If Crunchyroll videos won’t start, first check Crunchyroll’s status page, then try another title, device, or network. These quick comparisons help distinguish a service issue from a problem with your browser, app, device, or connection—before you clear data or reinstall anything.
Start with three quick checks
- Check service status. Visit Crunchyroll Status. If it reports a playback incident, wait for service to recover before making disruptive changes. The status history can show whether playback incidents have occurred, but it does not confirm a current problem.
- Try another title. If other episodes play, the fault may be specific to one title, episode, or its regional availability.
- Compare a device or network. Try the same account on another supported device, or switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data. If it works on cellular but not Wi-Fi, investigate the router or network rather than reinstalling the app.
If the service status is normal, use the steps below in order. Close and reopen the player or app, restart your device, update software, and only then clear data or reinstall.
What kind of playback failure are you seeing?

| Only Wi-Fi fails | Check router, DNS, ISP, filtering, or managed-network restrictions. |

- Stop playback, reload the page, or fully close and reopen the app. Switching away from an app may leave it running in the background.
- Restart the phone, computer, TV, console, or streaming device.
- Try a different episode or title, then test the affected one again.
- Sign out of Crunchyroll on the affected device and sign back in. Confirm you are using the intended account. If only premium content fails, check the account’s access without assuming billing is the cause.
- Switch networks—for example, Wi-Fi to mobile data—if available.
- If playback begins but keeps buffering, lower video quality if the player offers that option.
These steps are low-risk. Save clearing data and reinstalling for failures that remain isolated to one app or browser. Crunchyroll’s loading guide and general playback guide recommend testing another device or browser, changing networks, updating software, and signing out and back in.

If Crunchyroll won’t play in a browser
- Try a private or incognito window. If playback works there, an extension or stored site data is a likely suspect. Private mode can also handle protected content differently, so it is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent fix.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Start with ad blockers, script blockers, privacy or fingerprinting tools, pop-up blockers, user-script managers, and VPN or proxy extensions. Test playback, then re-enable extensions one at a time. Avoid leaving security tools disabled; only make a site exception if you trust the service.
- Hard-refresh the page. Crunchyroll lists Ctrl + F5 for Windows/Linux and Shift + Command + R for Mac.
- Clear Crunchyroll site data, cookies, and cache. This can remove stale or corrupted player resources, but may sign you out. Restart the browser afterward.
- Update the browser or test another supported browser. Crunchyroll lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari among supported browser families. Its browser guidance has listed Chrome 117+, Firefox 117+, Edge 117+, and Safari 16.1+; these are the versions shown in that guidance and may change. Check the current browser troubleshooting page for the latest requirements.
A browser can load the Crunchyroll website while the video player still fails. If a second browser works, the issue is more likely specific to the original browser’s data, extensions, version, or DRM configuration. Crunchyroll also recommends updating browsers, clearing cache, trying another browser, and disabling extensions in its browser video-quality guidance.
Fix a black screen or DRM error
Digital rights management (DRM) controls protected video playback. A black screen, or a MED- or SHAK-series error, can point to a protected-content setting or interference with the browser’s playback components—not just a slow connection.

- Update the browser, then restart it.
- In browser settings, look for protected content, DRM, or Widevine, and ensure protected playback is allowed. The exact control and menu path vary by browser and operating system.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, VPNs, proxies, and other extensions, then try a mainstream supported browser.
- If the same code appears in multiple browsers or devices, note the exact code and contact Crunchyroll Support.
See Crunchyroll’s DRM error guidance for MED and SHAK error families and protected-content troubleshooting. Menu labels differ, so do not assume one set of browser instructions applies everywhere.
Fix the mobile app
- Force-stop or fully close Crunchyroll, then reopen it.
- Restart your phone or tablet.
- Update the Crunchyroll app and the device’s operating system.
- Close downloads and background apps that may be using a lot of bandwidth or device resources, then test another network.
- On Android: try clearing the app cache. A common path is
Settings > Apps > Crunchyroll > Storage > Clear cache, though names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. Clear cache first; clearing app data may sign you out and remove local settings or downloads. - On iPhone or iPad: there is no universal Crunchyroll clear-cache control. Update and restart first. If playback remains broken, delete or offload the app and reinstall it from the official App Store. This may remove local data or offline downloads.
Reinstalling resets the app; it is not a guaranteed cure. Crunchyroll provides broader steps in its playback troubleshooting guide.

