Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Max says it can’t connect, first test another app and another device, then restart your network and device. If Max works elsewhere, update, repair, or reinstall the affected app. If you receive Max through a TV, mobile, or internet provider, reconnect that provider account instead of creating a second Max account.
Identify what “can’t connect” means
The wording is not a diagnosis. Before changing settings, note the exact message, any numeric code, and where the failure occurs: opening Max, signing in, activating a TV, or starting playback. Check whether one device or every device is affected, and whether other websites and streaming apps work.
Max recommends recording the on-screen message or code before contacting support (Max error-code guidance).
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely area | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Max and other apps fail | Home network or internet provider | Restart the modem and router, then test speed |
| Other apps work, but Max fails on every device | Max service, account, or provider connection | Record the code, retry later, and check account eligibility |
| Max works on a phone but not a TV | TV app, firmware, or TV network path | Update, restart, clear data, or reinstall on the TV |
| Max works in another browser | Cookies, extensions, ad blocker, or browser version | Disable extensions and clear Max data in the failing browser |
| App opens but playback fails | Connection, software, browser configuration, or device | Update and test another device or browser |
| Provider activation fails | Subscription eligibility or provider linking | Confirm Max is included and reconnect the provider account |
| Sign-in fails everywhere | Credentials or account | Use password recovery or account support |
| Only one title fails | Title-specific playback issue | Try another title before changing device settings |
8 fixes, in the least disruptive order
1. Test Max on another device
Open another website or streaming app on the affected device. Then try Max on a second supported device using the same Wi‑Fi.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- If Max works on the second device, concentrate on the original app, browser, device software, or installation.
- If Max fails everywhere but other services work, investigate the account, provider connection, or a possible Max-side problem.
- If other services also fail, fix the internet connection first.
This comparison is the fastest way to separate a device problem from a network-wide one (Max connection troubleshooting).
2. Check speed and reconnect the network
Run a speed test on the same network as the TV or streaming player—not on a phone using cellular data. Max lists 5 Mbps download speed as the minimum for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for the best 4K experience. Speed does not guarantee success: unstable Wi‑Fi, congestion, packet loss, or a failing router can still interrupt Max.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and game or system updates.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and wait about one minute for internet service to return.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi‑Fi.
- Reopen Max. Use Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi for a TV or player if possible.
See Max’s speed and network guidance at help.max.com.
3. Fully restart Max and the device
- Sign out of Max if it opens.
- Close the app completely.
- Turn the device off rather than leaving it in sleep mode.
- Wait about 10 seconds, then turn it on.
- Open Max and sign in again.
For network failures, also complete the modem-and-router restart in Fix 2. Restart controls differ among Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, LG, Samsung, phones, and other platforms.

4. Update the app, device, or browser
Check all three layers: the Max app, the device operating system or TV firmware, and the browser used at max.com. Examples from Max’s current instructions include:
- Android: Play Store → search for Max → Update.
- iPhone or iPad: App Store → search for Max → Update.
- Android software: Settings → System → Software Update.
- iPhone or iPad software: Settings → General → Software Update.
- Microsoft Edge: Menu → Settings → About Microsoft Edge.
- Fire TV: Highlight Max → Menu → More Info → Update.
- Apple TV: Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software.
Menu labels vary by model and software version. For browser streaming, Max recommends the latest Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, or Safari (Max app and device troubleshooting).
5. Sign out and sign in again
Use this when Max opens but will not connect to your account or keeps returning to the sign-in screen.
- Open Max and select your profile.
- Choose Sign Out (on many TVs it is under the Settings gear).
- Close and reopen Max.
- Sign in with the account that holds your subscription.
If the problem is provider activation rather than ordinary sign-in, repeat the provider-connection flow after signing out (Max sign-in and activation help).

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
6. Repair browser settings
For Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari:
- Try another supported browser.
- Use a normal, non-private window for regular streaming. A private window can be a useful diagnostic test, but its cookie restrictions can also cause playback failures.
- Enable third-party cookies.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons.
- Clear Max-related cache and cookies.
- Close and reopen the browser, then try max.com again.
A VPN, DNS filter, parental-control system, or work, school, hotel, or public network can also change authentication or video delivery. Temporarily test without those filters; this is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Max’s browser guidance is at help.max.com.
7. Clear the Max app cache or data
Clearing cache is relatively low risk. Clearing storage or data normally signs you out, removes local settings, and may require TV reactivation; on platforms with downloads, it can remove downloaded content. Try it after restarting and updating.
Android phone or tablet
- Settings → search for Max → Max.
- Choose Storage & cache (or Storage).
- Select Clear cache.
- If needed, select Clear storage or Clear data, then sign in again.
Amazon Fire TV
- Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Max.
- Choose Force Stop, then Clear Cache.
- If necessary, choose Clear Data and reopen Max.
Android TV
- Settings → Apps → Max.
- Choose Clear cache, then Clear data if required.
- Reopen Max and sign in.
Android versions and manufacturers use different labels. Max’s device-specific paths are listed at help.max.com.
8. Reinstall Max or switch devices
- Uninstall Max.
- Restart the device.
- Install Max again from the official app store.
- Sign in and test playback.
- If it still fails, use another supported device to confirm whether the original hardware is the cause.
Reinstallation cannot correct an outage, an ineligible provider package, incorrect credentials, or insufficient bandwidth. For browser users, switching browsers and clearing site data is usually more proportionate than reinstalling the browser.

Provider activation and subscription errors
Provider-billed Max access is a separate connection problem from ordinary sign-in. A general TV or internet package does not necessarily include Max.
“Can’t verify your subscription”
Confirm with the TV, mobile, or internet provider that Max is specifically included and active. If it is not included, reinstalling the app will not create entitlement (Max provider-subscription guidance).
Your provider is missing
Search the provider by name rather than relying only on the logos displayed in the app. Provider availability and labels vary by market.
You already have a Max account
Use the existing Max email and password when the connection flow offers that choice. Do not repeatedly create new accounts; doing so can split access or create duplicate subscriptions.

Provider login fails
Max says its support team cannot access provider sign-in credentials. The provider must resolve a wrong password, account lock, eligibility issue, or missing package. Max’s provider connection information is at help.max.com.
Phone activation fails
Try completing activation on a computer or another supported browser. For a TV QR code or activation code, sign in to the Max mobile app first when requested, keep the devices on the same Wi‑Fi where that method requires it, or use max.com/signin on a computer. Follow the TV activation guidance at help.max.com.
When to contact Max
Escalate after the eight fixes when Max fails on multiple supported devices and networks, a valid subscription cannot be verified, password recovery fails, a persistent error code remains, or access appears duplicated or missing. Provide:
- Exact error wording and numeric code
- Device model and operating-system version
- Max app or browser version
- Measured download speed
- Whether other apps work
- Whether Max works on another device
- Whether billing is direct or through a provider
That information lets support distinguish a device fault from an account, provider, network, or service-side issue.

Supported devices and changing labels
Max supports phones, tablets, computers, TVs, streaming players, set-top boxes, and game consoles, but compatibility is platform- and model-specific. Check the current device list before assuming a smart TV is supported (Max supported devices). Branding and menu text can differ across devices and help pages, including older references to “HBO Max”; use the current Max app and the labels shown on your device.
