Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A “Broken pipe” message means FFmpeg could not write to its YouTube output; it does not, by itself, identify why. The connection may have failed, YouTube may have closed the ingest, the URL or stream key may be wrong or stale, or an upstream input may have stopped. Check the FFmpeg log and YouTube Live Control Room first, then change only the setting that evidence points to.
1. Find where the failure begins
Save the FFmpeg output around the first error, including the lines before “Broken pipe.” The last message is the symptom, not a diagnosis. Note whether FFmpeg was opening the connection or had been writing successfully, and whether the input was still advancing when output failed.
At the same timestamp, check the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Its stream health and timestamped error messages can distinguish critical errors from moderate quality problems; unresolved errors continue to appear. Use the reported problem to guide the next check rather than changing several encoder flags at once. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide.
If the input itself stopped advancing, investigate that input separately; an output reconnect will not fix an upstream source that has ended or stalled. A precise diagnosis depends on the command and surrounding log, so redact stream keys, credentials, and private URLs before sharing either.

2. Verify the YouTube ingest URL and key
In Live Control Room, confirm the current stream URL and key, then compare them with the FFmpeg output endpoint. If you switched or recreated a stream, refresh the values rather than relying on an old command.
For RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL shown under the lock icon in the stream settings. Do not turn an RTMP URL into an RTMPS URL by editing its text. For a YouTube SSL error, YouTube specifically advises checking that both the server and protocol use rtmps; if the URL appears correct and the SSL error persists, its guidance suggests port 443 and asks you to verify that the encoder supports RTMPS. Those checks apply to related connection or SSL errors, not every broken-pipe failure. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

3. Match FFmpeg settings to YouTube’s ingest requirements
Use the resolution and bitrate selected for the YouTube stream, and compare them with the settings reported in Live Control Room. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe every two seconds, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate tables; guidance can change, so verify it there when configuring a stream.
Illustrative H.264 bitrate values
For H.264, YouTube lists these values for the specified frame rate. They are ingest recommendations, not a measurement of what your internet connection can sustain.

| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube’s live error guide also flags unsupported codecs or audio, an incorrect resolution/bitrate, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and frame-rate or keyframe problems. Correct the mismatch identified by the stream health report; do not assume a codec or bitrate change will resolve a network write failure. See YouTube’s error explanations.
4. Check whether the upload connection can sustain the stream
Compare the selected stream bitrate with sustainable upload capacity, not just a brief best-case speed. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live. Account for other traffic using the connection; if capacity is too low or variable, lower the resolution or bitrate and try again with representative motion and audio. Watch stream health during the test. YouTube’s encoder guide.

A lower-quality target that the connection can hold steadily is generally more useful than a higher target that repeatedly drops. The published bitrate recommendations describe encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular connection will carry them reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Decide whether FFmpeg should retry a transient output failure
Direct output is simpler. If the input continues but a temporary output write failure interrupts delivery, FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer can queue packets and run the actual muxer in another thread, with an option to attempt recovery. This adds resilience to some transient failures; it does not establish that YouTube or the network is healthy, and it cannot guarantee seamless resumption of the same live session. FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer and its options.

Example using FIFO output
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1
-recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
'rtmp://YOUR_CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
This adapts FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example; replace the illustrative input and endpoint with your actual values. Keep the stream key private. Confirm that the input has both video and audio before using the two explicit maps, or adjust the maps to match your source. Verify the option names against the FFmpeg build you use.
Understand the recovery trade-offs
-attempt_recovery 1enables retries; FFmpeg’s default is off. In the example,-recovery_wait_time 1sets a one-second wait. The documented default is five seconds.max_recovery_attemptsdefaults to zero, meaning unlimited attempts. For a production service, consider a finite limit and a deliberate process supervisor/restart policy rather than an uncontrolled retry loop.- The FIFO queue defaults to 60 packets. A larger queue can hold more media during a short interruption, but also keeps more queued content and cannot solve a prolonged outage.
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets the encoder keep moving instead of blocking when the queue fills. The cost is omitted packets, which can cause a visible or audible gap. Blocking avoids that packet loss but can stall encoding.- FFmpeg documents
restart_with_keyframefor waiting for a keyframe after recovery. Test whether it helps produce a clean video restart with your encoder and stream.
Test recovery on a controlled stream before relying on it during an event. If the stream was intentionally stopped, the key is invalid, YouTube rejects the configuration, or the ingest session no longer accepts output, retrying may not restore the same event. Check Live Control Room rather than assuming reconnect means publishing has resumed.
6. Treat TCP keepalive as a narrow diagnostic aid
FFmpeg’s TCP protocol supports keepalive, which enables the operating system’s basic SO_KEEPALIVE behavior; it is disabled by default. It may help detect dead peers on long-lived idle connections, but it does not repair a broken route or guarantee recovery from a broken pipe. It is not a general-purpose fix for a stream that is actively failing while writing. FFmpeg TCP protocol options.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Failure occurs while opening or reconnecting | Recheck the current URL and key in Live Control Room, RTMP/RTMPS selection, and encoder support for RTMPS if applicable. |
| Output worked, then failed; input still advances | Compare the failure time with YouTube’s health messages and check upload stability. FIFO recovery may help with a transient output interruption. |
| YouTube reports a codec, audio, resolution, bitrate, frame-rate, or keyframe error | Correct that specific ingest mismatch using the current YouTube settings and error guidance. |
| Stream health worsens during motion or busy network use | Test upload capacity under realistic conditions, account for competing traffic, and lower the target bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| FFmpeg retries but the event does not resume | Check whether the key, configuration, or YouTube session is still accepting output; retries do not guarantee session continuity. |