Fix Crunchyroll on a TV, streaming device, or console
- Exit the Crunchyroll app, then reopen it.
- Restart the TV, console, or streaming stick. If a normal restart does not help, unplug it for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try again.
- Install available system or firmware updates, then update the Crunchyroll app.
- Test another title and, if possible, another supported device on the same network.
- If only this device still fails, reinstall the app. Check whether that platform and device edition are supported in your country.
TVs and consoles usually do not expose browser-style cache or DRM controls, so a device restart, system update, and app update are more relevant than browser fixes. Crunchyroll lists device families including Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, Google TV, LG and Samsung TVs, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Roku, Xbox, and others; availability can vary by country and hardware edition. If playback buffers or freezes after starting
Buffering is more often a connection-stability, congestion, or device-load problem than a DRM setting. Test another site or streaming service, then compare Crunchyroll on Wi-Fi and cellular data.

- Move closer to the router or use Ethernet where possible.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video calls, and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Restart the modem/router, wait for the connection to return, then restart the playback device.
- Lower video quality if available. This can help on an unstable connection, but will not fix a black screen, DRM error, or service outage.
- If multiple devices fail only on one network, check router filtering, parental controls, firewall rules, or ISP issues. Work, school, hotel, library, and public Wi-Fi may restrict streaming traffic.
Crunchyroll recommends switching networks, restarting the router, reducing competing network use, and using Ethernet where possible in its browser quality guidance.

VPNs, proxies, regional availability, and DNS
Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy while troubleshooting. Crunchyroll says VPN use is unsupported in its video-quality guidance; VPNs or proxies can also introduce latency, change the apparent region, or interfere with playback checks. This is not a recommendation to buy a VPN.

A title that is unavailable in your country is different from a player that fails to load. Traveling or using a different IP address can change which titles appear or play. If only one series or episode is unavailable, test another title and check the account’s region context before changing device settings.
DNS changes are an advanced diagnostic step, not a routine fix. Crunchyroll mentions DNS in its browser troubleshooting guidance, with setup resources for OpenDNS and Google Public DNS. DNS may help if name resolution is involved, but it will not fix an outage, DRM setting, corrupted app, or account session. Before changing DNS, record the original settings; a change may affect the whole device or network, and managed networks may prohibit or override it. Restore the previous settings if it does not help.
When only one show or episode fails
If other Crunchyroll titles play normally, avoid resetting the whole device straight away. Try another episode of the same series, then try the affected episode on a second device or network. If the failure follows only that episode, a title-specific content or server issue is possible. If the title is missing or marked unavailable, regional rights may be the reason rather than a loading fault. Record the title, episode, region, and exact error for support.
When to contact Crunchyroll Support
Contact support if the problem persists across multiple supported devices and networks, a specific error code repeats after standard troubleshooting, an account cannot play videos anywhere, or one title continues to fail while the rest of the service works. Include:
- The exact error message or code and a screenshot, if available.
- Device model and operating system; Crunchyroll app version or browser name and version.
- Your country or region, affected title and episode, and whether all titles fail or only one.
- Whether another device or network works.
- The steps you have already tried, such as updating, restarting, clearing cache, or testing another network.
Use the official Crunchyroll Help Center and its loading and playback troubleshooting guidance. A precise device, title, error, and comparison test gives support a more useful starting point than “videos won’t load.”
