Start by copying the current stream key from the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and updating the value FFmpeg uses. If that does not resolve the problem, check that the key belongs to the selected stream and that the ingest URL, application path, and protocol match its settings. A wrong or mismatched RTMP/RTMPS destination can cause a connection failure that is not actually a bad credential.
1. Make sure you are using the key for the right stream
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream (labels can vary), then select the scheduled or current broadcast you intend to send to. Copy the key shown for that stream in Live Control Room. YouTube treats the stream key as the encoder’s credential and routing value; a key copied from another stream may not be appropriate for this one. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
If the key may have been reset, expired, or copied incorrectly, reset or create a key in Live Control Room and replace the old value wherever FFmpeg gets it. YouTube’s stated first remedy for a third-party encoder startup problem is to get a new key there and update the encoder: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream. Channel owners and managers can reset keys; editors and viewers cannot.
2. Update FFmpeg’s destination, not just the password-like value
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. FFmpeg represents RTMP destinations through URL components such as the server, application, and playpath; YouTube’s ingestion configuration may expose an address and stream name separately. Depending on the encoder configuration, those parts may be supplied separately or combined in a URL. Compare each component with the values shown for the selected stream rather than moving the key into a different URL position by guesswork. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, FFmpeg’s protocol documentation, and the YouTube Live Streaming API stream fields.

This schematic command shows the general shape, not a verified universal command for every current YouTube stream configuration:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_OR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Replace the placeholders locally with the exact destination and key for your stream. Do not paste a real key into a public example, screenshot, issue, or support log. Because shell history can retain a command, avoid placing a live key directly in a command you may leave behind; use a protected configuration file or another appropriate local secret-handling method. Redact the key if sharing your command for troubleshooting.

3. Match RTMP or RTMPS to the URL and endpoint
Use the protocol and endpoint shown for the stream. Do not switch from RTMP to RTMPS—or the reverse—while leaving the old protocol’s URL in place.
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Protocol | If the selected setup uses RTMPS, the URL scheme must be rtmps. |
| Endpoint and path | Use the current YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint and valid application name shown for the stream; do not guess or reuse another stream’s values. |
| Port and TLS | YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443 and a TLS connection. |
| Hostname | Use the correct server name so TLS server name indication (SNI) authentication can work. |
Google notes that an SSL certificate error can result from attempting SSL against an RTMP endpoint, while a timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Diagnose these as transport or endpoint problems separately from a rejected key. Consult Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide for the current protocol requirements.

4. Retest and distinguish a rejected key from a failed connection
- Start FFmpeg with the corrected stream destination and key.
- Check Live Control Room for whether YouTube receives a preview and reports stream health.
- Read the complete FFmpeg stderr output, not just a wrapper’s short “invalid stream key” summary. Note whether it reports a credential rejection, TLS/certificate problem, timeout, or another connection error.
- If the key and endpoint match, check the installed FFmpeg version and build’s protocol support, then investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends using an up-to-date encoder and checking stream health and the outbound connection when an encoder feed is problematic: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
Linux mainly affects how you run FFmpeg, quote a URL, and install or build the binary; the YouTube guidance cited here is platform-neutral. Exact UI labels and stream endpoints can change, so use the values displayed for your current stream.
5. Common causes and fixes
| Symptom or likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Old or uncertain key | Copy or reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the configuration or wrapper that supplies it to FFmpeg. |
| Key for a different broadcast | Select the intended scheduled/current stream and use its displayed key and destination values. |
| Malformed URL or application path | Compare the server URL, application, and stream name/key with the current stream settings. Check whether your setup expects separate fields or a combined URL. |
| RTMPS certificate error | Check that the endpoint is the RTMPS endpoint, the scheme is rtmps, and the hostname is correct for TLS/SNI. |
| Timeout or no incoming preview | Check for a protocol mismatch, incorrect endpoint or port, and outbound network connectivity; inspect FFmpeg’s full stderr output. |
| Configuration appears right, but YouTube still gets no healthy feed | Check the FFmpeg build/version and Live Control Room health state. A message described informally as “invalid key” does not prove the key is the cause. |
6. Details to collect if it still fails
For a useful troubleshooting report, include the redacted FFmpeg command, complete error output, FFmpeg version and configuration, whether the selected transport is RTMP or RTMPS, and whether Live Control Room receives a preview. Remove the key and any other secret values before sharing; the key can authorize sending a feed to your channel.
