How to Fix Dropped Frames in an Always-On YouTube Gaming Stream

Learn how to tell network drops from OBS rendering or encoding lag, test the right fixes, and use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings appropriately.

First find out which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection between OBS and YouTube; Rendering Lag points to OBS struggling to compose the scene; and Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) points to encoding falling behind. They are different problems, so changing bitrate will not fix every kind of frame loss.

Run a representative test before changing settings: reproduce the busiest part of the game, with movement and audio, and watch OBS Statistics and YouTube’s stream health. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which adjustment affects the failing counter.

Identify the kind of frame loss first

In OBS, open View > Stats (the exact menu label may vary by version) and monitor the statistics during a representative test. Note which counter increases, rather than relying only on a viewer saying the stream looks choppy.

  • Dropped Frames (Network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the streaming server at the configured bitrate. OBS describes network drops as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with that bitrate. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting covers this branch.
  • Rendering Lag: OBS is having trouble rendering the scene, often because the GPU is overloaded or resources are competing with the game. The game can appear to run well while OBS’s scene composition falls behind. See the OBS performance guide.
  • Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag): OBS’s encoder is not keeping pace. Check encoder load and competing CPU/GPU work, then apply the performance remedies below.

Use an unlisted test stream or another appropriate test setup, and make the test resemble the real broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health and dashboard messages. An idle desktop test may not expose problems that appear during a busy game scene.

If OBS reports network dropped frames

Work through the connection path before lowering video quality aggressively or buying equipment. The OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends wired networking. Treat Ethernet as a useful test when you are on Wi-Fi, not a guaranteed cure for congestion or routing problems.

  1. Test over Ethernet if you currently use Wi-Fi. Use an existing cable if available and compare the network-dropped-frames counter during the same game scene. If drops continue on a wired connection, investigate bitrate, software, router, route, or ISP issues rather than assuming a new cable will solve them.
  2. Set a bitrate your stable upload can sustain. Run an upload speed test and consider variation in available bandwidth, especially if other people or devices share the connection. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal guarantee. Lower the OBS bitrate and compare the result during a representative stream.
  3. Try another available ingest server. If your platform and encoder expose server choices, test another server and observe whether network drops change.
  4. Review OBS network options carefully. Check Settings > Advanced > Network where those controls are available; labels and availability vary by version and operating system. Leave Bind to IP at its default unless you have a specific reason to change it. On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations/TCP pacing and an IPv4-only option as diagnostic tests. If IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the IPv4/IPv6 default.
  5. Check software that can interfere with the connection. VPNs, security products, bundled network “optimizer” utilities, and outdated network drivers may correlate with drops. If security software appears implicated, use a short, cautious diagnostic test; then add an OBS exception and re-enable protection. Do not leave protection disabled.
  6. Restart the modem or router, then escalate if needed. A restart is a basic connectivity check. If the route still drops, record when it happens, the selected ingest server, bitrate, and OBS statistics, then contact your ISP. Route congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it lowers video quality and does not remove the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback mitigation, not as proof the connection is fixed.

If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag

When Rendering Lag or Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) rises while network drops remain healthy, focus on the computer’s workload. Reducing bitrate alone is not the right first response to GPU rendering overload.

  • Free GPU resources: Close or reduce other GPU-heavy programs. On Windows, OBS recommends trying Run as administrator as a possible quick fix for GPU overload.
  • Reduce game load: Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, then lower graphics settings if needed. This can leave more GPU capacity for OBS to render the scene.
  • Simplify the OBS scene: Reduce demanding sources, filters, and browser sources. Test the same scene after each change.
  • Lower output demands only if necessary: Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate when the system still cannot keep up. OBS identifies a move from 60 fps to 30 fps as an option when 60 fps is not working. This can reduce smoothness or image detail; it is not a fix for network drops.

Keep the diagnosis tied to the counter. If rendering and encoding performance are healthy but the network-dropped-frames count rises, prioritize the connection and sustainable bitrate instead.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings as targets, not upload tests

YouTube’s encoder recommendations are ingestion settings; they do not establish how much upload bandwidth your particular connection can reliably deliver. For H.264, YouTube Help lists the following recommended bitrates on the page accessed October 3, 2026. That date is the access date, not a publication date stated on the page.

Output YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

For AV1 or H.265, the same YouTube Help page lists 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder, account, or connection can sustain the setting.

  • Several viewers on the same internet connection: The shared network may be responsible. Check playback on a separate connection before changing your encoder.
  • Viewers on different networks: An encoder-side problem becomes more plausible. Check OBS’s encoder output and CPU load, dashboard messages, and a local recording if you have one; test outbound connection strength and contact your ISP if the evidence points to the uplink.

Ask affected viewers what they see and where playback fails, then compare with another device and network. A viewer report is a useful clue, not a diagnosis by itself. See YouTube Help’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
