Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no universal FFmpeg flag that fixes YouTube stream lag. First find out where the delay or quality problem begins: in the source or local encode, in YouTube ingest, or during viewer playback. If FFmpeg reports timestamp warnings, compare input and output timestamps and check how your command handles decode timestamps before changing flags.
First determine whether timestamps are causing the problem
A timestamp warning and viewer-perceived lag can occur together without one causing the other. Encoding load, source quality, YouTube ingest settings, outbound network conditions, and playback can also be involved. Separate the paths by comparing what FFmpeg produces locally with what YouTube receives.
- Local output is already delayed, choppy, or otherwise poor: investigate the source, timestamp handling, routing, and CPU load before focusing on YouTube.
- Local output looks right but YouTube does not: check Live Control Room stream health, ingest errors, and outbound connection stability.
- YouTube reports healthy ingest but viewers still report delay: do not assume a timestamp fault; the available evidence does not establish that timestamp flags alone cure playback delay.
YouTube’s live streaming error messages page explains the timestamped messages and stream-health status shown in Live Control Room. Treat them as evidence about ingest, not automatic proof that every playback delay originates there.
Collect the details needed for a diagnosis
Before editing the command, preserve the exact command and capture the complete relevant FFmpeg log section. Record the FFmpeg version and build, input format and codecs, and whether the command copies streams with -c copy or re-encodes them. Note the precise YouTube health message, if any. Without those details, a single command-line fix is not justified.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare the input and output stream and packet timestamps. Establish which timestamps are irregular and whether the warning concerns presentation timestamps (PTS) or decode timestamps (DTS). The distinction matters: video with B-frames can have presentation order that differs from decode order, so reordered presentation timestamps alone do not prove decode timestamps are invalid.
Understand the timestamp options before changing them
FFmpeg’s documentation describes how its timestamp options work, but their effect depends on the command, stream, and muxer. Check the installed build’s documentation and confirm that an option applies to the relevant input or output position.

| Option | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
-copyts |
Retains input timestamp values instead of FFmpeg’s usual sanitizing; it also preserves the initial start-time offset. | It is not a general repair switch. Frame synchronization and muxer processing can still make output timestamps differ from input timestamps. |
-start_at_zero |
When paired with -copyts, shifts input timestamps so they start at zero. |
It should not be presented as a stand-alone fix or as a remedy for arbitrary irregular timestamp sequences. |
-copytb |
Sets the time base used for stream copying. FFmpeg documents that the demuxer time base may be needed in some variable-frame-rate stream-copy cases to avoid non-monotonically increasing timestamps. | That case-specific possibility does not make it the right setting for every input or stream-copy command. |
avoid_negative_ts |
An output muxer option that shifts timestamps according to its configured or default behavior. | Shifting leading timestamps does not repair arbitrary non-monotonic sequences. Check the relevant muxer documentation. |
-fflags +igndts |
Alters handling of input decode timestamps. | Ignoring DTS without understanding the source can result in faulty reconstructed decode timestamps, particularly where B-frames reorder presentation. |
Fix non-monotonic DTS warnings carefully
If the log reports non-monotonic DTS, investigate whether decode timestamps are being discarded, reconstructed, or changed by an option or muxer. Check whether the video uses B-frames and whether the command includes -fflags +igndts. Do not suppress or ignore DTS just to silence a warning: the resulting decode timing can be wrong.
A December 2024 FFmpeg-user mailing-list case describes incorrect reconstructed DTS in a particular setup involving ignored DTS and B-frames, and suggests removing -fflags +igndts for that case. It is an example, not a universal diagnosis; inspect your own command and timestamps before applying that change.

Check YouTube ingest settings and stream health
Timestamp troubleshooting does not replace encoder configuration checks. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers supported ingest protocols and codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, audio, bitrate, and other settings. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and CBR encoding. Codec and bitrate details vary by ingest mode and resolution, so use the current table on YouTube’s page rather than assuming one setting fits every stream.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream-health status and any timestamped error messages.
- Confirm that your encoder’s protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, and bitrate match the current YouTube guidance for your ingest mode and resolution.
- Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health rather than relying only on the fact that the encoder says it is connected.
Separate local encoder problems from network problems
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, inspecting the local archive, and testing outbound network strength. These checks help locate where the symptom begins.

- Encoder preview or local archive is poor: investigate the input, source routing, timestamp warnings, encoder errors, and CPU load.
- Local output is clean but ingest is unhealthy: review the YouTube health message and encoder settings, then check outbound bandwidth and network stability.
- Local output and ingest both appear healthy: timestamp changes are not established as the answer to viewer playback delay; avoid making unrelated changes without evidence.
YouTube also recommends using a current encoder version. Its troubleshooting page notes that trying a different encoder can be an option if no problems are visible in the current one; that is a diagnostic alternative, not proof that the encoder is at fault.

- Save the original command, logs, and a known-good local output if available.
- Choose one change that addresses evidence you have found—for example, correcting a timestamp-handling flag, adjusting a YouTube-recommended encoder setting, or resolving a CPU or network issue.
- Run a short test with representative video and audio. Compare the same points in the local output, FFmpeg log, and YouTube stream-health messages.
- Keep the change only if the relevant symptom improves without introducing new timing or ingest errors. Record the resulting command and log for comparison.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream rather than debugging a live FFmpeg pipeline, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
