Start by choosing subtitles in the Disney+ player, then test another title. If the words appear but look wrong, adjust the PS4’s closed-caption styling; if captions are missing across titles, restart and update the app before reinstalling it. A missing language or a timing error on just one title may be a Disney+ track issue, not a PS4 fault.
Turn subtitles on in the Disney+ player
- Start the movie or episode on your PS4.
- Open the playback controls and select the audio/subtitle control. It may look like a keyboard, captions, or audio-and-subtitles icon; its location can vary with Disney+ app updates.
- Choose the subtitle or closed-caption language you want.
- Resume playback and check that the text appears.
Disney’s language and subtitle guidance says to select captions during playback and recommends checking another video if the problem continues. Not every title offers every language, and availability can vary by title and region.
If the captions look wrong: check PS4 styling
For oversized text, poor contrast, an unwanted background, or opacity that makes captions hard to read, check the console’s accessibility options:

- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions.
- Enable Display Closed Captions, then open Closed Captions Settings.
- Adjust the available text and background options.
- If an option says captions are displayed “as specified by content,” turn it off if you want the PS4’s custom styling to take priority.
Labels may differ slightly with system language or software revision. These options affect presentation; they are not a fix for an absent language track, incorrect translation, timing error, or app fault. See PlayStation’s PS4 closed-caption settings guide and its accessibility instructions. If the appearance controls have no effect, recheck the Disney+ player selection and restart the app.

Captions are enabled but missing
Use comparison tests before changing more console settings:
- Pause, resume, or briefly turn captions off and back on in the player.
- Exit the episode completely and reopen it.
- Try another episode in the same series, then a different movie or show.
- If possible, try the same title on another device.
- Only one title is affected: suspect a title-specific caption track or metadata issue. Avoid resetting the console for a single-title problem.
- Only one language is affected: that track may not be offered for the title or your region.
- Every title is affected: check PS4 accessibility settings, app state, updates, connection, and service status.
Disney recommends testing other videos to help distinguish a title issue from a broader device or app problem (Disney+ troubleshooting guidance).

The subtitle language is wrong or missing
Open the audio/subtitle menu during playback and select the language you need. If it is not listed, change the Disney+ app language and check the title again; this may affect which options are presented, but it cannot create a caption track Disney+ does not provide. Test another title as well. Disney says audio and subtitle availability can vary by title and country or region. See Disney’s instructions for changing app language.

There is no documented PS4-specific subtitle-sync command in the available guidance. Rewind and replay the affected scene, exit and reopen the episode, then fully close and relaunch Disney+. Restart the PS4 and check for app and system updates. Test another title:

- If the problem occurs only on one title, especially if it follows that title to another device, report the timing or missing-text problem to Disney+.
- If captions fail across several titles and playback also buffers or freezes, test the network and follow the app troubleshooting steps below.
A rewind or restart may help playback recover, but it is not a confirmed permanent repair for a defective caption track. Disney’s streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting, updating, testing the connection, and reinstalling when necessary.
Captions keep switching on or off
The selected caption track is a Disney+ playback choice; PS4 accessibility settings primarily affect caption display. Close the episode rather than leaving it paused, fully exit and relaunch Disney+, and choose the desired track again. Check the PS4 closed-caption settings if the problem is actually appearance-related. If the preference keeps being forgotten across titles, update or reinstall the app. These steps are a troubleshooting sequence, not a confirmed fix for a universal PS4 preference-saving bug.

Restart, update, or reinstall Disney+
- Close Disney+ and restart the PS4: open Power > Power Options > Restart PS4.
- Check for a Disney+ update: highlight the app on the home screen, press OPTIONS, and choose Check for Update if shown.
- Update PS4 system software at Settings > System Software Update, then follow the prompts. PlayStation’s system software instructions direct users to install the latest available update; no particular version number is needed here.
- To reinstall Disney+, highlight the app, press Triangle, and select Delete. Turn the PS4 fully off and back on, download Disney+ again from the PlayStation Store, and sign in. See Disney’s PlayStation reinstall steps.
Reinstallation refreshes the app installation; it does not guarantee that a missing or faulty title caption track will be fixed. Deleting the app does not cancel a Disney+ subscription, but you will need your login to sign in again.

- Check PlayStation Network status for a service issue.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. If other streaming apps also fail or buffer, restart the modem/router and test again.
- Restart the PS4, check the app and system updates, and reinstall Disney+ as described above.
- If the app still malfunctions, try restoring licenses from Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- As a late step for persistent app or console problems, start the PS4 in Safe Mode and select Rebuild Database.
PlayStation lists status checks, updates, connection testing, restarting, reinstalling, restoring licenses, and rebuilding the database in its streaming-app troubleshooting guidance. Rebuild Database is not a first-line subtitle fix. Do not initialize the PS4 or reinstall system software for an ordinary caption problem: system reinstallation erases console data and is reserved for broader, serious system failures.

When to contact Disney+
Contact Disney+ if one title has missing or incorrect captions, a required language is absent despite being expected, captions repeatedly fall out of sync, or the issue persists after comparison testing on another device. Include the PS4 model (standard, Slim, or Pro), system software version, Disney+ app version if shown, title and episode, caption language, whether other titles are affected, and whether another device displays captions correctly.
