Crunchyroll does not publish a definitive explanation for the exact code MED-4003. Its help center groups “MED” errors with browser DRM playback errors, so protected-content settings are a sensible first check—especially if the error appears in a browser. But the code is not proof of one specific cause: extensions, a stale session, the app or device, your network, or a temporary Crunchyroll problem may also be involved.
Start with the quick tests below, then follow the steps for your device. They are ordered from least disruptive to more involved.
Try these quick checks first
- Reload the episode, or force-close and reopen the Crunchyroll app.
- Try another episode. If only one fails, note its title and episode number.
- If you use a browser, test in a private or incognito window. If playback works there, the cause may be an extension, cookie, permission, or cached site data in your regular profile.
- Temporarily turn off ad blockers and other browser extensions, then retry. Disable a VPN or proxy for the test as well; Crunchyroll lists these as possible sources of DRM playback interference.
- Update the browser or app, then test another browser, device, or network.
- Check the Crunchyroll service status page before making more disruptive changes.
These tests help narrow the cause as well as potentially fixing it. A private-window test is useful, but it is not conclusive: private browsing may handle sessions or DRM differently from a normal window.
Why MED-4003 may appear
Crunchyroll’s DRM troubleshooting guidance includes MED errors and recommends checking browser updates, protected-content playback, extensions, VPNs, and proxies. The help page does not define MED-4003 as a distinct technical subtype or say that it always has one cause. Treat the code as a playback failure to diagnose, not as a guaranteed diagnosis in itself.

If the problem affects only one browser, browser configuration or stored site data is a stronger possibility. If it affects only one device, look first at that device or its app. If several devices and networks fail, a service, account, regional, or content-specific issue becomes more plausible. Those patterns are clues, not guarantees.
Fix MED-4003 in a desktop browser
1. Update the browser and check supported-content settings
Crunchyroll’s browser troubleshooting page lists Chrome 117 or newer, Firefox 117 or newer, Edge 117 or newer, and Safari 16.1 or newer. Browser requirements can change, so consult its current browser playback guidance rather than treating those numbers as permanent. Install available browser and operating-system updates, then restart the browser.
- Chrome: Open Settings and search for protected content. Make sure sites are allowed to play protected content. Setting names and placement can vary by version.
- Firefox: In Settings, check that DRM-controlled content is allowed. If the Widevine Content Decryption Module is shown in Firefox’s add-ons or plugins settings, make sure it has not been disabled. Do not assume every installation needs manual module changes.
- Edge: Crunchyroll documents the flag
edge://flags/#edge-widevine-drmfor checking Widevine DRM. Browser flags are experimental; change this only if needed, and avoid altering unrelated flags. - Safari: Update Safari through macOS updates and test without content blockers. If the issue persists, check Safari’s site playback and protected-content permissions; the exact controls can vary by macOS version.
After changing a setting, restart the browser and retry the episode. If the DRM or protected-content option is already enabled, leave it alone and continue with the extension and site-data tests.

2. Isolate extensions, VPNs, and proxies
Disable the ad blocker first, refresh Crunchyroll, and test playback. If that does not help, temporarily disable other extensions one at a time. Also pause VPN or proxy routing for a test. Re-enable extensions and protection after testing, and restore them individually to identify any conflict. You do not need to uninstall security software as a first step.
3. Clear Crunchyroll’s site data
If playback works in a private window but not your usual browser profile—or if the problem began after an update—clear Crunchyroll-specific cookies and cached site data if your browser offers that option. Then restart the browser and sign in again. Clearing cookies can sign you out; clearing all browser data can also affect other sites, so prefer removing data for Crunchyroll alone. Crunchyroll’s loading troubleshooting guide also recommends clearing cache and cookies and signing in again.
4. Compare another browser
Try the same episode in another supported, up-to-date browser. If it works there, focus on the original browser’s DRM setting, extensions, or site data. If it fails in multiple browsers, test another device and network before concluding the service is down.

Fix MED-4003 in the Crunchyroll app
Browser DRM settings do not apply to most app playback problems. On a phone, tablet, TV, console, or streaming device, work through these steps:

- Force-close Crunchyroll and reopen it.
- Restart the device.
- Install available Crunchyroll app and operating-system updates.
- Sign out of Crunchyroll and back in.
- Try another episode and, if possible, another network.
- On Android, try
Settings → Apps → Crunchyroll → Storage → Clear cache. Menu wording varies by device. Clearing app data is more disruptive and may sign you out or remove local settings; try cache first. - If the error remains, reinstall Crunchyroll from the device’s official app store. Reinstallation signs you out, and downloaded episodes may need to be downloaded again.
These steps address local app or device issues; they will not fix a Crunchyroll outage or account-side problem. More general device-specific advice is available in Crunchyroll’s video playback troubleshooting guide.
Check the network before changing DNS
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or try another wired or Wi-Fi network. If playback works on a different connection, restart your router and check whether a filtering service, parental control, workplace or school network, or other network restriction is affecting playback. Crunchyroll also recommends router restarts as part of general playback troubleshooting.

Changing DNS is a later diagnostic option, not a direct DRM repair or guaranteed MED-4003 fix. Crunchyroll’s browser guidance discusses DNS options, but a DNS change may not help if the browser’s protected-content setting is disabled or the fault is on Crunchyroll’s side. It can also affect filtering, privacy, and other devices on the network. Try another network first, and do not change DNS on a managed connection unless you are authorized to do so.
If you briefly test antivirus or security filtering, do so cautiously: do not browse broadly or download files while protection is off, and turn it back on immediately. Prefer a specific allow-list rule over leaving protection disabled.

Open the official status page while the error is occurring and review the live indicators for areas such as Playback, Apps, Content, and Account Access. Its history view is useful context, but a past incident does not show the current service state.

- Several devices and networks fail: a service, account, regional, or content issue is more plausible than a single browser setting.
- Only one browser fails: investigate DRM permissions, extensions, VPN/proxy routing, and site data.
- Only one device fails: prioritize that device’s app, software, and local storage.
- Only one title or episode fails: test other content and report the exact title and episode; avoid resetting every device before checking whether the failure is content-specific.
These comparisons help localize the problem, but none by itself proves where the fault lies.
When to contact Crunchyroll Support
Contact support if MED-4003 continues after the relevant browser or app checks, or if it fails across devices and networks. Include enough detail for support to reproduce the problem:
- The exact code, MED-4003, and the full on-screen message.
- The show, season, and episode, and whether other titles play.
- Your device model or type, operating-system version, and country or region.
- For browser playback: browser name and version. For app playback: app version.
- Whether another device, browser, or network works.
- The steps you have already tried and their results.
- A screenshot or short screen recording if it is appropriate and does not expose private information.
Crunchyroll specifically asks DRM-error reports to include the affected content, browser and version, and exact error. Its broader playback guidance also requests device, region, and troubleshooting details. Avoid sending passwords or payment details in a screenshot.
