First find out which connection failed: FFmpeg’s documented reconnect* options apply to HTTP(S) inputs, not universally to a YouTube publishing connection. YouTube publishing uses RTMP or RTMPS. If the output connection fails, verify the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key, check FFmpeg and the host’s outbound connection, then test how your setup recovers when the network or encoder fails.

Identify which connection is failing

FFmpeg may be receiving a podcast file or feed from one connection and publishing the resulting stream over another. A reconnect message alone does not tell you which one failed. HTTP retry options placed before an input do not automatically reconnect an RTMP(S) output.

  1. Record the FFmpeg version and build, the command you ran, and the first error line before any retry messages.
  2. Identify whether the error is next to the input URL or the YouTube publishing URL. Note the relevant protocol: HTTP, HTTPS, RTMP, or RTMPS.
  3. Redact the stream key from logs, command history, screenshots, and any diagnostic report you share. Treat it like a password.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP-specific reconnect behavior; YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Fix retries for an HTTP(S) input

If FFmpeg is reading a live or endless HTTP(S) source, select the option that matches the failure. These are HTTP protocol options, not general-purpose switches for a YouTube RTMP(S) output.

Symptom HTTP option What it does
Connection drops before the input reaches EOF reconnect Retries a disconnection before EOF.
The live or endless source returns EOF reconnect_at_eof Treats EOF as an error and reconnects. FFmpeg describes this as useful for “live / endless streams.”
The input is streamed or non-seekable reconnect_streamed Allows reconnection on errors for streamed inputs.
A TCP or TLS error prevents connection reconnect_on_network_error Handles network errors during connection.
The server returns an HTTP error status reconnect_on_http_error Accepts status values or classes such as 5xx.

Place each HTTP option immediately before the -i input it configures. For example, the placement pattern is ffmpeg [HTTP options] -i "https://example.invalid/live" ...; this is an illustration, not a working source URL or a complete YouTube publishing command. Check what your installed build supports with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Set sensible retry limits and delays for your use case rather than waiting indefinitely by accident.

HTTP options may not solve a source that has actually ended, a server that no longer serves the feed, or a process that has exited. Confirm the source remains available and inspect the first error rather than treating every failure as a retry problem.

Fix a failed YouTube publishing connection

Refresh the destination URL and key

Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room for the stream you are using. Do not assume an older saved destination is still the right one. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; its guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. If your encoder reports SSL errors, verify that you selected the RTMPS URL and consult YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance, which includes port 443 as a troubleshooting step. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting.

If the key is incorrect, or you think it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. A reset key will not fix the stream until the encoder is updated with the new value. Never paste the key into public logs or support posts.

Distinguish endpoint errors from timeouts

A connection timeout can point to an unavailable endpoint, a blocked or unstable outbound route, or a host that cannot reach YouTube. Check the publishing URL and scheme first, then test from the same computer or server that runs FFmpeg. A successful browser test or a fast download result does not establish that the encoder host has stable outbound upload capacity.

Check the encoder, upload capacity, and stream settings

A healthy connection cannot compensate for a stalled encoder, an ended input, or insufficient upload capacity. Check whether FFmpeg is still producing audio and video, whether CPU load is preventing timely encoding, and whether a local recording continues if you have configured one. Then check the actual host’s outbound connection and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

  • Upload headroom: YouTube Help guidance verified on October 3, 2026 recommends leaving 20% room above the stream bitrate in available upload bandwidth. Treat this as platform guidance, not a guarantee that a connection is stable.
  • Encoder settings: YouTube’s guidance verified October 3, 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube’s guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.

Choose resolution and video bitrate using YouTube’s current ingest table and a check of your available upload capacity; there is no one bitrate that guarantees a reliable stream on every connection. YouTube’s recommendations can change, so consult its live-stream troubleshooting and encoder guidance when configuring a current broadcast.

Test recovery before relying on a continuous stream

“Continuous” describes the intended broadcast, not a guarantee of uninterrupted output. A retry may be bounded, a source can disappear, YouTube can reject a URL or key, a network route can fail, and FFmpeg can exit. A retry option does not restart a dead process.

  1. Run a representative preflight test and monitor YouTube’s stream health, as YouTube recommends.
  2. Test what happens when the input ends and when the input connection drops. Confirm whether FFmpeg reconnects, stops cleanly, or remains stuck waiting.
  3. Test publishing recovery separately: YouTube’s failover guidance suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet connection and confirming that the player rolls to the backup.
  4. For a single FFmpeg process, test what happens when the encoder exits. If you need it to restart, arrange and test supervision or an external failover workflow; reconnect flags alone do not provide process supervision.
  5. Record the observed recovery time and any interruption. Do not assume that a successful startup test proves recovery from later failures.

See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance for stream health and failover checks. These tests help reveal failure modes; they do not establish zero downtime.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Likely layer to inspect Next check
HTTP input reaches EOF Input source For a live or endless HTTP input, check whether reconnect_at_eof is appropriate and confirm the source is still available.
HTTP input reports a TCP or TLS error HTTP input network connection Check the source route and, for the installed build, the HTTP network-error options shown by ffmpeg -h protocol=http.
HTTP input returns an error status HTTP server response Check the status and source availability; configure reconnect_on_http_error only for statuses that make sense for the source.
YouTube publishing connection is rejected Output URL or credential Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS if intended, and update the encoder if the key was reset.
“Connection timed out” while publishing Outbound network or destination Check the endpoint and test stable upload connectivity from the encoder host.
“SSL errors” with publishing RTMPS configuration or route Verify the RTMPS URL and use YouTube’s documented troubleshooting steps, including its port 443 check.
Stream breaks when FFmpeg stops Encoder process Set up and test a supervisor or backup workflow; protocol retries cannot restart an exited process by themselves.
