Do not begin with random custom filters: an aggressive rule can block the player, subtitles, or DRM resources. Identify what “not working” means
These symptoms point to different causes:
- Ads appear but the episode plays: the blocker may be outdated, the browser may limit its capabilities, or Crunchyroll’s delivery method may have changed.
- Black or blank player, endless loading, missing subtitles, or playback only after disabling the blocker: a filter, script rule, or another extension may be blocking player or DRM requests.
- A “disable ad blocker” notice: Crunchyroll has detected blocking, but the notice itself does not prove that one particular filter is responsible.
- DRM codes such as
MEDorSHAK-6*-GENERIC: check protected-content permissions, browser updates, extensions, VPNs, and proxies. - Only one title or region fails: the problem may be title availability, an episode-specific fault, or regional restrictions rather than ad blocking.
- The mobile, TV, or console app shows ads: desktop browser extensions generally do not apply to those apps.

The five-minute troubleshooting sequence
- Open the blocker’s toolbar panel on Crunchyroll. Confirm it is enabled for the current site, has permission to run there, and has not placed
crunchyroll.comon a trusted or allowlisted-sites list. Reload after changing the setting. - Temporarily disable every other ad blocker, script blocker, privacy extension, VPN, and browser-level blocker. Run one content blocker at a time; uBlock Origin’s project warns that other blockers can interfere with its operation.
- Update the extension itself and its filter lists.
- Hard-refresh the episode. If that does not help, open a private/incognito window, sign in, and test the same episode. A private window is diagnostic only: many browsers disable extensions there unless you explicitly allow them.
- Clear site data for Crunchyroll, close and reopen the browser, sign in again, and test before reinstalling anything. Crunchyroll recommends clearing cache and cookies for loading problems.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy and compare your normal Wi-Fi with a mobile-data connection. A different DNS server can sometimes improve general loading, but DNS filtering is not a dependable way to remove streaming ads.
- Test another fully updated supported browser. If the episode works with blocking disabled but fails with it enabled, leave Crunchyroll allowlisted or change the browser/blocker combination rather than adding increasingly aggressive rules.
Update uBlock Origin without breaking playback
- Open the uBlock Origin dashboard from its toolbar icon.
- Choose Filter lists.
- Click Purge all caches, then Update now.
- Return to Crunchyroll and hard-refresh the page.
Filter-list data is separate from the extension, so updating uBlock does not necessarily refresh every downloaded list. uBlock includes lists such as EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Peter Lowe’s Blocklist, malware lists, and its own lists. Adding many third-party lists or copying unverified “Crunchyroll fixes” can create conflicts and block player scripts, media, subtitles, or DRM resources. To isolate a rule, disable blocking for Crunchyroll, reload, and try the episode. If playback immediately returns, re-enable blocking and disable other extensions one at a time. If the blocker remains the cause, allowlist the site instead of weakening the player with custom rules.

Browser-specific fixes
Firefox: the strongest uBlock fallback
The uBlock Origin project says its extension works best on Firefox and that Firefox offers capabilities not available, or less reliable, in Chromium browsers. Install it only from the official Firefox Add-ons listing or links provided by the uBlock Origin project. Confirm site access on Crunchyroll, update filter lists, and reload. If playback fails, use the site control in uBlock to disable blocking for Crunchyroll and reload again. For DRM errors, check Firefox’s protected-content setting and test with other extensions disabled.
Chrome and Edge: check platform limits
Chrome’s move away from Manifest V2 is constraining the full uBlock Origin extension. The project identifies Chrome 139 as the end of support for the full extension and lists August 31, 2026 as a Chrome Web Store removal date; rollout and availability can vary, so check the current browser and extension status. An extension warning, missing features, or newly ineffective filtering is not necessarily a filter-list problem.

- Update Chrome or Edge and inspect the extensions page for a support warning.
- Use one blocker from the official browser store and test it alone.
- If required capabilities have been removed, use Firefox or a blocker compatible with the browser’s current platform. Avoid unofficial “patched” extensions and manual workarounds.
Chrome’s built-in control is narrower than a full content blocker: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Intrusive ads. It is not guaranteed to remove Crunchyroll video ads. Site-specific permissions are available from the site-information icon beside the address bar; Google documents these controls at Chrome Help.
Brave, Safari, and Opera
These browsers use different built-in blockers, extension systems, and permission labels. Use the current official browser store, confirm that the blocker is allowed on Crunchyroll, and do not assume Chrome or Firefox instructions produce identical results. Brave’s built-in blocking may reduce advertising but is not a promise of permanent in-stream blocking. Safari requires a compatible, up-to-date content blocker.

When Crunchyroll will not load or shows a DRM error
- Update the browser and check Crunchyroll’s latest supported-devices page. Crunchyroll support pages currently show different minimum browser versions (one lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge 117+ with Safari 16.1+, while the newer page lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge 123+ with Safari 17.1+), so use the newest page rather than treating an old number as permanent.
- Enable protected content or DRM playback in the browser.
- Disable extensions one at a time, beginning with blockers and script/privacy tools.
- Turn off VPN and proxy connections. Crunchyroll says VPN use to access unavailable regional content is unsupported and can cause playback or login problems; see its regional-availability guidance.
- Clear Crunchyroll site data, restart the browser, and test another browser or device.
- If the failure persists, record the exact code, browser and version, title, episode, device, network, and a screenshot before contacting Crunchyroll support.
What each option can and cannot solve

When to stop changing filters
Stop troubleshooting the blocker when the episode plays normally with blocking disabled, when the same failure occurs in every browser and device, or when the issue is clearly regional or title-specific. More filters are not automatically better, and switching VPN locations is not a reliable ad-blocking method. For phones, tablets, TVs, and consoles, update or reinstall the official Crunchyroll app; browser-extension instructions do not transfer to those apps.

Crunchyroll Premium is the service’s official ad-free option. The U.S. Premium page currently displays Fan at $9.99 per month and a Mega Fan seven-day trial that renews at $13.99 per month, but prices, taxes, trials, plan names, and benefits vary by region and can change. Check the live Crunchyroll Premium page for your country before subscribing. Premium is unnecessary if a simple blocker update fixes your setup, but it is the most predictable choice when you do not want to maintain browser extensions.

The Bottom Line
Update and simplify the blocker first. If Chrome or Edge has become the weak link, test Firefox with the official uBlock Origin extension. If blocking breaks playback, allowlist Crunchyroll; if you need guaranteed supported ad-free viewing, use Premium.
