance before the subject begins the planned action, then check the near and far limits of that movement.
  • For a seated interview, verify the eye nearest the camera and then ask the subject to lean or turn as they naturally will during the conversation.
  • For a walk-and-talk, rehearse the distance change and decide whether an operator, a follow-focus system or a verified autofocus mode will keep the subject inside the acceptable focus range.
  • After changing lenses, mounts, frame rate or camera position, repeat the focus check. A change that appears unrelated can alter the working distance, field of view or motion rendering.

Fixing exposure with false color and deliberate controls

Read the PYXIS false-color indications

Blackmagic’s official PYXIS OS page states: “False color overlays colors to represent different exposure values.” It identifies pink as an optimum indication for lighter skin tones, green for darker skin tones and red as overexposure. These are the manufacturer’s guidance points, not a universal target for every complexion, lighting design, reflective costume or creative look. See the feature description at Blackmagic’s PYXIS Blackmagic OS page.

False-color indication Manufacturer guidance How to use it on a documentary set
Pink Optimum indication for lighter skin tones Check the important facial area, then decide whether the scene’s mood or highlight protection calls for a different creative exposure
Green Optimum indication for darker skin tones Inspect the face and preserve detail in the surrounding scene rather than forcing every part of the frame to the same color
Red Overexposure Identify whether the red area is a critical highlight, a light source or an accidental clipped subject detail before correcting

False color is an exposure aid, not an automatic exposure decision. Use it to locate the problem and then choose the control that produces the intended image.

Understand the three main exposure controls

The PYXIS material identifies iris, ISO and shutter as the principal camera exposure controls:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Iris: changes the amount of light passing through the lens. It also changes depth of field, so opening the iris to brighten a face can make the focus margin narrower.
  • ISO: changes the camera’s sensitivity or exposure response. The practical result depends on the camera’s operating range, lighting and the desired noise and highlight behavior.
  • Shutter: changes exposure and motion rendering. A faster setting can darken the image but may make movement look more abrupt; a slower setting can brighten it while increasing motion blur.

When diagnosing a problem, change one control at a time, then read false color again. This makes it clear whether the correction came from the iris, ISO or shutter and prevents an accidental combination of compensating changes.

A step-by-step exposure correction

  1. Set the composition and the frame rate and shutter choice appropriate to the intended motion rendering.
  2. Enable false color on the operator’s active display.
  3. Place the key subject in the scene and inspect the face or other detail that must be preserved.
  4. Identify whether the indication points to underexposure, the manufacturer’s skin-tone guidance, or overexposure.
  5. Choose one correction: adjust iris when depth of field allows, ISO when sensitivity is the intended variable, or shutter when motion rendering can change.
  6. Recheck false color after the adjustment and inspect the normal image without the overlay.
  7. Record a short test clip if the lighting is changing or the scene contains important highlights. Review the recorded image, not only the live monitor.

Do not use screen brightness as an exposure control

The PYXIS OS includes touchscreen brightness adjustment. Raising or lowering that setting changes the operator’s view, not the light recorded by the sensor. If the false-color indication supports the exposure but the display looks wrong, correct the display brightness or viewing conditions instead of changing iris, ISO or shutter. Conversely, a comfortable screen brightness does not prove that exposure is correct.

Exposure pitfalls in real locations

  • Bright windows: decide whether the window, the person or both are narratively important. Red on a window may be an intentional highlight-protection choice rather than a reason to darken the entire interview.
  • Mixed interiors: inspect the subject’s face first, then check practical lights and reflective objects. A single false-color patch should not dictate the exposure of every element.
  • Exterior transitions: repeat the check when leaving shade, entering a building or moving through changing cloud cover. The exposure that worked in one location may not survive the transition.
  • Dark clothing and backgrounds: do not force dark areas toward the skin-tone indications. The colors describe exposure values, not a requirement that every object match the subject.

Restoring a useful monitoring image

Verify output routing and per-output overlays

The related Blackmagic Cinema Camera manual describes separate monitor settings and says focus assistance can be enabled individually for LCD, HDMI and viewfinder outputs. Use that as related-camera guidance, not as a guarantee of PYXIS menu wording. On the current PYXIS firmware, verify which output is active and where the overlay controls are located.

  1. Identify the display the operator is using during the take.
  2. Confirm that the display receives a live camera signal rather than a playback or alternate source.
  3. Enable focus assistance and false color on that output when setting focus or exposure.
  4. Turn overlays off or reduce them when judging composition and creative contrast, then restore the required aid before the next setup.
  5. If one screen shows an aid and another does not, compare their individual monitor settings instead of assuming the camera has lost the feature.

When the image is visible but hard to judge

Improve the viewing conditions before changing camera settings. Shade the screen, change the operator’s angle, clean the display and set a usable brightness. A monitor that is washed out by sunlight can make a correctly exposed image appear weak; a screen set too bright in a dark room can make the operator close the iris unnecessarily.

If the overlay is too aggressive, lower focus-assist intensity or switch styles. If false color obscures the composition, use it briefly for the exposure check and then return to the normal image. The aid is most useful when it answers a specific question and is removed when that question is settled.

Using the optional Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor

The Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor is an optional official accessory listed as compatible with PYXIS 6K, 6K PL and 6K EF variants. Blackmagic presents it as an additional monitoring and camera-control option; the accessory listing is at the PYXIS Monitor compatibility information. The listed kit identifies a clip-on sunshade. Verify current stock, price, included mounting hardware and the exact kit contents before purchase.

The monitor can solve a placement problem: it may be easier to position where an operator, director or focus assistant can see it without leaning into the camera. It does not repair a misfocused lens, change exposure recorded by the sensor or replace the built-in focus and false-color tools.

Option Advantages Trade-offs Best fit
Built-in PYXIS display No extra component, fast access to camera tools, minimal rig weight May be blocked by a cage, shoulder rig or awkward camera position Lightweight documentary work and setups where the operator can see the body clearly
Blackmagic PYXIS Monitor More flexible placement and an additional camera-control/viewing point; listed as compatible with PYXIS variants Adds cost, mounting needs and another physical component; optional rather than required Rigs where the body screen is inaccessible or a second viewing position improves operation

A resilient documentary workflow

Before recording an important interview

  1. Mount the chosen lens securely and confirm its electronic or manual controls.
  2. Check the PYXIS software version, focus mode and lens compatibility on the actual body.
  3. Frame the subject at the real interview distance.
  4. Use focus assistance at a moderate level; magnify the critical eye or detail if the feature is available.
  5. Return to the normal framing and ask the subject to move naturally while you verify that focus remains where intended.
  6. Enable false color and set exposure using the face or other editorially important detail.
  7. Return to the normal image, confirm that the display brightness is comfortable, and verify that the required overlays appear on the operator’s chosen output.
  8. Record a short clip and review it if the interview cannot be repeated.

After a change in conditions

Repeat the checks after changing lenses, frame rate, camera position, interior or exterior location, lighting direction, or monitoring output. These changes can alter focus distance, motion appearance, exposure or the information visible to the operator. A quick recheck is faster than discovering a soft or clipped sequence in post-production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the shoot must continue despite uncertain autofocus

Plan for manual focus. Mark or remember the critical distances, use a moderate focus aid, and rehearse the subject’s movement. A manual-focus follow-focus system and a compatible cine lens are category-level options when the operator needs repeatable pulls, but compatibility depends on the PYXIS mount, lens and rig; verify those combinations before committing to them.

Decision guide: which fix should you apply?

Choice Use it when Verify first
Autofocus The installed software and lens provide reliable operation for the subject’s movement Current body software, mount, exact lens model and the intended subject distance; official PYXIS pages do not agree on a universal AF status
Manual focus with peaking You need a fast, relatively unobstructed indication during moving documentary coverage That the edge highlight is on the subject rather than background texture
Manual focus with colored lines You need more explicit edge marking for a controlled close-up or interview Intensity, because busy textures can cover the frame
Built-in display The operator can see and shade the camera screen Per-output overlays and usable brightness
PYXIS Monitor Rig geometry makes the body display difficult to place or share Compatibility, mounting hardware, sunshade and current kit contents

Final pre-roll checklist

  • Lens mounted and communicating as intended.
  • Focus mode confirmed on the actual body and lens.
  • Autofocus used only after software, mount and lens compatibility are verified.
  • Focus assist enabled on the output being watched and set for the scene’s texture.
  • Critical detail checked at magnification when available, then rechecked in the normal frame.
  • False color enabled for the exposure check.
  • Iris, ISO or shutter changed deliberately, one variable at a time.
  • Monitor brightness judged separately from captured exposure.
  • Overlays and signal routing confirmed on the operator’s chosen display.
  • Focus and exposure rechecked after every major location, lens, frame-rate or monitoring change.
